outdoor stick-and-ball game somewhat akin to field hockey and lacrosse and long recognized as the national pastime of Ireland . There is considerable reference to hurling ( in Gaelic) in the oldest Irish manuscripts describing the game as far back as the 13th century BC ; many heroes of ancient tales were expert hurlers. The stick used is called a hurley, in Gaelic, and s in relief decorate some monuments to 15th-century chieftains. Hurling was for long a game played between neighbouring clans or rival parishes with unlimited numbers of players on either side. In 1884 the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in Thurles, County Tipperary, to revive and standardize hurling and other traditional Irish pastimes. The hurley, or resembling a hockey stick except that the head is shorter and wider, is made of young pliable ash, 3.5 feet (1.07 m) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide in the oval-shaped striking blade. The width of the blade enables the ball to be hit overhead from man to man as well as along the ground. Each team consists of 15 players. The average pitch, or field, is 150 yards (137 m) long and 90 yards (82 m) wide. Goalposts at each end are 21 feet (6.4 m) high and 21 feet apart with a crossbar 8 feet (2.4 m) above the ground. A point is scored by hitting the ball over the opposing crossbar. A

Jump to: navigation search Kittens are most easily thrown by the scruff An ancient and dangerous sport from which modern day curling is derived, the Kitten Hurling Battle originated in the steamy jungles of what is now Quebec as a mating ritual of the Aztecs . Men would attempt to establish dominance over each other to impress females by measure of how vicious a kittening he could receive. The object of the sport is to force one's opponent into submission using nothing but kittens . Today, the sport is enjoyed by both sexes and has risen dramatically in popularity, narrowly beating out Gerbil Tennis as the national pastime of both France and Poland

Hurling
T his one of the traditional Gaelic sports, played mainly in Ireland. Irish mythology has tales of legendary heroes who were expert hurlers. The modern game has several similarities to Gaelic football, with the same number of players (15), similar goals and scoring. However, in hurling, the ball or 'sliotar' is about 25cm in circumference and can only be moved across the pitch using the 'hurley' stick. The latter is about 1m long, ending with an 8cm, curved blade. The sliotar can be taken off the hurley, prior to hitting it, but cannot be picked up by hand from the ground. Points are scored when the sliotar is hurled between the posts, scoring 1 point above the cross bar or 3 points into the net below the crossbar History of Hurling See also Wikipedia Milwaukee Hurling Club
The sport is still controlled by the Gaelic Athletic Association . There are limited associations outside Ireland, but South Australia and North America have active hurling responsibilities and give links to clubs
