The definition of jogging as compared with running is not standard. Dr. George Sheehan , a running expert, is quoted to have said "the difference between a jogger and a runner is an entry blank". Others are usually more specific, defining jogging as running slower than 6mph (10 minute per mile pace, 10 km/h, 6 min/km).

The term to jog/jogging as a form of exercise originated in England in the mid seventeenth century . This usage became common throughout the empire and in his novel My Run Home the Australian author Rolf Boldrewood wrote "your bedroom curtains were still drawn as I passed on my morning jog". In the United States jogging was also called "roadwork" when athletes in training such as boxers , customarily ran several miles each day as part of their conditioning. In

So, I ran to the end of the road, and when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason, I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I've gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know, I went. My mama always said you got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that's what my running was all about. I had run for three years, two months, 14 days, and 16 hours." That's from the movie Forrest Gump , when Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) runs in scene after scene after scene. We have found through the use of an online survey and Internet forums that joggers often run with others. Out of 77 responses from regular joggers 57% replied that they run with at least one other person. The top four reasons for running with others were:

A Catholic priest facing an indecent exposure charge after police said he went jogging in the nude about an hour before sunrise was placed on administrative leave Thursday. The Rev. Robert Whipkey told officers he had been running naked at the Frederick High School track and didn't think anyone would be around at that time of day, a police report said. He told officers he sweats profusely if he wears clothing while jogging. "I'm a heavy man, and wearing clothing while running makes me sweat profusely," Whipkey was quoted as saying in the police report. "I know what I did was wrong," he said in the report. In a statement, the Archdiocese of Denver said Whipkey previously was investigated for "inappropriate personal behavior" more than eight years ago when he was the pastor of St. Anthony's Parish in Sterling, Colo.
