Irish Hurling A True Amateur Game
The game of hurling is more than just a game it is Ireland's national passion. But to appreciate hurling, one must look beyond the mere fact that it is a sport, because it is much more. Countering the trend towards big-money professional athletics, hurling has remained strictly amateur. It is a game played purely for the fun and history of it. It is a game woven deeply into the social fabric of the Irish people. Which is amazing when one considers just how extraordinarily dangerous the game is. First, the basics. Hurling is best compared to lacrosse. Hurling is an outdoor ball-and-stick game played with fifteen players on a field larger than a soccer pitch. Whereas lacrosse is played with netted sticks, hurling is a played with a flat wooden club, and the ball is struck by swinging the stick vice flinging it as in lacrosse. Hurling players can catch and carry the ball in the hand, but can only pass it by hitting it with the stick, kicking it, or slapping it by the hand. As you can surmise from the first photo, the object is to drive the ball either into a soccer-sized goal or 'over the bar'. A goal is worth three, over the bar is worth one. The common tactic is to accumulate single points, chasing goals only when a clear opportunity presents. An average senior-league score would be about 22-18, with three-to-five goals averaged per game.

Haggis Hurling The World Haggis Hurling Championships have taken off again backed by McKean Foods - the official sponsors of this long overdue event.
The tradition of Haggis Hurling dates back to early Scottish Clan Gatherings, where the women folk would toss a haggis across a stream to their husbands, who would catch the haggis in their kilts.
In the modern version a haggis is hurled for distance and accuracy from atop a platform (usually a whisky barrel).
Two variations on the tradition have developed, one enacted at festivals, the other a professional sport.
It is due to be presented as a demonstration sport at the 2004 Olympics!! The Scottish heats took place at the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games earlier this month. North America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand heats will follow soon in readiness for the World Championship next summer. The present World Record for Haggis Hurling has been held by Alan Pettigrew for over 18 years. Hardly surprising if you consider he threw a 1lb 8oz haggis an astonishing 180' 10'' on the island of Inchmurrin on Loch Lomond in August 1984. Click on the thumbnail for a full size picture of Alan "tossing the caber" - not, by the looks of it

Gaelic Football, Hurling are Irish Passions
Brian Handwerk
for National Geographic News
Updated March 17, 2003 Come March 17, many Americans and other people around the world will don green clothes, dine on corned beef and cabbage, and quench their thirst with a pint of Guinness Stout. Such rituals are part of the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration of all things Irish.
But how many of us will thrill to the grace of an athlete as he hurls the sliothar into the net for the winning goal? Or cheer battling footballers as they hand-pass and kick their way up the pitch? Printer Friendly Email to a Friend SHARE Digg StumbleUpon Reddit RELATED "It's ingrained in my nature as an Irishman," said John Keane of the Gaelic Athletic Association's North American Board. "It's a tremendously important part of my heritage. (As a child) you spoke Gaelic, enjoyed the Irish music and dancing, and you played the games." While the sports are an integral part of Ireland's national heritage, he noted, their organization also makes them sources of intense local pride. Teams represent Ireland's counties, and players must have family connections to, or live and work in, the counties they represent (most players have second jobs). The free-agency system familiar to North American sports fans does not exist. "This really makes you passionate about your team, because they really do represent you," Keane said.

Bheithir Hurling Rules:
I run a slightly modified version of the official gamea more medieval version that does not adhere strictly to all of the current, modern rules of the game. If you wish to participate, please first understand the following: 3) Be aware that some players might be new and still learning the game (give them a wider berthwe all started off a little bit hack-happy!) That being said, here are the rules by which we play:
Basic Rules: 1. Two equally sized teams (with a maximum of 15 players per team) are allowed to use their hurleys, feet, and other parts of the body (with the exception of the handssee more about this in the Fouls section) to maneuver the sliotar into the other team's goal. If there are more than 15 players to a side, players may be substituted in and out of the game at the discretion of the team captain. Players should be divided equally to cover forward, mid-field, and defense positions. 2. Games last approximately an hour (two 30 minute halves), with a 10 minute break in between the halves. Preferably, there is a referee and a medically inclined individual present. A referee must be present if there are more than 20 total participants.
