Sensei's Passing
Dear instructors, students and friends, Mitsuzuka Takeshi Sensei passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008. He was a great man and a great teacher. I loved him very much. I am deeply saddened at his passing but I am focusing on how fortunate I was to have had the time I had with him. I will remember his thoughtful instruction, his smile and his jokes too. He brought so much joy and inspiration to all of his San Shin Kai family in the US and worldwide. We will miss him. Please honor him by keeping his Iaido alive though us. Sincerely, Roger Wehrhahn

Thoughts on Iaido
This is a translation of an article appearing in the 25 March 1988 issue of Nippon Budo Monthly. indicates footnotes.
After the war I had the distinct honor on three occasions to meet sensei Nakayama Hakudo . He was from Ishikawa prefecture and told me that in the year of Taisho five (1917), he traveled to Tosa in Kochi prefecture to ask the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu headmaster for permission to receive instruction, only to be refused entry simply because "he is from other prefectures." However, later in his life they decided to initiate him into the teaching, allowing him to present a petition on the condition that he not teach what he learned. The situation surrounding the transmission of teachings was like this even during the Taisho period (1912-1925). In short, without trying to find fault with old techniques, the predecessors of the old tradition of sword techniques (koryu toho) should preserve the techniques as nontangible cultural assets. The successors are, in my opinion, responsible for passing the tradition of techniques to the next generation.

What is Iaido?
Iaido is one of the Japanese traditional Budo concerned with drawing the blade and cutting in the same motion. ( Budo means martial arts or military arts in Japan). A typical form consists of the draw and cut, a finishing cut, cleaning the blade and returning it to the scabbard, all without looking away from the imaginary opponent. Most practice is solo, eventually with shin-ken (a real blade). In contrast with Kendo, Iaido is performed without protective coverings of any kind. Students must strive to achieve power, precision and perfection in their form. Along the way they learn balance, grace, and control both of the body and the mind. Iaido dealt more with everyday situation rather than those on the battlefield. The term "Iai" is taken from the Japanese phrase: "Tsune ni ite, kyu ni awasu"

Iaido translates to the way of drawing the sword. Making the sword a lethal weapon from the instant it is unsheathed is the main concept behind Iai and Batto styles. For the most part Iaido is a kata driven style, but that doesn't mean it is at all limited as a martial art.
At the Bushi-kan dojo we train in Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido. This style was brought back to the states for us by Kyoshi Joe "Hanokami" Bass. The late Joe Bass was the first American to recieve the honor of being recognized as a Samurai after his training in Japan. It was my honor to learn from Kyoshi Bass (or Kyosh as we called him), his skill with a blade and as a teacher knew no bounds.
I am a San-dan (3rd degree Blackbelt) in Iaido under Kyoshi Bass and that (to me) speaks to the quality behind my training. I now teach Iaido (which I love) to anyone who is willing to learn. The class has no real restrictions as far as someone being too young etc.. everyone is welcome to participate, though Iai does gear itself toward the more mature. In ranks of students we have various levels of ability, most come to us from other styles entirely...but the love for the japanese sword has brought us all together. All levels of students learn side by side, often you will learn as much from each other as you will from me. Our classes are mostly held at the Hall of 50 States located in downtown Ft. Myers. Iaido is always on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10:30pm. From time to time we do train out of the Garden Center directly in front of Lee Memorial Hospital.

Iaido classes are offered at Methuen Aikido weekly Thursday at 7:30pm.
What is Iaido?
Iaido is the art of drawing a sword. It is a modern non-combative discipline based on the proficient use of the traditional Japanese sword. Training develops the student's mental and physical abilities. Practice is done by reacting to a sword attack and launching a counter attacking with a sword. The Iaidoka uses a sword: not to control the opponent, but to control himself. See the Methuen Kirei Iaido Curriculum.
Iaido is mostly performed solo as a series of Kata. The Iaidoka executes various techniques against single or multiple imaginary opponents. Each Kata begins and ends with the sword sheathed. In addition to sword technique, practitioners require imagination and concentration in order to maintain the feeling of a real fight and to keep the Kata fresh. In order to properly perform the kata, Iaidoka also learn posture and movement, grip, and swing.
Iaido forms (kata) are characterized by drawing of the sword from the sheath in a continuous fluid like motion cutting an imaginary attacker, followed by the finishing cut, cleansing of the blade, and lastly resheathing the blade.
