We will see the 8th anniversary of this great meditative run through the hills and meadows of historic Camp Roberts Army National Guard Reservation in north San Luis Obispo County along the fertile Salinas River Valley. Marathon and half marathon to begin at 8:30 AM, 6:30 for walkers, 8:45 for 5k. Starting at 750' above sea level the course goes out and back rising to 1250'; most of the climb between miles 4 and 6. It is quiet and serene with wildlife spectators, a flock of sheep, spectacular views, training and research sites, aid stations every 2 miles and porta potties every 3 miles.
So What is This About?

Everything You Know About Marathons Is Wrong
James Estrin/The New York Times A researcher reported recently that he could find no relationship between dehydration and cramping.
By GINA KOLATA Published: November 3, 2006 Most runners have heard the marathon lore: Your time will be best if the weather on race day is about 55 degrees and overcast, or even drizzly. And avoid dehydration at all costs, because it will cause your muscles to cramp and you could collapse at the finish line. Skip to next paragraph

Multiple Marathons Running More Than One 26-Miler A Year One participant in my Virtual Training posted a message after finishing The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon saying she would like to run another marathon the following springand Chicago again in the fall. "But isn't that against the rule that you should only run one marathon a year?" she worried. Well, no such "rule" exists. And if one did exist, some running rules are meant to be brokenas long as you are well-trained and know what you're doing. Several members of my V-Team doubled back after Chicago to run Marine Corps, New York, Honolulu or other fall marathons. Many were already planning spring marathons such as Flying Pig, Rock 'n' Roll and Grandma's. A high percentage of runners qualified at Chicago for the Boston Marathon and added that grand oldie to their list of 26-milers. Runner's World lists 300 marathons on its race calendar, 50 of them international. Run only one marathon a year and you do limit your horizons. "I don't want to limit myself to one a year," states Amanda Musacchio of Villa Park, Illinois, "and I also don't want to miss Chicago." A Boston qualifier, she ran the Marine Corps Marathon three weeks after Chicago last year.

A B C ... XYZ "Black" Dance Marathons ( continuous motion ) or "Derbies" can be traced back to 1364 in London and became extremely popular during the depression years (1920s-30s) as many out of work people would compete for money prizes, as well as stars of some kind seeking publicity, or, basically anyone could enter these pagents of fatigue and endurance. Most of the music that was played was slow, but once or twice an hour they would pick up the beat ( called Sprints ) and they were required to dance the dance of the music, sometimes for extra cash or prizes. The general rule was you could not fall asleep, while some contests allowed one part of the team to sleep so long as the other held them up, kept in contact and / or kept moving. As time in the contest continued, resting times would go from the 1st week - half hour, 2nd week to fifteen minutes, then ten minutes, then five minutes, then three minutes to none, while some marathons would be danced sixty minutes then rest for fifteen. There were many variations, but you get the idea.
The marathon consisted of a emcee, a Band and or phonograph player, a Nurses, inhouse Doctor, a few cots, a dance floor, Contestants, Barbers, >Manicurists and Podiatrists, etcetera. Some contestants were professional dancer/actors. Not all entrants were there to win, some were placed (

Punishing Race Is an Enticing Lost Cause
By Eli Saslow WARTBURG, Tenn. Alone, running and hiking in the mountains for almost 50 hours, Brian Robinson's mind had slowly unraveled. He had run through two sleepless nights, through fog and sideways rain, through thornbushes and over rattlesnake dens. Now, with 80 miles finished and 20 left in the world's toughest footrace, Robinson no longer could differentiate between real and imaginary. Around each corner, he thought he heard picnickers laughing at him. At midnight. In the remote woodlands of Tennessee. Robinson stumbled into the Barkley Marathons' final aid station at 8 a.m., with black hollows surrounding his eyes. His hands trembled, a result of the five caffeine pills he had swallowed. Dozens of scratches covered his arms and legs. His dry-fit shirt was dingy and frayed. The slightest gust of wind knocked Robinson from side to side, so he leaned against a tree. A half-dozen friends and fellow runners all of whom had quit long ago rushed to prepare Robinson for the final section of the race. Two people changed his shoes. One person sponged his forehead. His friend, Wendell Doman, started cooking six eggs as Robinson eyed his watch.

Well, Las Vegas Marathon was a great experience. The weather was perfect, no wind and quite cool. I finished in 2:49:11, and I am quite content with that time after all. I ran with my friend David Ball for most of the race, and we were on pace for 2:45 - 2:46, but then on the last 2-3 miles, we both got spaghetti-legs, and we could only shuffle-run from there on. Oh well, we'll train harder next time.
My wife Denise and her friend ran dressed up as Elvis. It was a blast!

IT WAS HIS 30TH BIRTHDAY, and he'd started with beer and moved on to tequila shots at a bar near his home in San Francisco. Now, after midnight, an attractive young woman – not his wife – was hitting on him. This was not the life he'd imagined for himself. He was a corporate hack desperately running the rat race. The company had just bought him a new Lexus. He wanted to vomit. Karnazes resisted the urge and, instead, slipped out the bar's back door and walked the few blocks to his house. On the back porch, he found an old pair of sneakers. He stripped down to his T-shirt and underwear, laced up the shoes, and started running. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Why Ultramarathons are Easier Than Marathons
I'm sure there are business parallels in the idea that ultramarathons (runs of as much as 50-100 miles) are easier on you than mere marathons, but it's just plain interesting in itself: I've heard people say ultras are easier on your body than marathons. How could that be?
From the intensity standpoint, it's easier. You're going at a moderate rate over a longer period of time. You're stopping at aid stations, you're getting something to eat, refilling your water bottle. In marathons, you go, say, three and a half hours at the exact same pace over pavement. Most ultra courses have a variety of terrain, so you're using different muscles. Even the outlook is different: I'm going to walk for 30 minutes, then I'm going to run downhill for 40 minutes. That's completely different from I've got an hour and 15 minutes of First Avenue ahead of me.
