Top 26 Marathons in North America
There's a Marathon for Every Taste.
These Races Are the Best of the Best.
Participation in marathon running in North America has grown approximately 10 percent per year for the past five years. The steady increase has had a profound effect on existing marathons, swelling the entry list of some formerly modest races to the point where they must, like megamarathons, set entry limits. The Rosetta stone of the current growth in marathoning was the 1996 "100th" running of the Boston Marathon, which created a qualifying frenzy that affected hundreds of other marathons. When Runner's World magazine declared the St. George Marathon in Utah as one of the best races in which to get a qualifying time for Boston, the organizers were thrown into a spin by the torrent of entries. The huge marathons continue to grow, turning away thousands of supplicants. The mid-sized marathons grow steadily. Small marathons quickly grow to mid-sized marathons, occasionally outstripping the organizers' (and the courses') abilities to accommodate the new runners. On the fringe there are other marathons, remote and unheralded, that manage in the midst of what appears to many to be madness to hold their own and maintain the unique style and substance they've exhibited for years, sometimes for decades.

HBO2 has organized nightly four-episode marathons kicking off tonight. Each night starting at 10 p.m. the channel focuses on the story of a different patient. If you want to watch the episodes another way, HBO Signature will start with five-episode marathons every Sunday at 9 p.m. starting Feb. 24 with all five “week one” episodes. The next Sunday brings “week two” and so on. There are nine weeks in all. 10 p.m. Monday-Friday. HBO2.

Marathons Cut Risk Of Fatal Vehicle Crashes
ScienceDaily (Dec. 26, 2007) See also: Millions of people take part in organised sporting events on a regular basis, yet the outcome for a few participants is sudden death. These deaths attract widespread media attention, such as the high publicity given to deaths that occur in marathon runners. In contrast, sudden deaths from motor vehicle crashes occur more than a hundred times each day in the United States alone and tend to be under-reported in the media. Yet no previous study has explored the extent to which marathons might actually decrease mortality. So researchers examined marathons throughout the US to test whether the total number of sudden deaths changed when roads were closed to traffic and opened to marathon running. They randomly selected 26 established marathons involving more than 3 million participants over a period of 30 years. Each marathon had at least 1,000 participants and took place on United States roadways from 1975 to 2004. Sudden cardiac deaths following each marathon were recorded and compared to motor vehicle deaths during the same hours one week before and one week after each marathon. The same comparisons were then replicated for state counties that were outside the marathon route to check for spillover in traffic flow.

Procrastination and nocturnal marathons during midterm week
      By Ben Chen
Columnist Published: Thursday, March 13th, 2008 Alas, here we are at one of the toughest weeks of the semester, when students catch up on reading and prepare study guides. Frist is somehow lively yet muted with the larger number of irate, exhausted students. Campus walkways and dining halls become quieter. It is at this halfway point we find out how well we are at testing our physical limits by engaging with textbooks with little to no sleep and experimenting with caffeinated beverages and sponging back the knowledge we forgot to absorb a few weeks ago. A midterm reading period sounds good around now, giving us a breather of a few days to prepare for midterms. The real question I ask, though, is how much knowledge do we really get a chance to absorb? Our professors are great at teaching and most of the lectures are - maybe - riveting, but one of our academic problems is that our semester is shorter than most other colleges'. Our schedule is 12 weeks long, while most other schools under the semester schedule receive 15 weeks of instruction per semester, not including finals. With reading period and finals, we barely total 15. I read the transcript of a speech given by a professor here who had to give up three weeks of instruction when he transferred from MIT. Would he take out three weeks of material, or teach 25 percent faster? We pay roughly the same amount in tuition to attend any of these top-tier schools, why should we be learning any less? The quality or quantity of our education should not be cut.

Many team training camps are located in other countries and "the British Olympic Association commissioned scientists to develop a high-tech breathing mask for its athletes to wear while competing. U.S. Olympic officials say their athletes will not wear masks in competition but might at other times during their stay in Beijing," according to a story in the Los Angeles Times.

    Wii Warm Up: Gaming marathons
Posted Jan 13th 2008 10:30AM by Chris Greenhough
    Filed under: Wii Warm Up
Gaming endurance seems to be a bit of a theme this week. First, there was the story of Bill Tangeman, who racked up a quite unearthly score by playing a single round of Geometry Wars: Galaxies on his DS for 24 hours. Then, and perhaps more impressively still, we heard about these guys , who are trying to complete four Zelda games in 48 hours for charity and pizza. As we type, they're speeding through The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
You pretty much know where this is going, then: we'd like to hear about your own marathon gaming sessions. It'd be nice if these were on the Wii, but we're also happy for you to tell us about that time you spent thirteen straight hours playing the first Halo in a friend's attic. Wait, no ... that was
