In addition to the Natural Chimneys Joust, the National Jousting Hall Of Fame Joust is held each year at Natural Chimneys Regional Park on the 3rd Saturday of June.
Jousting -Older than the Kentucky Derby,
older than baseballborn in the Middle Ages and nursed by chivalrythat's the story of jousting, a test of horsemanship, balance and marksmanship. To the command, "Charge, Sir Knight!", renewal of America's oldest consecutively run sporting event takes place the 3rd Saturday in August each year at Natural Chimneys, Mt. Solon, Virginia, in a revival of medieval pageantry.
Originally a game in which death frequently claimed the loser, jousting has lost none of its flavor in its modern form, where knights in bright garb send their pointed lances through steel rings instead of through the breast plates of mail-clad foemen.
Begun in 1821 to settle which of two local men should have a certain damsel for his wife, the Mt. Solon Tournament has been run each year on the third Saturday in August before crowds numbering in the thousands. Using lances, some of them a hundred years old, riders from Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and, of course, Virginia test their skill at plucking three steel rings from crossbars while riding their chargers down a ninety yard course in not more than eight seconds.
Jousting's birth is credited to a certain Frenchman, Geoffroi de Pruelli, who died in the same year that William the Conqueror defeated Harold at Hastings (1066) and became the first Norman King of England. Some authorities, however, doubt that any one man "invented" the sport; but the consensus is that it did originate in France in the 11th Century. From France the sport spread to Germany, thence England and Southern Europe. In 1821 it came to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in its modified, humane form.

Font Font There is an underground group that you don't know about. They perfect their trade in back allies and in malls. These warriors show no mercy. They are the finger jousters.
Well, maybe they aren't so underground anymore. Finger jousting is on the up and up and it's time we all catch the finger fever. The game of finger jousting is pretty easy to understand. Basically, you have two gladiators who must poke each other.
Usually, the two warriors start off with a sign of respect like a bow or a handshake. Then, they lock their hands together and wait. The match does not begin until both index fingers are extended. Once the fingers are drawn out, it's on. The player must try and poke the other person in any place but the right arm. A prize is decided for the winner beforehand. This is usually something as simple as honor or as complex as a

    More jousting over the GWOT
Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2007 3:31 PM by Mark Murray Filed Under: Democrats Republicans Security
From NBC's Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
At a town hall today in Florida, Romney pounced on Edwards' statement yesterday that the "war on terrorism" is nothing more than a slogan. Per a transcript provided by his campaign, Romney said, "I was shocked to see just a day or two ago, John Edwards – a candidate for President of the United States – say there's not a War on Terror." There were boos.
Romney continued, "Yeah, boo. Maybe he needs to explain that to the people in London, to the people in Madrid, to the people in Tanzania, to the people in Saudi Arabia. Explain that to the people in Indonesia, in Bali. Explain that to the people of New York City. Explain that to the people of Lebanon. Explain that to the people in Israel that there's not a War on Terror. You see the terrorists are fighting a war on us. We've got to make sure that we’re fighting a war on them."
Interestingly, Edwards took this shot just a few hours ago. "George Bush has made America less safe and less respected in the world... And what we're seeing now in this campaign is John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, the other Republicans running for president of the United States are trying to be a bigger, badder George Bush. Is that really what America wants over the next four years?"

For the first time, the King of Portugal's 1438 treatise, LIVRO DA ENSINANCA DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA, will be available in English. Never before translated even into modern Portuguese, Antonio Franco Preto has delivered a superb rendition of this most important treatise. The is a chivalric treatise written by a renowned medieval king who was an expert in his subject matter. Superbly educated, the king wrote about fundamentals of medieval horsemanshipincluding specifics about clothing, shoes, saddles and tackabout the seat and riding securely in the saddle, details about the medieval hunt, about how to joust, including roles for the knight's assistants and squires, about different kinds of lances, about wrestling and fighting with the sword. This work is a prize of medieval literature and Portuguese history that has languished in obscurity owing to its difficulty. But Dom Duarte was considered to be one of the great kings of Portugal, and his work, dedicated to his wife, left Portugal with her as she departed for Naples with the king's death. When the French overran Naples in 1495, the book was transferred to the French National Library, which it remains today. Although several old editions have appeared in Portugal, they were in the original language and were extremely difficult.

