Jump to: navigation search Diagram of a luge and rider A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine and feet-first. Steering is done by flexing the sled's runners with the calf of each leg or exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Luge is also the name of the sport which involves racing with such sleds. It is a competition in which these sleds race against the clock.

Luge, like the skeleton , and the bobsled , originated in the health-spa town of St Moritz Switzerland , in the mid-to-late nineteenth century , through the endeavours of hotel entrepreneur Caspar Badrutt . Badrutt successfully sold the idea of winter resorting, as well as rooms with food, drink, and activities. His more adventurous English guests began adapting delivery boys' sleds for recreation, which led to collisions with pedestrians as they sped down the lanes and alleys of the village. This had two outcomes: in the short term the guests began to devise methods of steering the sleds, and so invented the skeleton (head first

There are those of us who get a little nervous moving at 90 miles per hour protected by steel air bags and anti-lock brakes . And then there are those of us who ask, "Can we remove all protective mechanisms, get close enough to kiss the pavement and lie down so we can't see real well?" Replace "pavement" with "ice," and you've got yourself the makings of a luge team. Luge is one of the most dangerous sports in the Olympic games, and the athletes who race down an icy, high-banked track at up to 90 mph (140 km/h) are a special breed. In this article, we'll learn all about Olympic luge and find out what it takes to finish first.

DISCUSSION The Olympic luge event was introduced in 1964 at Innsbruck-Igis, Austria. The word luge is French for "racing sled." Lugers careen down the course feet first while lying on their backs. The luge sled was originally controlled by a hand-held strap which guided the front of the runner. Now luges are steered by the lugers exerting pressure on the sides of the car with their feet and shoulders. Sliders have limited visibility because of their body position combined with speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. Hairpin turns in the course and rules requiring one of the four runs to be run at night make this event one of the most dangerous in the Olympics. It is so dangerous, in fact, that in 1964 a Polish-born British slider named Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski was killed in a luge accident, and later, two other German lugers were severely injured. Several physical forces are demonstrated by a luge event. One is

A commercial fiberglass sled can run you about $1,600. Add $200 for a tube of diamond paste to sand the steel blades. But don't even think about heating your blades; prerace, the judges will compare the metal's temperature to that of the outside air.
    Start outright
You win or lose at the top of the hill. To go from to 60 in less than 20 seconds, sit up straight on the sled and grab the handles on either side of the track. Rock the luge forward, slide it back with your hips, then pull hard with your arms to explode out of the gate. Paddle against the ice three or four times, then lean back flat with your head as low as possible and your toes pointed down the track.
