The horseshoe is considered very lucky and used to be hung in many homes to protect and attract good fortune for the family residing inside.

Horseshoes
Horseshoes were also considered lucky because they were made by blacksmiths, which is also considered a very lucky trade. Because they worked with elemental fire and magical iron, they were thought to have special powers. It was believed that a blacksmith could heal the sick and if a couple was married by a blacksmith, their marriage would be a happy one. Their work with horses also brought them much power and prestige, not just because they made the lucky horseshoe but also because they were the keepers of the Horseman's Word (the basis for the movie, The Horse Whisperer Horseshoes were originally made from iron, which may also account for the superstitions that are associated with this object. Iron was considered magical because it was able to withstand fire and was much stronger than other metals. The superstitions for iron are thought to originate in prehistoric times. It was used as a charm to ward off evil spirits. Another aspect of the horseshoe that added to it's good luck was the fact that it was commonly held in place by seven iron nails. Since ancient times, the number seven was considered very important. Life was divided into seven ages; a rainbow has seven colors; astrology once held that seven planets made up the universe; there are seven deadly sins; a seventh child was thought to have special powers; there are seven days in a week; the moon changes from one phase to another every seven days; and a long-held belief states that the body goes through a radical change every seven years.

Pitching Horseshoes Some of your buddies might come around
for a couple of beers and a game,
but most evenings, you pitched horseshoes alone. I washed up the dishes
or watered the garden to the thudding
sound of the horseshoe in the pit, or the practiced ring of metal
against metal, after the silent
summer you played a seamless, unscored game against yourself, or night falling, or coming in the house. You were good at it. From the porch I watched you become shadowless, then featureless, until I knew you couldn't see either, and still the dusk rang out, your aim that easy; between the iron stakes you had driven into the hard earth yourself, you paced back and forth as if there were a decision to make, and you were the one to make it.

In spite of the older view that iron horseshoes originated in the Yenisei region of Siberia in the 9th or 10th century AD, [White 1962 p 58] there is archaeological evidence that iron horseshoes were known to the Celts, possibly as early as 50 BC. Ann Hyland writes: Shoeing was only in its infancy during the Roman era, and it is through the Celts that farriery made its major development. There is archaeological evidence of pre-Roman Celtic shoes, but the practice was not widespread until after AD 400 [D. Butler, The Principles of Horseshoeing , Texas 1974, pp. 16-17.] Shoes and nails have been found in Gaul on sites occupied between 50 BC and AD 50 and in Britain for Roman sites of all periods [W. H. Manning, Catalog of the Romano-British Ironwork in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne , Department of Archaeology, University of Newcastle, 1976, p. 31 and Fig. 20, nos. 90-6.] [Hyland 1990 p 123] The first written mention of nailed horse shoes in the west is in the Tactica written by the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI sometime between 886 and 911 (his regnal years).

    Background
A horseshoe is a U-shaped metal plate, usually made of steel though aluminum is also used. Aluminum shoes are more expensive than steel. There are also plastic-coated metal shoes, and even all-plastic horseshoes. Two-piece shoes are made of steel with a removable plastic insert. The all-purpose steel shoe used for pleasure riding is known as a keg shoe, since they used to come in a wooden keg. The shoes can be attached with nails since the hoof is very dense and contains no nerves. The cost to shoe a horse ranges from $80-$280, depending on the type of shoe and material. There are about 15 other types of horseshoes, depending on the breed of the horse and its function. Some breeds use different shoes on the front hooves than on the back. Some shoes come with a traction device so the horse can grip the ground better. Thoroughbred racehorses use what is known as a racing plate made from aluminum on the front. For the hind feet, an aluminum shoe known as a caulk or cauk is used that is embedded with steel to help improve abrasion and wear resistance. Some aluminum shoes are more squared off to resemble a hoof from a healthy wild horse. Standardbred racehorses use a lightweight steel shoe in front that is designed with a half round section or a grooved section called a swage. Sometimes a combination of these two is used. Steel is used in the back. Different shoes are used whether the horse is a trotter or pacer. Horses used for hunting or jumping use a shoe similar to the keg but a bit wider. Sometimes a traction device called a stud (like cleats) is used that is screwed into the shoe before the show. Draft horses use a thicker shoe since they are much heavier and larger than most other breeds. Saddlebreds, which have special gaits, use a toe weight shoe, which is 1 in (2.54 cm) wide in the front and 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wide elsewhere.

