The Bears won their first four games of the season, beating Ontario Christian and Aquinas in doubleheader action before losing to Barstow on March 11. What makes the start more amazing is the fact that the Bears are doing it with an almost entirely new team and a new head coach.

Howells sophomore already excels in shot put
BY RON POWELL / Lincoln Journal Star
Thursday, Apr 07, 2005 - 12:30:22 am CDT Howells sophomore Jenny Svoboda is not your typical high school shot putter.
But Svoboda already moved into fifth all-time by unleashing a throw of 48 feet, 5 inches last spring as a freshman, just ¼ inch off the national record for a freshman. Svoboda, who won the Class D title at state last spring with a put of 47-5, recorded her personal best of 49-4 in a summer meet in Geneva. The 49-4 was sixth nationally last year among high school throwers. Later, she won her age group at the nationals.
Some pretty impressive results for someone who says she enjoys running and that basketball is her favorite sport.
Svoboda had opportunities to compete in some indoor national meets this winter, but turned them down. "That time is strictly for basketball,'' said the 5-foot-9 Svoboda, an honorable mention all-stater in Class C-2 after averaging 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game and shooting 61 percent from the field this past season.

Making an impact: Chad Stoltz brings winning attitude to Waterford
By Gery Woelfel Saturday, October 28, 2006 2:16 AM CDT
WATERFORD - It was going to be a typical road trip, a chance to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle and spend quality time with a friend.
Little did Chad Stoltz realize when he traveled from his hometown of Stevens Point to southeastern Wisconsin in the summer of 1995 that it would be such a life-altering experience.
"I decided I was going to spend some time with a college buddy of mine," Stoltz said of his trip to visit Kevin Hochevar, who attended UW-Stevens Point with Stoltz. "We decided to catch a Van Halen concert at Alpine Valley. He lived close by Waterford and we went through Waterford on the way to the concert.
"I thought it was a neat city. I thought it was kind of interesting.'' Stoltz was so smitten with the friendly, small-town atmosphere of Waterford that, when a physical education-health teaching position arose at Waterford High School seven years later, he pursued it.
Stoltz felt it would be a good fit for him and his wife, Jennifer.

A potential solution for York Catholic
Even with the understanding that he would be standing alone, York Catholic principal George Andrews still cast his vote against the schedules and realignment for football, basketball and golf over the 2008-10 cycle Monday afternoon. Afterward, he lamented what he described as the changing atmosphere and the disregard for traditional rivalries that have led to the decision to align by enrollment only. As gloomy as Andrews is forecasting the next two years, with predictions of lower ticket revenue and higher gas prices, he still has reason to hope for sunnier skies. "While we descent and disagree with this decision, there is a hope that the league will realize what they lost in terms of good competition," Andrews said following the meeting.

The name Bromsgrove is synonymous with sporting excellence, but there is also depth so that less able children can represent the School at appropriate levels. Aside from its well known successes in key sports such as rugby and hockey, Bromsgrove Preparatory School offers immense breadth, from climbing to karate, basketball to badminton. Staff are highly trained and committed to encouraging the children to fulfil their sporting potential while keeping alive the love of physical activity. We play with passion. And, yes, we like to win. Our fixture list is extensive and impressive. The range of activities, aside from the huge optional Saturday programme described elsewhere, is designed to challenge and delight. Academic assignments are in themselves nowhere near enough for a Bromsgrove child: a Bromsgrove education is rounded and for life.

Interlakes back for nationals
By DAN ANGELO SANDUSKY In many ways, the Interlake is what Sandusky Sailing Club is all about. The thing is, the club known as Fleet No. 1 in Interlake racing circles after commissioning the 18-foot boat in 1933, has not won a national regatta since it last hosted the event nine years ago. “This field is going to be really, really good,” said Scott Irwin, the SSC member who piloted his Interlake to the crown in 1998 with Skip Dieball as his crew. “I bet they’ll get 50 boats, and I’ll bet at least 10 guys have a legitimate chance to win it.” The 2007 Interlake National Championship takes over Sadler Basin for four days of racing, with registration Tuesday. Women’s and junior races kick off the event Wednesday and Championship and Challenger classes begin three-days of competition Thursday. “I think it’s personal for us,” SSC race chairman Kevin Bracy said, “It’s what we do here. You can go to almost any other club (which sails Interlakes) and you won’t find many of these boats. “We like the boats. We like the people who sail the boats. This is like a homecoming week.”
