An Army service technician who entered the military a few years after high school, Winkler, 34, took a two-year hiatus in the late '90s, only to realize he belonged in the military. But in 2003, Winkler fell off an ammo truck in Tikrit, injuring his spinal cord.

The camp, launched by disabled Gulf War veteran John Register in 2005, is designed to help veterans like Winkler develop and hone new athletic skills through a series of intensive clinics. "We have 24 sports on the menu that can be offered," Register says. "On the battlefield, you strive for excellence, and there are a few here that continue to do that." U.S. Paralympics national team coaches and athletes train the veterans for events like archery, sailing and volleyball, and organize competitions for participants at the end of the program, which is funded by the United States Olympic Committee.

The Paralympic Games have grown tremendously since then, with 3,806 athletes from 136 countries competing at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. While Paralympians comprise athletes from six different disability groups, the Paralympic Games emphasize athletic achievement, rather than disability. Athletes compete in sports that test their strength, speed, skill and athleticism in events that are both identical to the Olympic disciplines as well as completely unique to the Paralympics. Chicago would provide the perfect setting for the 2016 Paralympic Games, providing these athletes with state-of-the-art facilities, enthusiastic support and a wholehearted welcome into our beautiful city. Archery History
The Stoke Mandeville Hospital was the first to host an archery competition for persons with a disability in 1948, although at first with only the purpose of rehabilitation and leisure. Archery grew rapidly and became one of the first sports played in the original Paralympic Games held in 1960. Now, athletes from 37 counties compete in this sport.

    • E-mail Share There's just something about the water in Baltimore. Maybe you knew that already, but it's worth repeating. The water here, it enables you to do almost anything. Michael Phelps sprang from these waters. Katie Hoff, too. But the swimming story I hope we'll all be able to appreciate this summer is Philip Scholz's quest to represent the United States in the Paralympics.
Scholz is a freshman at Loyola College . Before I even tell you about what he's able to do in the water, you've got to understand what he has already been through.
Born in Munich, Germany, Scholz moved with his family to Long Island, N.Y., when he was 7. He has been diagnosed with Stickler syndrome, a genetic condition that affects connective tissue, and has endured nearly two dozen surgeries since birth. We're talking everything from his cleft palate to his colon to his ears to his eyes. When he was 6, he lost sight in his left eye. By 15, he lost sight in his right. And at 18, he was sitting across from me at Loyola's Fitness and Aquatic Center last week telling me about how he hopes to compete at the Beijing Paralympics this summer.
"Out on land, if people suddenly feel like running, they can run and not worry too much about things that they see coming. I can't do that, because I can't see that car coming and avoid it," says Scholz, who gets around campus with the aid of Taxi, his 2 1/2 -year-old Labrador retriever. "In the pool, I know where everything is, I can go at my pace, I can go fast. ... I know when the wall is there."
