Supplier of heavy lift commercial hovercraft
Managers of Hovertrans Inc. have over 30 years of experience in the design, manufacture and operation of heavy lift commercial hovercraft. This unique experience and knowledge has made Hovertrans World leaders in heavy lift commercial hovercraft design.
Extensive experience
General purpose load lifting commercial hovercraft have been in use in the Arctic regions of the Yukon River where two hovercraft barges provided round the clock, roll-on roll-off, ferry services to the construction of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline project. Hovertrans drilling platforms were used successfully in Scotland where attempts to take geological samples from an extensive area of peat bog marshland had been hampered for 30 years due to the unstable terrain. Another example: during expansion of plant facilities on Das Island located approximately 110 miles off the coast of Abu Dhabi, plans to construct temporary port facilities to handle equipment movements were dropped in favour of using a large amphibious hovercraft with a payload of 250 tons.

Moller M200G hovercraft heading into production
Posted Jul 21st 2007 4:00PM by Joshua Topolsky
Filed under: Transportation
Moller Industries, the brainchild of inventor Dr. Paul Moller, announced recently that production would begin on the company's M200G volantor, a UFO-esque hovercraft that apparently can "glide over terrain at 50 MPH." Moller, long known for his work in both hovercrafts and flying vehicles (see the dubious Skycar ), has been working on alternative forms of transportation for 40 years. The futuristic looking craft is driven by the company's Rotapower engines, and can allegedly operate up to 10 feet in altitude. Of course, while Moller Industries offers lots of exciting talk about the future of transportation (as well as t-shirts, models, and investment options) to its customers, the company has never brought a vehicle to market. Clearly, the announcement of a "Jetsons-like" craft may fuel enthusiast's hope (and pull in some escrow cash), but the actual production and sale of the $90,000+ vehicle has yet to be seen. Check the video after the break to see Dr. Moller's invention at work.

Hovering up and down is all very well, but where's the rapid horizontal movement which would make it a more practical alternative to a car? + it looks like it's struggling to stay level (although judging by the clothes and music this is no recent piece of footage)

it works quite well and seems to beg the question do hovercraft work by hovering or by distributing their weight very evenly?

Take the blade off the flymo. Use polythene dustsheet 15 ft square folded in from the corners, join with parcel tape. Details of toy hovercraft built on same principal follow.
The skirt must assume a doughnut shape or friction is too great. If making a toy, use a flimsy swing-bin liner or clingfilm, thicker polythene doesn't form an effective seal because it doesn't conform to the inequalities in the surface it's running over.
This one uses 4 AAA batteries and a geared fan
Understanding skirts opens the door to ceiling robots (travel on ceiling by sucking not blowing).
They can also go on walls but this is trickier because of the uphill problem.
This is a diagram of how to make a hand-over-hand wall climbing robot. They are easier than the wheeled variety. You have to make a push-pull mechanism using fishing line which winds/unwinds round a motorised shaft. One end of the dowel is rigidly attached to one of the plates (it is held by a drinking straw); the other end passes through a drinking straw which acts as a slider. By switching the fans on and off alternately and working the slider the robot can be made to climb a wall.
It is surprisingly tricky getting the wind/unwind idea to work.

Here's a cheap CHEAP way to demonstrate a batch of fizzix concepts in a really fun way. A student hovercraft can demonstrate Uncle Newton's Laws, air pressue, vacuums, Uncle Bernoulli, friction, center of mass/weight, conservation of momentum, and that learning actually can be fun and dangerous at times I got this particular design from fellow Fizzix Fixture, Harry Rheam, of Eastern High School in Voorhees, N J. He got a batch of us together about 14 or 15 years ago at Glassboro State College, now named Rowan University, and shared some of his neat ideas. Harry is one of the Demi-Gods of Fizzix teaching! Notice, mine uses the top of an old ShopVac, only 1.5hp. You don't need much. So, what to do with this thing?
  • Easiest thing is just to ride it ! It will skim across the floor almost resistance free. A few things to note while it is moving;
  • It ALWAYS moves in a straight line, verifying Uncle Newt's 1st Law. No matter what the kids do to it, it won't "curve".
  • Also along 1st Law stuff: when pushed, give it a little torque also. This will allow it to rotate while linearly moving. Note the rotation continues as well as the linear motion until crashing into a wall or a standing student's ankles.

Purpose The purpose of the Leaf-Blower Hovercraft Competition is to promote student interest in technology and engineering. This event places special emphasis on group problem solving techniques.
The Competition A team of up to four students will build and race a leaf-blower hovercraft. The race will be divided into two divisions:
    • Motor Propelled
    • Stick Propelled

Participants in each division will not be in competition against each other, but will "race the clock."
Construction (1) Build a leaf-blower hover craft using only the following materials:
  • ¾" circular plywood board no larger than 4 feet in diameter, or two 3/8" pieces of circular plywood board no larger than 4 feet in diameter.
  • 1-3 electric-powered leaf blowers arranged in any configuration.
  • 3 mil thick plastic (for bottom or hover craft skirt)
  • 1 stool (to sit on)(optional)
  • some device of you're choosing to provide horizontal propulsion
[No rockets or explosive devices can be used to provide horizontal propulsion]
[Note: leaf blowers can be configured to provide horizontal propulsion] (2) The leaf-blower hovercraft must be completely constructed by the students. If questions arise during the construction phase of your hovercraft, please e-mail inquiries to:

Universal Hovercrafts go anywhere in style
from On the Water (236 articles) A- A+ Universal Hovercrafts go anywhere in style Image Gallery ( 6 images ) October 21, 2004 Over land, water, ice or snow - the hovercraft offers a cost-effective, multi-purpose vehicle for recreation and transportation with the thrill of travelling on air. And now Universal Hovercraft has marketed a range of affordable hovercraft kits to house up to ten people in this dynamic mode of travelling, including the striking Hoverwing XR with retractable wings. Universal Hovercraft has been producing hovercraft technology since 1967 and has grown to become the world's largest supplier of hovercraft plans, kits, and parts. They have dozens of hovercraft, Wing in Ground Effect (WIG) and scale model kits available and their crafts can host single passengers all the way up to groups of ten plus people. Hovercraft Technology A hovercraft rides on air under pressure continuously supplied by a lift system and directed into a chamber under the craft. A flexible curtain called a skirt is attached to the outer perimeter of the craft that forms the air chamber and contains the air beneath. It is propelled forward with a thrust propeller. There are no brakes on a hovercraft (!) and stopping is achieved with a reduction of engine power or turning 180 degrees and applying full thrust. Steering is accomplished with moveable rudders mounted behind the thrust propeller and short period of training is required to learn how to drive.
