Here comes one of the best "away events" of the competition season! Los Angeles Petanque Club puts on the San Pedro Triples event every year in the Spring, at the harborside petanque courts in downtown San Pedro, California. This event is looked forward to because the incredible atmosphere: giant cruise ships parked next door, the Catalina Helicopter Ferry landing just feet away, the sounds of cars going over the huge aerial act known as the Vincent Thomas Bridge towering above the players. Next to the petanque facility in San Pedro is the World War II cargo ship S.S. Lane Victory which is a floating museum to tour between matches. Then there's the event itself, which kicks off on Sunday morning (April 13) with the finalizing of the teams and registration. Be sure to bring your own lunch! Once play begins you realize the terrain surfaces are sometimes hilly, sometimes flat, and some players like to play on the Bocce Ball courts - sandy, but hard. All along the courts is the Harborside Walkway, which extends out into Los Angeles Harbor with its terrific views. Take a walk...it's amazing. Hosts for the San Pedro Open are the tireless Steve and Dolores Bush who spend a lot of time making arrangements with hotels, the restaurant where the banquet is held (this year at the famed 22nd Street Landing on - you guessed it - 22nd Street, again, right on the harbor. Social Petanque on a Bounded Court Introduction These pages discuss a form of Petanque becoming very popular in the United States. It may be popular elsewhere, but I speak only from experience. "Social Petanque on a Bounded Court" differs to some extent from the formal international game originated in France, with its very strict rules. "Social Petanque on a Bounded Court" retains the element of strategy found in the formal international game, but makes it fun for everyone! Petanque is a game everyone can enjoy. Strength, height and age make little difference. Teams can be formed such that they are well balanced and all can enjoy. We were first introduced to this form of Petanque at Cypress Cove Resort . This is a fantastic family-oriented resort and players of all ages and skill levels are invited to play Petanque every morning!! The most distinct characteristic of the game described here is the playing surface. It is bounded by timber, has fixed positions to throw from, and has fixed markers to speed measurement of the initial toss of the cochonnet (or jack). These elements speed play and alleviate interference problems when several games are being played at the same time. For example, Cypress Cove Resort has six courts that are often busy; traditional "open area" rules would leave this many ongoing games open to gross interference.
