Beginner's Introduction to Kyudo
(This is a sticky post, please find current news items below)
By Motomasa Mori in News In order to improve the level of instruction we can offer to students, we have decided to hold a slightly more formalized "course" for beginners quarterly . The beginner's course will last 5 weeks, and will cover kyudo's fundamental movements (kihontai) , the eight steps of shooting (hassetsu) , as well as some kyudo history, and a chance to shoot at the close-range target (makiwara) The next course will be offered May 3 - 31, 2008. Class size is limited, so please let us know if you would like to attend via e-mail . The fee for the class will be $60 which is payable at the first class (in lieu of the regular weekly $10 fee). New students should also wear a white shirt, black pants, and white socks. All class materials, and kyudo equipment will be supplied. If you have any questions about the Introduction to Kyudo mini-course, please e-mail us at kac@kyudo.ca

    Purpose
In its most pure form, kyudo is practiced as an art and as a means of moral and spiritual development. Many archers practice kyudo as a sport, with marksmanship being paramount. However, the goal most devotees of kyudo seek is seisha seichu, "correct shooting is correct hitting". In kyudo the unique action of expansion (nobiai) that results in a natural release, is strived for. When the spirit and balance of the shooting is correct the result will be for the arrow to arrive in the target. To give oneself completely to the shooting is the spiritual goal. In this respect, many kyudo practitioners believe that competition, examination, and any opportunity that places the archer in this uncompromising situation is important, while other practitioners will avoid competitions or examinations of any kind.

ABOUT KYUDO
The Late Master Koyama Shinichiro Traditional Japanese Archery From The Meishin Kyudojo Homepage Kyudo, which literally means The Way of the Bow, is considered by many to be the purest of all the martial ways. In the past the Japanese bow was used for hunting, war, court ceremonies, games, and contests of skill. The old word for Japanese archery was kyujutsu (bow technique) which encompassed the skills and techniques of the warrior archer. Some of the ancient schools, known as ryu , survive today, along with the ancient ceremonies and games, but the days where the Japanese bow was used as a weapon are long past. Modern kyudo is practiced primarily as a method of physical, moral, and spiritual development. No one knows exactly when the term kyudo came into being but it was not until the late nineteenth century when practice centered almost exclusively around individual practice that the term gained general acceptance. The essence of modern kyudo is said to be synonymous with the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty.

It's not often that one has the opportunity to review a book that is the definitive work in its field, but I got lucky. Kyudo is one such. Hideharu Onuma Sensei was the 15th-generation headmaster of a classical archery tradition, the Heki-ryu Sekki-ha, and at the time of his death in 1990 was a hanshi kyudan (9th dan), one of the most senior teachers of modern kyudo. The DeProsperos have lived and studied kyudo and aikido in Japan for more than a dozen years, much of that time living with their teacher. Dan DeProspero is a renshi rokudan (6th dan), an authorized kyudo instructor, and his wife, Jackie, is the first non-Japanese woman to be promoted to the rank of godan (5th dan) in the art. The text of Kyudo was written by the DeProsperos, but the words and spirit are largely those of Onuma Sensei. This book is a fitting tribute to their teacher and an example of their deep devotion and thorough knowledge of kyudo in particular and the Japanese martial arts in general. The book begins with a discussion of what kyudo is and why people pursue it as a lifelong study. The art of Japanese archery is seen as a means of directly experiencing, thence understanding, truth, goodness, and beauty through shugyo, the austere training of spirit, mind and body, using the bow as a vehicle and one's Self, as the target. Chapter Two is a succinct discussion of the history and development of kyudo, beginning with the prehistoric period and continuing to the foundation of the All-Japan Kyudo Federation. The third chapter deals with the spirit of kyudo. It examines the manner in which the cognitive mind, or

Among major Japanese martial arts, the Japanese archery has been outstanding in its history and spirituality. As is well known, Japanese martial arts put much stress on their mental side along with practical usage. From that standpoint, Japanese archery may be the most sophisticated and spiritual one. The bow in history
Looking over the history of weapons in the world, the bow was the oldest weapon for mankind to hunt animals, and it was the most powerful and efficient weapon for a long time until guns were invented. In Japan, the oldest written description of the bow appears in Japanese saga called "Kojiki (The Record of Ancient Japan).

    59. Kyudo | Japanese Traditional Archery

    Kyudo
Standing Zen , Japan's Most Ancient Martial Art
O f the many martial traditions that span the globe, one of the most ancient and refined is the practice of kyudo , or traditional Japanese Archery. Since traditional times, the bow has been an integral part of the Japanese spirit, having been used originally as a hunting tool and in later times as a weapon of war. However, beyond these functions the bow has always been a symbol of respect for the Japanese people, playing a spiritual and aesthetic role that captivated the imagination of the Japanese people.
A primary component differentiating kyudo from Western archery is its emphasis on self-development as an art form. Both psychological and spiritual aspects are of more importance than the physical act of shooting. As kyudo has evolved, so has its ethical influences - incorporating aspects from schools of thought within Bushido, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Shin (Truth)
