We currently have dojos in Anchorage, Cordova, Juneau, and the Mat-Su Valley. Kodokan Judo is a martial art form developed by Sensei Jigoro Kano with the aim of creating fine citizens through physical education. It’s is largely based on various schools of JuJitsu, and as such is an excellent form of self-defense. The defensive and offensive moves can be practiced at full speed between experienced judoka (judo players) giving it greater practical application. Judo is based on two main principles: Seiryoku Zenyo : Achieve maximum efficiency with minimum effort. Kano Shihan considered this important in all aspects of life, not only in techniques of Kodokan Judo.

Ju-Jitsu loosely translated means "science of softness" or "gentle art" and is applied to many schools of unarmed and hand-to-hand combat. The soft grappling style was intended to help unarmed soldiers to fight against armed enemies in any way possible, using the least amount of force necessary. Ju-Jitsu was the primary unarmed combat method of the Samurai. Aikido and Judo are both modern day descendents of Ju-Jitsu. Several techniques used are similar to Karate, Aikido and Judo. Ju-Jitsu emphasizes turning an attacker's own force against him or herself, putting them off balance. Ju-Jitsu also emphasizes certain grappling moves and strikes to vital areas. A Ju-Jitsu student is expected to learn how to gauge the force of an opponent's attack and use it against him, evade attacks, use leverage against an opponent and how to attack nerves and pressure points.

This site is intended to provide critical information to individual members and clubs, judoka in general and people interested in learning more about our art and sport as a whole. Shufu is a charter member of the United States Judo Federation (USJF) and is responsible for maintaining and supporting the rules and standards of international and Kodokan Judo within its area. Shufu encompasses a large part of the Mid-Atlantic States, including the DC Metro Area, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the Carolinas and Georgia. A complete listing of member clubs can be found on the Clubs page. Kodokan Judo was founded in Japan in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano. A prolific innovator, Kano based his art on what he considered to be the strengths of several different fighting systems. As a result, he developed Judo into a relatively complete self defense system consisting of grappling (throws and foot sweeps), strikes, pins, chokes and submission techniques. Despite being a total martial art system, evolution and its inclusion into the Olympics in 1964 has led many participants to focus on the grappling, pins, chokes and joint locks while de-emphasizing strikes.
