Welcome to the Leisure Luge Website! The Leisure Luge is a sponteneous event based on the idea of putting an armchair onto a skateboard and going for a joyride. The idea is to get teams of two or more together, and luge through Richmond, Indiana competing for prizes in five categories. Those five categories are moxie, speed, skill, theme and cumbersomeness. Photos by Chris Dilts July 1st, 1999 : BBC Radio 5 (London) did a live interview with me regarding the Leisure Luge. You can hear the interview and see photos from that event. The first Leisure Luge happened on March 8th, 1999 , at Glen Miller Park in Richmond, Indiana. The official story and photos were located at charged.com, an extreme leisure magazine that published the story and photos before they went dot boom. You can still see story I wrote and the photos Chris Dilts took. The rest of this site is stuck in the pre-luge era. There is no entry fee, but we do have a few rules. Rules Teams must have a least two people. There is no upper limit (but all ya'll gots to split any booty you win, if that's a concern. ) Your Leisure Luge-mobile must roll on at least one skateboard, and must involve something for somebody to sit in. (Often with recliners and other armchairs, no fasteners are needed.)

Luge is one of the fastest sports on ice. We’re always looking to improve our race time. We started thinking more about how to improve when we visited the New York Hall of Science. They have a pair of slides at their outdoor Playground Science exhibit. Going down the slides made us wonder: Can we improve our start times by paddling more with our hands? We train at Lake Placid, where the 1980 Winter Olympics were held. We recorded our start times for several kinds of start, including no paddling, paddling once, paddling twice, and paddling five times. We did at least three trials for each kind of start, and calculated our average time. Our slowest starts happened when we didn’t paddle at all. Our starts improved when we added one or tow paddles. When we tried five paddles, we found we actually slowed ourselves down! Paddling three or four times seems to be the best.

History Did you know that Vikings were the first to create luge sleds? They made them to slide down mountainsides in Olsofjord. They raced as early as 800 AD! The sleds were not aerodynamic, but they were made heavy and strong for speed. The first international luge race was in 1883. Seven nations participated including the United States. By the turn of the century, luge was governed by the International Bobsled Federation, and in 1953 the sport had its own governing body, Federation Internationale de Luge de Course. Finally, in 1964, luge became an Olympic sport at the games in Innsbruck, Austria. Sport Luge takes place on a track called "spiral." The athletes fly down a chute lying on their backs on open sleds, feet first. They race down the ice covered course at very high speeds around curves steering with their calves. The sport of luge is started by an announcement to clear the track of coaches, athletes, and equipment. They start from a stationary position at the fire of a gunshot. The athletes have on gloves with small spikes in the palms to push themselves off the starting line. The luge sleds holding one or two athlete’s head down the track one at a time, being timed too.