2nd New Zealand International Jousting Tournament
Saturday, February 24th, 2001
Introduction
The tournament is being held as part of the annual Upper Hutt Summer Carnival. It follows the same format as the 1999 tournament with separate skill-at-arms and jousting competitions. The Summer Carnival is an annual non-profit community fund raising event which attracts up to 20,000 spectators. The tournament will also decide the Australasian Champion for both events. Currently both are held by Rodney Walker (Australia). The Upper Hutt City Council is partially sponsoring the tournament and is activity assisting us with finding another sponsor. The Order of the Boar is organising and hosting the tournament. We are holding both a non-contact skill-at-arms competition and a lance and shield full-contact jousting tournament. Competitors can enter one or both, but we prefer that jousters enter both. Overseas Visitors If you are coming from Australia you need to be recommended by the Ordre of the Blak Prynz and you can fly directly to Wellington International Airport. If you are coming from elsewhere then you need to fly into Auckland International Airport and then connect with a domestic flight through to Wellington. Overseas visitors will be met at Wellington International Airport by Order of the Boar members. We can billet visitors, or if you prefer other accommodation we can arrange hostel accommodation 2 kms from our training site or motel units 2.5kms from our training site. We are currently negotiating either free or at least discounted accommodation costs at either the above units or a hotel in Upper Hutt. We will also provide lunch and dinner at the practice sessions leading up to the tournament, during it, as well as the day after.

Issue #4 of Knight Life
When we think of the knight in shining armor, we almost automatically think of the grand joust. It's hard not to imagine the thunderous hoofbeats and the roar of the crowd as two knights race towards each other in a test of skill and nerve. The joust grew from the chaotic melee of the tournament . As restrictions were put on this dangerous form of combat practice, an event designed to test the horsemanship and weapons skill of the individual knight evolved, and eventually became the focus of the merry spectacle of the tourney.

Report: Sox make Hank a Member
Email Link Comments (5) Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff March 2, 2008 01:08 PM Red Sox ownership has granted new Yankees boss Hank Steinbrenner membership into Red Sox Nation, Sox principal owner John Henry confirmed in an e-mail to the Boston Herald. I'm a big Hank fan," Henry wrote to the Herald. "Just to ensure he knows how cool Red Sox Nation is, [Saturday] we officially inducted him as a member of Red Sox Nation and we are sending him his membership card giving him access to an array of options including our newsletter, bumper stickers, pins, Green Monster seats and a hat personally autographed by David Ortiz." Steinbrenner drew the ire of Sox fans everywhere this week with a quote that appeared in Sunday's New York Times' Play magazine. "Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of [expletive] that is," Steinbrenner told the magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order." 5 comments so far...

I Will Joust You With My Finger, Bitch.
It's very sadly missing from the Sunday TV sports lineup, but there is a hot new sport on the horizon. It's called Finger Jousting, and it's sweeping the... okay, it's not sweeping the nation or anything else. But they do have a website . So that's step one. Here's how the sport works: Finger jousting is a sport where two consenting players square off in attempt to prod their opponent with their right index finger before the opposing player can. Each competitor must keep their right hands locked in an arm wrestling fashion and not use their legs or left (latent) arm in an offensive manner. The competitors are known as jousters and the act of touching the other person's body with the index finger is known as lancing. A player can lance anywhere except the lancing (right) arm. And if you're looking to get into an official tournament, I'm sorry, but "There are currently no upcoming events nor tournaments, because of the lack of funds and official members." Bummer.
