When Camelot was new, President Kennedy's fondness for the lyrics made its misty romanticism into a metaphor for his Administration. The egalitarianism of the Round Table and the script's palaver about the rule of law echoed public optimism about the United Nations and the potential of the Third World. We live in more cynical times, and Camelot now plays as just a hokey love triangle. That aspect is not too pertinent either: while Queen Guenevere fights off her adulterous yearnings toward Lancelot in keeping with the morality of the past, Britain's present Queen-in-waiting makes indiscreet phone calls and negotiates a separation. Camelot might be fun for its lush score If Ever I Would Leave You, How to Handle a Woman and the title number if the current revival did not look so silly, ham it up so much and underscore so painfully the indefinition and lack of motivation in all the characters. Instead, the national touring production that opened on Broadway last week proves Stephen Sondheim's dictum that nothing dates faster than a musical.

He slayeth Sir Argon le Paresseux Now Brother Perardua, though he was but a Zelator of our ancient Order, had determined in himself to perform the Magnum Opus, and to procure for himself one Tincture of Double Efficacy. Not fully did he yet comprehend the Mysterium of our Art, therefore imposed he upon himself the painful sevenfold regimen. For without the Bell of Electrum Magicum of Paracelsus how should, the adept even give warning to the Powers of the Work of his entry thereunto. Yet our brother, being of stout heart- for he had been a soldier in many distant lands- began right cheerfully. His head that was hoary with eld he crowned with five petals of white lotus, as if to signify the purity of his body, and went forth into that place where is no field, nor any furrow therein; and there he sowed a scroll that had two and twenty seeds diverse. He slayeth Sir Abjad the Saracen Nor for all his care and labour could he gather therefrom more than seven planets, that shone in the blackness; and each plant beareth a single blossom that hath seven petals© one would have thought them stars; for though they were not of a verity in themselves brilliant and flashing, yet so black was that wherein they grew that they seemed brighter than suns. And these were placed one above the other in a single line and straight, even according unto seven centers of his intention that he bare about him in the hollow tube that hath thirty and two joints.

    Directions
In the "Gawain's Word" segment featured in many Between the Lions episodes, two knights on hobby horses demonstrate word blending through a make-believe joust. You can stage a similar jousting with your child. You will need two knights (your child and a friend or other family member) and several pairs of word cards. Each pair contains the beginning part and the ending part of a word that the knights will blend together. Here are suggested pairs: If your knights have hobby horses or yardsticks they'd like to ride, that is fine. Invisible make-believe horses work equally well. Give one knight the card with the beginning part of the word and the other knight the card with the ending part of the same word. Practice saying the word part with each knight, then help the knights practice the word blending chant together. The first knight will shout the first part followed quickly by the second knight shouting the second part. Start the joust. The knights will hold out their word cards like lances and gallop toward each other as they say the word blending chant. When they meet in the middle, they will blend the word parts together, say the mystery word, and act it out:

While opinions rocketed back and forth, no one tracked down principal author and asked about counter-arguments and methodological niggles. So I did. THE INTERVIEW: In the course of several cordial e-mail exchanges, I put a series a questions to Burnham based on the comments made by Pajamas Media readers, in the comments section of a recent article by Iraq the Model. Most online objections fall into one of three categories: timing of publication (or motivation), methodology, and results. I asked him about the last two, in the course of reporting for another publication.

Was the change of mentalities only a mirage? With political jousting between secularists and a religious-minded government showing increasing signs of spilling over into the economy, analysts increasingly fear the answer may be yes. In a country where life expectancy is 66, Sezer argued, setting retirement age for men at 65 was unjust, a violation of the constitution’s description of Turkey as a "social state." The veto prompted howls of protest in Turkish financial circles. According to Serhan Cevik, a senior analyst with the investment bank Morgan Stanley, the president’s justification for his veto were "factually misinformed and fundamentally misguided." In his May 16 investors report, Cevik attributed indicated that Sezer’s veto of the retirement-age bill was the latest example of an ideological clash between advocates of a liberal economy and a "statist tradition inherited from the Ottomans." Inside Turkey, speculation is rife that the May 10 veto was an act of political resistance by a staunch secularist, who has long been at loggerheads with the religious-minded government, led by the moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP).

"Using data is popular; contributing data is unpopular."
This is a typically fresh quote from the official report ( http://www.cordis.lu/lifescihealth/genomics/home.htm http://www.nature.com/ng/journal/v37/n8/full/ng0805-783.html ). The workshop concluded that Europe has already started most of the projects necessary to the success of such an integrated database (which at the global scale we call HUGOBase). Participants also emphasized that it will be necessary to hold a peer-reviewed competition to identify those coalitions that have the capacity to integrate the results of other data producers.
Some of the existing HUGOBase components assembled by the EU researchers and their allies. As with the EU itself, the eventual number of participants is an open question. A single database for human variation data is unfeasible because of the diversity of producers, disciplines, funding mechanisms and user needs. Fortunately, Europe is home to a number of bioinformatics grid technologies for linking databases (for example, see

    Supersonic Jousting Combats Shockwaves
ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2006) See also: Now, jet-borne jousting is combating supersonic shockwaves, hopefully enough to lessen the resulting sonic boom heard on the ground. Gulfstream Aerospace and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center have teamed in a project called Quiet Spike to investigate the suppression of sonic booms. The project centers around a retractable, 24-foot-long lance-like spike mounted on the nose of NASA Dryden's F-15B research testbed aircraft. The spike, made of composite materials, creates three small shock waves that travel parallel to each other all the way to the ground, producing less noise than typical shock waves that build up at the front of supersonic jets. Before flying with the giant spike, NASA Dryden engineers and technicians, working alongside their Gulfstream counterparts, mounted it on the aircraft and conducted various structural tests on the ground. "The partnership between Gulfstream and Dryden during Quiet Spike installation and ground testing on the F-15B has produced a wealth of valuable information. The duration of this flight test effort will prove to be exciting and informative for everyone involved," said Leslie Molzahn, NASA Dryden's operations engineer on the project.

Primary Sources 1524 King Henry VIII has a jousting accident. The account at right was written by George Cavendish, Cardinal Wolsey s gentlemanusher.
    http://englishhistory.net/tudor/h8joust.html
The account at right was written by George Cavendish, Cardinal Wolsey's gentleman-usher. Henry VIII was a superb athlete but, as he grew older, his prowess often came at the expense of his health. Historians have speculated that the injuries he suffered may have contributed to his increasingly bad headaches (and correspondingly short temper.) On 10 March the king, having a new armor made to his own design and fashion, such as no armorer before that time had seen, though to test the same at the tilt, and ordered a joust for the purpose. The lord marquis of Dorset and the earl of Dorset and the earl of Surrey were appointed to be on foot: the king came to one end of the tilt and the duke of Suffolk to the other. Then a gentleman said to the duke: 'Sir the king is come to the end of the tilt.' 'I see him not,' said the duke, 'by my faith, for my headpiece blocks my sight.' With these words, God knows by what chance, the king had his spear delivered to him by the lord Marquis, the visor of his headpiece being up and not down or fastened, so that his face as quite naked. The gentleman said to the duke: 'Sir the king is coming.' The duke immediately disarmed and came to the king, showing him the closeness of his sight, and he swore that he would never run against the king again. But if the king had been even a little hurt, his servants would have put the duke in jeopardy. Then the king called his armorers and put all his pieces of armor together and then took a spear and ran six courses very well, by which all men could see that he had taken no hurt, which was a great joy and comfort to all his subjects present.
