Paralympics - The Olympics with a difference
Added: 12/21/2007
Athletes from six types of disability categories can participate in the Paralympics sports event. The whole idea behind such an event is not to highlight their disability, but the focus is on their athletic ability. Not only the numbers of participants have increased over the years but number of events has increased too!
This sports event has given many a disabled, a reason to live. Although this event started in the most humble way, today it has been given its due importance. It has been agreed since the Seoul Olympics that the country hosting the Olympics will be required to host the Paralympics event too! The 1960 summer Paralympics which witnessed 400 participants perform from 23 countries had 3806 contestants from 136 countries participating in Athens 2004.
One of the most interesting things is how the participants are decided in the sport events for the physically challenged. It will be justified only when participants in a certain sport having similar disabilities compete with each other. Hence, care has been taking while making these classifications. Participants with similar physical functioning or with similar physical challenge are allowed to compete against one another in a particular sporting event.

UPDATE: Paralympic athletes sue U.S. Olympic Committee for disability discrimination . July 28, 2003 Paralympians Scot Hollonbeck, of Atlanta, Georgia, Tony Iniguez, of Aurora, Illinois, and Jacob Heilveil of Bothell, Washington, said in the lawsuit that the USOC violates federal law by providing benefits - such as elite training, coaching, performance incentives and health insurance - to Olympic athletes but denies those benefits to Paralympic athletes. Bad Sports:
U.S. Olympic Committee thumbs nose at Paralympics By Josie Byzek. Sidebar: Vertical Integration Josie Byzek writes frequently about disability rights. Not a single Olympic dollar will go to Paralympic athletes for the upcoming games in 2000. That was the word from U.S. Olympic Committee Executive Director Dick Schultz at a mid-April Colorado Springs meeting of the organization's Committee on Sports for the Disabled. No sponsorships would be pursued by the USOC for the Paralympics either, said Schultz. This will leave Paralympians effectively without funding for their events. For amateur sports in America, all roads lead to the U. S. Olympic Committee. The 1978 Amateur Sports Act required the USOC to involve disabled athletes, but "it was so gray the Committee could always wiggle out of having to do anything," says five-time Paralympic medalist Scot Hollonbeck. A 1998 amendment now makes the requirement clear. Yet USOC support is "just not there for Paralympians," says the U.S. Disabled Athletes' Fund's Andy Fleming.

Paralympics Shatters Records, Raises the Bar
By Miki Fairley It was a time to break records. The 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece, saw 304 world records and 448 Paralympic records shattered. A total of 136 nations participated, breaking the previous high of 123 nations represented at the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. The total number of athletes3,969 (2,763 men and 1,206 women)also set a new record, breaking the previous record of 3,843 set in Sydney. China swept the medals race, winning a total of 141, including 63 gold, 46 silver, and 32 bronze. Australia captured second place, with 100 medals26 gold, 38 silver, and 36 bronze. Great Britain came next, winning a total of 94, with 35 gold, 30 silver, and 29 bronze. However, Great Britain ranked second in golds. The British honored both Olympic and Paralympic winners in a "Parade of Heroes" in London October 18. "This was an outstanding performance by Great Britain's Paralympians emulating their second place in Sydney with a smaller team and against the toughest competition the Paralympics has ever seen," said Phil Lane, CEO of the British Paralympic Association. "Our 35 golds and medal success in 11 different sports has been achieved by a huge effort from both the athletes and the Paralympic GB sports staff." The United States was fourth, in both number of gold medals and total number of medals, with 27 gold medals, 22 silver, and 39 bronze, for a total of 88. Germany, France, and Canada took fifth, sixth, and seventh places respectively; however, Canada ranked third in number of golds with 28.

Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the Games, and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. Olympic-style games for athletes with a disability were organised for the first time in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sports competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden.

This includes mobility disabilities, amputees visual disabilities and those with cerebral palsy . The Paralympic Games are held every four years, following the Olympic Games , and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). (The Paralympic Games are sometimes confused with the Special Olympics World Games , which are only for people with intellectual disabilities The name derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games . Reilly Boyt dives at spot in Paralympics
By Victoria Stubbs Published: Monday, February 25, 2008 7:56 AM CST Staff Writer
Reilly Boyt, 11, has never let size stop her. Although she has achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism, she is still shooting to be a Paralympic medal winner.
Boyt, who lives in Fort Collins, Colo., visits her grandparents, Gordon and Evangeline Boyt, each year in Thomaston.
At a swimming pool in Fort Collins, Boyt has been described to move around it as if it were her second home.
Since the age of 9, Boyt has been on a swimming team. Her coach has worked with other dwarves in the past and knew Boyt would be highly competitive when facing other dwarves or those with physical impairments in a swimming pool. Boyt has competed in a few national swimming competitions, and in November she officially qualified for the Paralympic trials in three events.
In April, Boyt will travel to Minnesota to compete in the Paralympic trials.
