Last updated: March 30, 2008 Welcome to the Vulcan Orienteering Club (VOC) Orienteering - The thinking sport I came, I saw, I thought, I ran The VOC hosts orienteering meets primarily at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL (just south of Birmingham, I-65 exit 246). We have a large portion of the 9,000 acre park mapped with enough detail for orienteering. This allows us to start in several different locations throughout the park to keep you from getting too acquainted with any one section of the park. The VOC orienteering season runs from September through May each year. We typically host one meet each month (usually on the 3rd Saturday). All events are open to everyone and offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses, as well as free beginner instruction. There is a nominal fee of $5 per map. (small groups may go out using a single map. Additional fee if electronic punching is used). Our orienteering meets are very informal and are primarily used to introduce people to the sport of orienteering and as practice for national USOF orienteering meets. You may enjoy it as a casual walk through the woods or a competitive run. To find out about the next VOC event, please check the

The Challenge of Orienteering
Welcome to the confounding and addictive world of competitive orienteering By Dougald MacDonald - November 28th, 2007 Find More: Bingo!
After 10 minutes of thrashing through the pucker brush around a small granite outcrop, I’ve suddenly spotted the well-hidden Control No. 7. This orange and white nylon box, about the size of a 12-pack, is the seventh checkpoint on my course at a local orienteering meet.
I dash over to the control and find the hole-punch that’s dangling from a short string. Marking my scorecard with this unique punch will prove I’ve been to No. 7. Then I check my map for Control No. 8, about a quarter-mile to the south. Suddenly another racer comes crashing through the brush. I scurry off into the woods.
Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten to check my compass, and after about a hundred yards I realize the sun is at my back. Wasn’t I supposed to be heading south? In my haste to shake my competitor, I’ve made a rookie error and run 180 degrees in the wrong direction.
