By Joel Garreau Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, July 7, 2007; Page C01 The sight of the new French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, jogging often wearing his favorite NYPD T-shirt has fired up a tempest in a Reebok in France and Britain this summer. Sarkozy's running is an un-French, right-wing conspiracy, suggests Paris ' left-wing newspaper Lib©ration. In response, British commentators gleefully conclude: The French have lost their minds, again. On the primary state television channel, France 2, Alain Finkielkraut, a leading French intellectual, recently demanded that Sarkozy give up his "undignified" exercise. Not only did he imply that exposing the boss's naked knees is something that never would have occurred in the time of Mitterrand, much less Louis XIV, Finkielkraut claimed strolling is the proper activity of the thinking person, from Socrates to the poet Arthur Rimbaud. Nicolas Sarkozy returns to the Elysee Palace after a much-scrutinized jog.

Running or jogging
Running and jogging are aerobic exercises. Running and jogging affect the heart, lungs, muscles, and bones. Both these aerobic exercises help the body make over-all improvements. Jogging is not the same as walking. Jogging requires more muscle activity for the added speed, up-and-down bouncing, deeper breathing, and balancing. A beginning exerciser should start an exercise program with walking not jogging. The best routine is to exercise gently and then rest, exercise gently and rest, over and over. This should be done until the body is more fit and the resting heart rate gradually decreases. Then the body will be ready to begin sustained jogging, not before. Running requires a lot of effort. It is more intense than jogging. Running speed is affected by stride length and frequency as well as total body fitness. Runners are more likely to enter running competitions and fun runs. They train to improve their pace and level of fitness. Runners or joggers who want to add hand, wrist, or ankle weights need to add weights that are light (one pound or less). Keep in mind that adding weight to the hands places stress at the elbow and shoulder joints. Adding weight to the ankles places stress at the knee and hip joints. People with degenerative joint conditions should not use hand and ankle weights.

Jogging on Roosevelt Island
Ever wondered what it was like to run or jog around Roosevelt Island? Blogging triathlete Swim, Bike Run Race describes his January run from Astoria to and around Roosevelt Island. ...the short bridge connecting Queens and Roosevelt Island is currently facing renovations, so I trek across under a canopy of plastic as seen to the left. At this point, I'm feeling quite good; the crisp sub-20 degree air is more refreshing than chilling.
Heading south along the East side of the island, I cross under the Queensboro Bridge and turn back for a rather beautiful shot of one of the city's major borough connectors. In more temperate weather, I hit the Queensboro Bridge to embark on my long bike rides in Central Park.
At the South end of the island, I head toward the West side of the island with a great view of some of Manhattan's East side landmarks, including the U.N. building. Roosevelt Island's South end is currently a wasteland of overgrown weeds and razor
wire. However, there are plans for a Spring 2008 park opening so that is definitely something to look forward to.

        Before you read any further, note that every stroller manufacturer will say that inline skating with their products is not recommended in any way whatsoever. In this regard, despite my own intentions to skate with a stroller, I also cannot officially recommend that anyone else does so, and that if you do, you do so at your own risk.     Filed under: Jogging for Normal People My big excuse for not running as often as I'd like is my schedule. I've started taking care of my daughter in the afternoons, so my work day has been cut in half which means picking up the slack at night, on the weekends, and whenever else I can find a moment to get something done. By the time I'm finished or, more accurately, I have to stop before my brain implodes I feel so exhausted that all I want to do is park in front of the tube and veg. That's where I was last night knowing I had to write this column in the morning, and feeling guilty because someone who writes about jogging should really do it at least sometimes. But in that moment I think I would've rather quit, thrown my computer out the window and sworn off the Internet before I laced up my running shoes. However, I'm a slave to duty, so I picked myself up off the sofa, changed into my one pair of "moisture wicking" shorts, and left. I figured I'd be on the road about 5 minutes before my legs would buckle, but much to my delight that's not what happened at all.

He studied track and field events in detail and over the years published numerous articles in athletic and medical journals about training methods, running techniques and the prevention of injuries. Bill Bowerman and Eugene cardiologist Waldo Harris, M.D. wrote this 19-page booklet called "Jogging" in 1966 to help the average American get fit through running. They expanded the original booklet into a best-selling book in 1967. View a slideshow of pages from the original booklet Below, read excerpts and download the full text of three of his articles. The article "Running" is in its original draft form with handwritten corrections.
    It is quite simple to observe that great middle distances runners have usually been medium to just above average in height, slightly below average in weight, slight of build, with well-defined musculature. They also usually have a somewhat lower pulse rate than average. But to select runners purely on the basis of these characteristics would probably result in little more success than choosing them by the color of their eyes and hair. Champions and potential champions must have an abundance of energy and tenacity. They must be willing to stick to workout procedures that would seem grueling to the average person, to perform them in fair weather and foul. Furthermore, they are eager, not only to defeat opposition, but to push themselves to full capacity on the competitive field.

    I have a spotty memory. I saw this guy the other day, for example, and I remember that his name is Daniel and that I think he's nice and smart, but don't know where I know him from! I'm also pretty hopeless when I've lost something.

I mean REALLY think of ketchup. Imagine the shape of the bottle, the salty-sweet tomatoey goodness inside, etc. It's just a tool of course but I have often found that focusing on something totally unrelated will often bring about the necessary memory after a few moments.
