The traditional form (sometimes referred to as "Foot Orienteering" or "Foot-O") involves cross-country running , though other forms have evolved. The competition is a timed race in which individual participants use a special purpose map and a magnetic compass to navigate through diverse terrain (often wooded) and visit, in sequence, control points that are indicated on the map. The course of control points is kept secret from the competitors, until the start, when they are provided with a detailed topographic map on which the course is marked. Competitors start at staggered intervals, are individually timed , and are expected to perform all navigation skills on their own. Standings are determined first by successful completion of the course, then by shortest time on course. Rules and principles of the sport are defined by the International Orienteering Federation The English name derives from the Swedish word "orientering". The term was first used to describe the sport in 1918 by Major Ernst Killander, then President of the Stockholm Amateur Athletic Association, in publicity for the first large scale competitive meet held in

Like most pages on the Web, this is heavily under construction. I'm completely overhauling my pages and I really wanted to get the new versions up, though it'll be a while before I get everything in place. This page is by no means a comprehensive list of O-sites, since (a) there are so many of them and (b) I'm sure other people have much better lists already. Instead, my aim is to provide a number of useful starting points for people new to the sport or looking for a club. Informational links have been limited to those in English (though there is a wealth in other languages as well), and the club links focus on those in the Northeast and Northwest US, though there are several starting points for other locations in the US and around the world. The basic goal of orienteering is to locate various preset locations (controls), armed with only a map and compass. There are countless variations on the exact logistics of a meet, since clubs may come up with their own rules the give a local meet a new twist. What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which orienteers use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find points in the landscape. It can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods or as a competitive sport. A standard orienteering course consists of a start , a series of control sites that are marked by circles, connected by lines and numbered in the order they are to be visited, and a finish . The control site circles are centered around the feature that is to be found; this feature is also defined by control descriptions (sometimes called clues ). On the ground, a control flag marks the location that the orienteer must visit. To verify a visit, the orienteer uses a punch hanging next to the flag to mark his or her control card . Different punches make different patterns of holes in the paper. The route between "controls" (refers to the flag or the site) is not specified, and is entirely up to the orienteer; this element of route choice and the ability to navigate through the forest are the essence of orienteering. Most orienteering events use staggered starts to ensure that each orienteer has a chance to do his or her own navigating, but there are several other popular formats, including relays and events in which the orienteer must find as many controls as possible within a specified time.

    Orienteering: The Thinking Sport
A mental and physical sport of Scandinavian origin, orienteering is a foot race, a puzzle-solving thought race, a cross country running sport, and a fun recreational activity. Orienteering is for men, women, and children of all ages and abilities. All you need is a love for the great outdoors! The objective is to locate orange markers (called controls) in the woods using a special, highly detailed topographic map; participants navigate their way to a series of controls before crossing the finish line. Courses vary in difficulty and length - beginner courses are typically 1-2km long with navigation entirely or almost entirely on established trails, while the most advanced courses are 6-10km long and require extensive cross-country navigation. Participants can travel alone or in groups, running, walking, or leisurely strolling the course. The sport can be enjoyed as a healthy form of family recreation, or as a highly competitive race involving navigational skill, speed, and physical stamina.
