China is preparing to hold its first Olympic Games this year, and along with it, the Paralympics Games for disabled athletes. Chinese officials acknowledge that they are far behind in providing equal access for the country's disabled citizens, and they hope the games will help improve the situation. Beijing wants to host a festive Olympics this year and officials say the Paralympics should be equal in splendor. Beijing has built new facilities for the games and for training China's disabled athletes. Chinese officials say there are 83 million people with disabilities in China and two million of them play sports. Cao Qiuping hopes to play basketball for the Chinese team. She says the Paralympic Games will help reduce prejudice in China against the disabled. "A lot of people take [disabled people] to be obedient and docile. In fact, it's not like this. Their understanding is wrong. We want to use this opportunity to show them the real appearance of handicapped people." An estimated 4,000 athletes from 150 countries are expected in Beijing for the Paralympics.

The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games, and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) - (The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics, which are only for people with intellectual disabilities.) When did the Paralympic Games First start? The Paralympics first started in 1948 when Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition which involved world war 2 veterans that had spinal injuries. Afterwards a similar event was organized in Toronto, Canada where different disability groups were added and the idea of merging together and taking part in athletic sports was a success. The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. Elite athletes from around the globe competed against each other in dozens of events, shattering records and bringing home medals for 68 countries. But I missed this 12-day event, and chances are you did, too. You see, the United States doesn’t carry broadcasts of the Paralympics. Neither does Australia, which is strange considering it's the country hosting this event. The media in many countries faithfully ignore it, and sponsors stay away in droves. In 1960 the Paralympics first brought together the world's greatest disabled athletes to compete in Olympic-style events. Since the 1970 Games, all forms of disability have been incorporated, so that athletes compete in one of six categories: amputee, wheelchair, cerebral palsy, sight impairment, intellectual disability, and "les autres" (French for "the others," a catch-all category for people with other forms of disability). Within each category, athletes compete against others of similar functionality. For example, blindness is divided into three levels, and cerebral palsy is comprised of eight levels.

Scholz, who is classified as an S11 blind swimmer, set the record with a swim of 20:47.20 in the event. "Philip had a great meet this weekend competing against international competition for the first time," said Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler . "I am so proud of how he fared against other blind athletes." Overall, Scholz set American records in the 50-meter butterfly, 800-meter freestyle and 1500-meter freestyle over the three-day competition. He placed first in all three events, breaking the American record in the 800 Free by two minutes. Scholz also placed second in the 50 Free and took third in the 400 Free against some of the world's top competition. His times in all five of his placing events also give him world ranking at the S11 category.

Soldiers returning from Iraq paralyzed or missing limbs are young, fit and fiercely competitive, making them ideal athletes. Advocates for the disabled predict Iraq vets will account for 10 percent of the 500-member U.S. Paralympic team for the 2012 London Games, even though they'll make up far less than 1 percent of the total disabled population. "This newest batch of veterans will be a tremendous boost to the Paralympic sport movement,'' said Kirk Bauer, director of Rockville, Md.-based Disabled Sports USA, who lost his left leg in 1969 to a North Vietnamese hand grenade. "It has energized it, in ways we haven't seen in years.''
