Wired News just published my latest video-game column , and this one is about physical sports. It's got an an interesting pedigree. A while ago, I was chatting with Hasan Elahi, an art professor at Rutgers University (I was actually interviewing him for an upcoming story I've written about him for Wired magazine.) I mentioned to Elahi that I'm fascinated by game design, and wondered idly why in an age where video-game design is flowering there's almost no-one designing new physical sports. Elahi informed me that one of his grad students, Tom Russotti, actually was designing new sports, and he put me in touch with him. Ta da : A few months later, I hooked up with Russotti in Prospect Park here in Broolyn, where I got a chance to play one of his new sports! (That video above is a record of our spastic game: I'm the guy in the jeans who appears in the first scene.) Interestingly, this column highlights the dirty secret about my

The Skills of Hurling Hurling Skills
Choose a Skill
Hurling Skills There are many different skills involved in the game of Hurling. One renowned hurling coach outlined over 170 skills in the game! The skills can be broadly broken down into those that involve Gaining Possession, Maintaining Possession, Releasing Possession and Contesting Possession. Many of these skills can be performed on the ground, without the need to get the ball into the hand and out of the hand.
  • Gaining Possession
Involves gaining possession and control of the sliotar. Thus, skills such as catching, and lifting are included along with skills involved in getting control of the sliotar using the Hurley.
  • Maintaining Possession
Once the sliotar is under the control of the player, there are a number of skills which help the player in possession to maintain possession. These skills encompass ground skills, handling skills and evasion skills.
  • Releasing Possession
Involves striking the sliotar, with either the hand or the Hurley. Many of these skills can be performed with a stationary sliotar or a moving sliotar, while the player is stationary or while the player is moving.
  • Contesting Possession
Involves many of the skills used to tackle an opponent in possession, or to contest for possession when neither player is in possession of the sliotar.

68. History Of Hurling
Similar to a game depicted in ancient Egyptian cave drawings, dated circa 2000 BCE, hurling is considered to be the oldest Irish game.

A Brief History of Hurling
by Lady Elisabetta Maldestro You might think that it would be easy to trace the origins of a sport. If you are researching a modern sports it easy; most of them organized in the late nineteenth century. If you are examining a local pastime an area's landscape should answer your questions, for instance the Nigerian plains inspiring running races. But if you're researching an ancient sport, tracing the origin is almost impossible. Hurling is one of these sports. Similar to a game depicted in ancient Egyptian cave drawings, dated circa 2000 BCE, hurling is considered to be the oldest Irish game. The first written record of this pre-Christian sport is a mention in the Brehon Laws, compiled during the 5th century. No one knows where the sport originated from and whether or not it was native to Ireland or brought over from one of the many tribes that conquered or settled in the Emerald Isle, but there are two theories that link the ancient Irish to Egypt. First, and most probably, is that hurling traveled with the nomadic tribe known as the Celts when they first landed in Ireland around 600 BCE. Linguistically the Celts belong to an Indo-European culture, and it is known that they once lived in the Semitic areas . Another theory leads us back to the ancient Milesian legends, which are written in

Jump to: navigation search Hurling (in Irish iom¡naocht or iom¡int ) is an Irish outdoor team sport similar to hockey , played by two teams of 15 people. Kilkenny V Wexford in Croke Park The object of the game is for players to use a wooden axe-shaped stick called a hurley (in Irish a "cam¡n", pronounced kam-awn), or a hurl , to hit a small ball called a sliotar (pronounced slith-er) between the opponents' goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal, which is equivalent to three points. The ball can be caught in the hand and carried for not more than four steps, struck in the air, or struck on the ground with the stick. It can be kicked or slapped with an open hand (the hand pass) for short-range passing. A player who wants to carry the ball for more than three steps has to bounce or balance the ball on the end of the stick, and the ball can only be handled twice while in his possession.
