Netball coaching: basic training drills
In order to maximize the potential of your netball team, practicing often and well are critical. The following is a list of drills your players can perform that will help them improve their skills and prepare them for game situations.
Before your netball team begins any sort of practice drills, the players should warm up with about 10 minutes of stretching exercises. Stretching will prevent muscle pulls and strains. When they have commenced stretching, the players can also engage in some light warm up activities. Five to ten minutes of light sprints up and down the floor are all that’s necessary. (Note: coaches may want to intersperse stretching between cardio sprints as some experts believe combining the two exercises is more effective preparation.) After 10 minutes, divide players into pairs and have them work on handling the ball as they sprint. Work on ball handling for five minutes. At the end of the warm-up session, have the players rest for another five to ten minutes and then move to practice drills. In the sport of netball, there are six basic areas your players will want to focus upon in order to improve their skills. These areas include: catching, passing, footwork, shooting, attacking, and defending. The first set of drills will focus on catching. These drills will concentrate on both the two-handed and one-handed catches. Remember to tell your players to watch the ball all the way into their hands, and to try and catch the ball with their fingers.

Unilateral lower limb musculoskeletal injury: Its long term effect on balance Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Volume 81, Issue 3 March 2000 Pages 265-268 Heather M. Holder-Powell and Olga M. Rutherford Abstract Objective: To assess if any long-term decrements in balance occur after unilateral musculoskeletal injury. The relation between the size of decrement and the dominance, the type, and the time since injury were also considered. Design: With eyes open and closed, postural sway in one-legged standing was recorded for 10 seconds in 48 subjects who sustained a unilateral musculoskeletal injury 6 months to 42 years earlier. Comparative data were also collected in 108 healthy subjects with no previous injury.

History
Like korfball , netball grew out of an early version of women's basketball, which in turn grew out of a misunderstanding. Not long after James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, Clara Baer of H. Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans wrote to Naismith asking for a copy of the rules. The reply included a diagram of the court across which Naismith had drawn two lines to indicate which areas players could cover. Baer misinterpreted them as restraining lines designating areas in which those players had to remain throughout the game. Based on that misinterpretation and her own ideas of what was athletically suitable for women, Baer created a new version of basketball. Under the rules, as published in 1895, the floor was divided into three zones and each player had to remain in a certain zone; stealing the ball, "overguarding" an opponent, and moving with the ball were forbidden; and the player with the ball was allowed to hold it for only three seconds. This sport was brought to England in 1895 by a Dr. Toles (or Toll, in some reports), who was working with student teachers at Martina Bergman Osterberg's Physical Training College in Dartford.

Curtin University of Technology, School of Physiotherapy. In assessing the foot types and lower limb injuries of elite netball players, the following summary seems warranted. Ninety percent of elite female netball players had symmetrical foot types for both feet and these players had experienced at least one lower limb injury. Only 7.6% players (N = 16) of the 204 players surveyed had never sustained a lower limb injury during their netball careers. Regardless of foot type, the injury
