    Jiu Jitsu
Every fight ends up on the floor
    By SARAH FELDBERG
Thursday, March 15, 2007 STORY TOOLS More Explore Share and Enjoy What would happen if you put a sumo wrestler, a karate expert, two kickboxers, a professional boxer, a savate (French kickboxing) black belt, a shootfighter, and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt together in a ring? Who would be left standing when the proverbial smoke had cleared? In 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado the world found out. During The Ultimate Fighting Challenge’s inaugural mixed martial arts tournament, eight fighting experts matched up to determine which discipline of pain reigns supreme. After three rounds of fighting and seven individual bouts, one man emerged as the champion: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master Royce Gracie. On a warm Monday evening at Gold’s Gym in Naples, the crowd is substantially less intimidating. A handful of men and women dressed in T-shirts and gym shorts unfold long gray panel mats on the floor of a workout studio and mill around quietly as they await the arrival of their instructor, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher Roberto Torralbas.

Jiu Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu is a form of self-defense that originated during feudal times in Japan. “Jiu-Jitsu” techniques require minimal effort for the maximum effect. Through the use of leveraging and understanding of human anatomy, one can disarm, submit or negate any attacker – regardless of your size, gender and strength. This is done mainly by means of joint manipulation, strikes, throws and chokes. The goal of a Jiu-Jitsu technique is to end a fight in 5 seconds or less.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an empty hand self-defense system that was developed and made famous by the Gracie family who emigrated from Brazil. They started the “No Holds Barred” competitions in America, which is currently the fastest growing martial art in America. What made what they do so special is that they specialize in ground fighting and have made it a science, by developing techniques to benefit the smaller person. Check the schedule for class times.

ka·ta [ kaa taa]
noun
sequence of movements in martial arts: a sequence of movements in some martial arts such as karate, used either for training or to demonstrate technique
[Mid-20th century. From Japanese, literally "model, pattern."]
From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
Kata are detailed patterns of defense-and-attack movements used by many traditional martial arts such as Budo disciplines (Aikido, Iaido, Jodo, Judo, Jiu_jitsu, Karate, Kendo) and Tae Kwon Do. Tai Chi Chuan practice also resembles the kata of other martial arts.
The word kata means "form". The form can be composed for solo practise, like in karate, or for exercise in pairs. According to legend, the kata in Karate were devised by a Japanese master, banished to a small island for his drunkenness. With no one to practice with, he instead put together sequences of moves performed solo. Karate students rowing to the island were then taught the kata in return for smuggled alcohol.
The kata practitioner executes a specified series of from 20 or so to as many as 70 moves, generally with stepping and turning, and attempting to maintain as nearly-perfect form as possible. The number of moves in a kata may be referred to in the name of the kata eg. Gojushiho, which means 54 steps. The number of moves may also have links with Buddhist spirituality - the number 108 is significant in Buddhism and kata whose numbers of moves are factors of 108 such as 54, 36 and 27 reflect this link.

UAE: a market in sheer growth
Discovering new territories for Jiu-Jitsu By Carl£o Santos, GMA Member in Abu Dhabi, UAE I founded the United Arab Emirates Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Team, the country's national team, during my second Visit to the United Arab Emirates to teach, in October of 2002 This was made posslble by the partnership Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) set up with Ze Mario Sperry and the Brazilian Top Team, with the aim of bringing black belts here. Among my activities, I teach classes to nearly the entire family of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, besides teaching the national defense and the army special forces. Around here I also work as an organizer of tournaments. It's not easy, since I have to run after sponsors and oversee the entire organization, doing almost everything on my own. But now I have the support of teachers Olavo Abreu and Suyan Queiroz, who are providing me backup. I entered this field because, ever since I first arrived in this region, I noted the lack of competitions being held. My idea always was to put on big events here and around the region, with the hope of bringing the Asian and World championships here some day. The main difficulties in the region have been the lack of professionalism of a lot of people and ignorance about the sport. Nevertheless, the work also brings rewards such as beinq able to watch Jiu-Jitsu grow, hearing people talk about and all the friends you make.
