- The event is still on for April 5 (status as of 4PM 04/03/2008).
Trail conditions have improved considerably. The trails are still a little muddy and there are pockets of standing water. We highly recommend that people bring bug spray and wear pants and hiking boots. The thorns are out and so is the poison ivy.

A nonprofit organization offering information on the objectives of the sport, membership, ride calendar, ride results, chatroom, newsletters, and links.
    http://www.nacmo.org/
Competitive Mounted Orienteering (CMO) is one of the most challenging and exciting equestrian sports - for the competitive as well as family horse rider! CMO is like a mounted treasure hunt, which tests your horsemanship, your map reading ability, and your compass skills - all while having great fun with your horse! A CMO rider taking a compass bearing from a clue - A LARGE ROCK ON A STUMP. CMO stresses sound horsemanship, and we like to call it "The Thinking Horse Sport"! The object of the sport is to ride out as an individual or a team on a prescribed course and find as many of the hidden Objective Stations as you can and get back in the least amount of time, on either a ten station long or 5 station short course.
The long course can be anywhere from a around 8 to as long as 25 miles. The terrain depends on the ride manager's choice of area - but CMO rides are held all over the country from the high forests of Washington State to the rolling hills of Indiana!
The short course is much smaller, and is oriented towards families, riders wishing a less competitive event, training of new horses, and new riders looking to check out the CMO fun. Click here for a complete introduction All riders are welcome. To check out a ride schedule in your area

    Main
outdoor competitive sport that is similar to cross-country running, but with emphasis on map-reading and direction-finding skills. Through woods and over hills or rough plains, contestants plot courses between isolated control points that must usually be visited in sequence. Introduced in Sweden in 1918, orienteering had its first success in Scandinavia but later spread throughout Europe, culminating in the establishment of an International Orienteering Federation in 1961, with European championships held from 1962 and world championships from 1966. National orienteering federations were established in Canada in 1968 and in the United States in 1971. The sport has numerous enthusiasts in North America, where approximately 100 local orienteering clubs and associations sponsor between them more than 600 total days of competitions annually. In orienteering, competitors study a master map of the course at the common starting point, and may copy control positions on individual maps; they also study a list and description of the controls. Maps used are of a 1:15,000 scale, with 5-m (16.4-ft) contour intervals, though other scales and vertical intervals may be allowed in certain competitions. Selecting their routes according to terrain, competitors must choose between more direct courses with obstacles such as water, marshes, woods, and hills, and more circuitous routes with easier passage. Runners set out from the starting point at intervals of one to five minutes, using map and compass to locate, check in, and stamp or punch their cards at controls indicated by orange and white marking flags, which may be from a few hundred yards to a mile apart. The winner is the runner who completes the course in the fastest time.
