    edit History
Netball traces its roots to basketball . Basketball was devised in 1891 by James Naismith for his students in the School for Christian Workers (later called the YMCA ). Female teachers got curious and started to formulate a version for girls. The outfits of women at this time hindered them from effectively executing important basketball moves such as running and dribbling, so the game had to be modified to accommodate these restrictions. Women’s basketball, or ‘netball,’ was thus born. Netball was first played in England in 1895 at Madame Ostenburg's College and soon spread throughout Australia , the then- British colonies of Jamaica and Antigua , and indeed most British Commonwealth territories. It did not yet have hard-and-fast rules. So loose were the regulations, in fact, that some games were played by nine players in each team, while some were played with only five players in each. The nets used were also ineffective – they were not open at both ends, so after each goal was scored, the umpire had to retrieve the ball from the top of the post.

Polo Crosse Do you need help finding information? There are seven players on each team and the aim of the game is to get the ball in the opposing goal hoop as many times as possible throughout a 60 minute match. The netball court is 100 ft long by 50 ft wide, approximately the size of a tennis court. The court is split by two lines that divide the court into thirds. At both ends of the court there is a shooting semicircle and a ten ft goal post with no back board. Each team member has a specific position that is restricted to an area on the court. These restricted areas have an attacking and defending player in them, each from an opposing team. From Nevis Netball Read on

Netball action at the Special Olympics Great Britain's 2005 National Summer Games. Special Olympics Great Britain athlete Paula Sage was as excited by the news that she and her fellow netball team members had qualified for those Games as she was celebrating her starring role in the movie AfterLife at its London premiere on Wednesday, 11 August 2004. Sage's team placed second at the Games. "I love my netball," she said. "I would have liked the gold, although silver is good too. It was awesome." [Photo courtesy Special Olympics Great Britain] Netball is a fast, skillful team game based on running, jumping, throwing and catching. It evolved as a result of a misinterpretation of the rules of basketball. Netball teams may include up to 12 players, but only seven may take the court at any one time. Each player has a playing position determined by the areas on the court where they may move. The playing positions are shown by identification letters worn above the waist, on both the front and the back of the player. The object of the game is to score as many goals as possible from within an area called the Goal Circle; only two players from each team, the Goal Attack and Goal Shooter, may score goals. The game is a popular participatory and spectator sport in many British Commonwealth countries.

The San Francisco Stars, formed in August 2000 by a group of ex-pats with a shared love of netball, is the first and only netball club in Northern California. On these pages you can find out more about our members, our training sessions, and the game of netball. The club welcomes adult players of all abilities and trains every Saturday from March to June and August to October. To keep things interesting, training incorporates a variety of different elements, including friendly game days where we play short games among ourselves, fitness, ball drills and practice games, and a full one hour competitive game once a month. For those interested in playing at a more serious level, the club also fields a team in the Pacific Coast Netball League, a competitive league featuring teams from up and down the west coast, from San Diego all the way north to Toronto, and participates in several tournaments throughout the year hosted by other netball clubs in the United States and Canada. Socializing is an integral part of our club. To this end, we have regular organized but informal social events such as drinks, movie outings and nights, and game nights. Friends, family and folks who are interested in learning about the sport are encouraged to attend and are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the club or would simply like more information, please contact us at

Origins of the Great Girlie Game
Netball derived from basketball and in fact it used to be called women's basketball when I was a pup. Apparently it resulted from some confusion when the rules of the new game of basketball was imported into Britain in the late . It was then developed as a more lady-like version suitable for English school girls via strict non-contact rules and limitations on the amount of movement around the court. This therefore minimised the exertion the 'gels' were exposed to and also of course minimised their perspiration...er I mean their "glow". Things have changed a little since then. Although players are still only allowed to take one step with the ball and the court limitations on each position remain, the game is now high paced, extremely energetic and, judging by the amount of times I fall down on court, far from lady-like! Its a great game and is now apparently the number 2 participant sport in Australia (after golf). Its the number one women's sport in the world and now even the guys are getting into the act.
    The Basics
As you can see, netball is played with seven players on each team on a court that is divided into three sections, plus two goal circles and a centre circle.

Welcome to the San Diego United Netball Club! San Diego United Netball club was founded in April 2003 and our mission is to promote the game of netball in San Diego County, Orange County and Palm Springs. We provide a fun club atmosphere where people of different nationalities can get together to improve their playing skills while making new friends. Our club invites new players of all abilities with the aim to eventually creating a San Diego league. It is one of the rare sports where mixed ability players can play on the same team and everyone still have lots of fun. Our current team has players that have not played before, others who haven't played since school, and those that are at the International player level. In San Diego, netball is traditionally played by ex-patriot players from netball playing countries and we have players on our team from South Africa, Sri Lanka, Jamaica as well as British, Australian and New Zealand team players. ( Check out our bio's ). We are proud to have our first American player and welcome more native U.S. players to our squad. We aim to build our club to the point where we can demonstrate and promote netball in schools which we believe it is a great way for kids to keep fit and learn team cooperation and discipline.

    Triangle drill
Requirements: 4 players, one ball Place 3 players in a triangle 3-4m apart, one with the ball (thrower). 4th player (defender) stands opposite thrower, between and a little in front of the other two players (receivers). Thrower then makes chest pass to either receiver, defender must try to intercept. After five clean interceptions, players rotate. Coaching points:
    • Adjust distances according to skill/size of defender to ensure defender has a realistic chance to intercept the ball. Ensure good fast chest passes only, no overheads. Defender should react to ball, not thrower's eyes
