25 things you never knew about the Paralympics
. The Paralympic Games originated at Stoke Mandeville hospital, in Aylesbury, England, conceived by Dr. Ludwig Guttmann , who originally planned them as part of a rehabilitation programme for people with spinal injuries and to help young disabled war veterans find activity and gain self-esteem. The 'Games for the Paralysed' were first held in 1948 to coincide with the London Olympics. . The first official Paralympics took place in Rome in 1960. 400 athletes and staff attended from 23 countries, but only in wheelchair sports. . Blind and visually impaired sports were demonstrated for the first time in the 1972 Heidelberg Games, and became official sports four years later in Toronto along with amputee events. . The first games to include athletes with Cerebral Palsy came in 1984. They were shared between New York and Stoke Mandeville, England. . Since the 1988 Seoul Games, the Paralympics have constantly been held in the same venues as the Olympics. In 2001, a decision was made to officialy have the Olympics and Paralympics in the same venues. Cities now have to bid for the Olympics and Paralympics as a single package.

The same week that the Paralympic logo was unveiled, the announcement was made that some of the Paralympic sports will be located in Vancouver. Ironically, the 2010 "Vancouver" Paralympic Games were originally to be held entirely in Whistler, BC. I hope the logo turns into a flag. A large IPC (International Paralympic Committee) flag flies next to, and equally prominent with, the Olympic flag at Vancouver City Hall. The flag-raising was attended by His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward).

Paralympics were in Sydney, Australia in October 18. Find out what types of sports these athletes are competing in and the history of this specialized olympics.
Some of the 4,000 athletes from 125 countries who participated were in wheelchairs, some had cerebral palsy, some had visual handicaps and some had mental handicaps. On October 4, three days after the Olympics ended in Sydney, Australia, the torch relay which led up to the Paralympics began in the same city. The torch went to every capital city in the country. On October 18 a cauldron in Sydney was lit and the city's "other Olympics" began. The Paralympics is not only the premier athletic even in the world for the disabled, but also the second largest sporting event in the world, second only to the Olympics. Between the Olympics and the Paralympics Australia had major athletic competions for 50 straight days. There were 18 events in the Paralympics. As far as size comparison for participation, the 2,000 Sydney Paralympics was about equal to the 1956 Melborne Olympics and twice the size of the 1988 Nagano Winter Olympics.

ON-LINE BUYERS GUIDE by William Bishop Athletes are making history in the world of sports for persons with a disability and Canada is among the top nations involved. In 1973, Eugene Reimer, (a paraplegic wheelchair athlete who won a number of world records) became Sport Canada's Male Athlete of the Year for 1972, an honour no other nation has ever bestowed on a disabled athlete. Three years later, in 1975, the first tri-disability competitions were held in Edmonton, Alberta. They included the annual Wheelchair, Blind and Amputee Games. In 1983, athlete Rick Hansen was honoured with the first Lou Marsh Special Award of Merit, (given to Canada's most outstanding athlete) for winning nine gold medals at the Pan American Wheelchair Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation established the Dr. Robert Jackson Award for Ontario's Disabled Athlete of the Year in 1986. St. Catharines's Joanne Bouw, a cerebral palsy athlete was the first recipient, recognized for her accomplishments as a field event World Champion. Sports for disabled athletes did not always have a high profile. Over the years they have gone through many changes, survived many obstacles. The earliest record of Sport for the Physically Disabled dates back to World War I when it was initiated as a form of treatment, especially among the blind and amputees servicemen. But the interest and enthusiasm among the disabled was not long lasting. Prior to 1940, medicine was able to do little for disabled persons, especially those who suffered spinal injuries. The majority of the spinal injured died a short time after their accidents from ensuing complications and sometimes from the loss of the will to live.

High-performance sports is an area where a transhumanized version of ableism is highly visible (see e.g. article by Andy Miah The International Convention against Doping in Sports (which entered into force on February 1, 2007), the World Anti Doping Code , and the Anti Doping Code of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) give some guidance as to what is now seen as legal and illegal. They also indicate when an illegal action can be legal. Wojtek Czyz, running with a space-tech enhanced prosthetic leg, took the gold at the 2004 Paralympics yesterday, finishing the 100 m sprint in 12.51 seconds, a new Paralympic record, 10 hundreds of a second faster than that of Sydney 2000.
German Czyz, the world record holder for long jump, is participating in the Paralympics Games in Athens trusting in space technology and expertise to help him win. He participates in 100 m sprint, 200 m sprint and long jump. For the competitions, parts of the prosthesis he is using are made from material designed for space to make it both stronger and lighter. Czyz lost part of his left leg in a sports accident three years ago and in order to continue his passion for “everything that has to do with sport”, this meant that he had to use a prosthesis.

by Lori A. Wood This month, television audiences will hold their collective breath as their favorite Olympic hopefuls strive to fulfill their lifelong d reams at the 2004 games in Athens, Greece. Every two years, the Olympics provide a chance to experience, albeit vicariously, the thrill of struggling toward victory. Through athletes’ eyes, we see the power of human potential in its purest form. Fundamental differences that separate us as individuals in the course of everyday life— rigid distinctions of race, gender, nationality, and culture—fade away when we witness the universal excellence of Olympic competition. It is not difficult to imagine that the distinction between disabled and able-bodied might also momentarily disappear if athletes in wheelchairs were even a fraction as visible as those who compete in the Olympics.
