A lawn dart set usually includes four large darts and two targets. The game play and objective are similar to both horseshoes and darts . The darts are similar to the ancient Roman plumbata . They are typically 12 inches long with a weighted metal or plastic tip on one end and three plastic fins on a rod at the other end. The darts are intended to be tossed underhand toward a horizontal ground target, where the weighted end hits first and sticks into the ground. The target is typically a plastic ring, and landing anywhere within the ring scores a point. Either variation can be played one-on-one or in teams of two. In the team version the players stand with one member from each team at each end (when throwing, they should be sure to stand well back when the other side is throwing) and toss the darts to a target about 50 feet away (with variation based on the players skill and the venue in which the game is being played). In Traditional Lawn Darts, points are scored when a dart lands in the target area. Usually if a player from each team lands a dart in the target, the scores cancel each other (so if Team A got 2 darts into the target, and Team B got 1 in, Team A would get 1 point and Team B would get 0). Also, some versions of Lawn darts include a smaller "bulls-eye" ring for additional points.

skip to main skip to sidebar 15 Minute Lunch Don't expect too much. Jarts, anyone? Hmmm. Until I just wrote that last post, I hadn't thought of Lawn Darts in years. Now I feel compelled to write about them. I wonder what genius thought that one up? We had a set when we were kids I think they were actually called " Jarts For those of you who aren't familar with this old toy, it was pretty much just two sets of giant darts. They had a weighted, sharpened metal spike on one end, and fins and a grip on the other end. You would set a plastic ring at each end of your lawn, and each team would try to put their darts into the ring on the far side of the yard for points. It was basically just an extremely dangerous game of horse shoes. I think the rules were you played until 10 points were scored or someone was impaled. I can't remember how long these things were actually on the market but I do remember that the alarming number of people showing up at the hospital with giant darts sticking out of their heads caused the company to do the smart thing and pull them from the shelves. Regardless, you haven't lived until you've had to dive out of the way of a blue death missle coming directly at your head from across the yard. I can still hear the THWOCK! sound it made when it barely missed you and drilled itself into the ground 30 feet from anything remotely resembling a plastic ring.

Back in late 1983 I drew this cover for FLAMING CARROT #2 . The story was DEATH GETS DRUNK . There's a very cool Swedish movie from the fifties that you always saw in film class called THE SEVENTH SEAL . There is a classic scene in it, where a medieval knight plays Death a game of chess to keep his soul. I was goofing on this arty film when I had the Carrot wanting to play Death a game of JARTS We did the ash cans of the issue (ash cans are sort of prototype issues, usually xeroxed and sent to distributors or taken to conventions to promote and "road test" the book) and I was real proud of the wacky reference to the famous Bergman film. When people around here didn't laugh at the cover I assumed it was the obscurity of the film but then some asked "What's jarts?" I soon discovered that a lot of people had never heard of this "lawn" game where you have these rings you lay on the ground and toss the large Javelin like darts into the rings, kind of like horse shoes. It was a fad thing up North when I was growing up and sort of a quintessential '60's thing like hoolahoops or pez dispensers, very suburban and very kitschy, but it apparently never made it down South. Anyway, I redrew the cover a second time using a whiffle ball as the gag and everything was fine. I did use the face of Death from the first cover, pasting a xerox of it over the second face because I liked it better.

But for many people it was a good alternative to horseshoes, as it didn't gouge up your lawn. Bob Lawson notes that the game was great fun (for me too!): I've used this example in class to highlight the trade-off between safety and other values (i.e., fun!). Somewhat shockingly I ask my students, "Ok, we have a game that provides millions of hours of fun and enjoyment for hundreds of thousands of people. Unfortunately, a few kids get maimed and maybe even killed. That's a price I'm willing to pay!" If they recoil in horror at my inhumanity, as they often do, I remind them that this isn't that different from saying, "Ok, we have this device that provides us with the incredible ability to get from place to place quickly. Friday, February 8, 2008 Mikes Jarts No 2,3 With the local gliding scene moving to the thermal competetions there has been a break in Jart activity. The sucess of my red Jart has prompted me to build 2 more, my son has his eye on one , so I am glad I bothered to make a mould. I spray the moulds and , during other layup projects I use the off cut glass cloth , that comes from wing layups were the roll is cut at 45 degrees and there are big off cuts. I then build Jart and other fuselages. Will post progress of these two as I go later. A few years back, he left our city of Athens, Ohio to seek greener pastures in the warmer and larger city of Athens, Georgia. Since then Troy has been diagnosed with cancer, recovered, and is now once again back in Athens, Ohio. Troy is returning to the local music scene this Saturday January 20th at the Donkey with a new project. The vehicle for his return isn't a solo project, but instead a new band called "The Jarts." It's a band comprised of well known members of the coffee house scene. A folk super-group, if you will.