The Significance of Horseshoes and Rubies
Written and Researched by Margaret Sypniewska THE HORSESHOE The power of the horseshoe has been recognized since before the birth of Christ. A horseshoe is a U-shaped metal frame, usually of iron, that is nailed to a horse's hoof to give protection against wearing them down on rough surfaces. In legend, a man named Jastrzebryk, a blacksmith(?) (in 999) was thought to be the first Polish man to use horseshoes for the protection of his horse's hooves. However, we know that horseshoes were actually used by the Greeks as early as the 4th century B.C. Since horses were believed to be one of the most sacred of animals, their crescent-shaped shoes became symbols of good luck. Horseshoes were often nailed over the outside thresholds of houses and barns so that witches could not enter. Horseshoes were thought to protect and bring good luck. On May Day, it was traditional to take down all horse-shoes and turn them, being careful not to let them touch the ground. Horseshoes can also be hung over the fireplace for luck, and even over the entrances of mines. Many think the heels should point upwards (but this is not universal). People think this because they believe if the shoe is hung with the ends pointing downwards, positive ill-luck may be drawn upwards, and all the good luck will disappear into the ground or drip out. Interestingly enough, the towns of Burlton and Oakham, in England, charged a "toll of the horseshoes," which was collected from every peer and member of the Royal family, who passed through their towns. Horseshoes are prominent in their town's coat of arms.

Horseshoes from the Heart Home About Us Endorsements Our Beneficiaries ... Links Run by Volunteers Cherished by Participants Supported by You In 1994, during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo season, a small trail ride to visit underprivileged school children began. A year later, a young man, confined to a wheelchair due to Spina Bifida, asked to be a part of the trail ride. Horseshoes from the Heart was born. Today, our annual trail ride has over 40 physically or mentally challenged children who become 'cowboys' for a day. What began as a small trail ride to a school now has several hundred participants including members from the Los Vaqueros Rio Grande Trail Ride Association and members of the Alabama Coushatta Indian tribe. We now ride to over a dozen schools, visiting thousands of children. Through the generous support of the Houston Margarita Society, we also have a custom made wagon designed to carry our wheelchair bound 'cowboys' on the trail rides. With the help of our many wonderful volunteers, Horseshoes from the Heart is able to host many events for children with special needs. We've taken them to fish farms, bowling, horseback riding, camping, parades and many other events. As a group, these children are able to truly enjoy themselves without concerns over what others may think of their disabilities. The volunteers work with these children, having them do as much as they are capable of. This helps to ensure that not only does child have a great time, but it also permits their parents and sibling an opportunity to enjoy more quality time with each other.

We at Fen Ridge Farm are proud of our product and hope it adds beauty as well as bringing the traditional good luck to your home. Fen Ridge Farm decorated horseshoes are created right here on the farm. It is very much a family effort. Most of the flowers are grown or harvested from our own fields and woods then dried and arranged in our rustic, beamed workshop. All hands help out where they can, either preparing the horseshoe, boxing or packing. The art of growing and arranging dried flowers has been a strong interest of mine for over 25 years. I grow a large percentage of the materials I use ensuring quality, freshness and true color retention. I have a background in art, both historical and applied which serves me well in the theme and use of color in the horseshoe designs. The balance of texture, shade and the materials themselves is essential for each horseshoe to be pleasing to the eye as well as the soul.
