Current rank: Not ranked SAN FRANCISCO Two of the San Francisco Section’s longest-standing swimming records could be in jeopardy in this year’s finals, scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Ignatius. Alden Chan, a Lowell junior, seems poised to set new marks in both the 50-meter freestyle and 100 freestyle, two of just three events where records set in 1990 or before still stand. The Cardinals’ Josh Harris swam the 50 in 22.32 seconds in 1987, while Lowell’s Lin Wang’s 1990 time of 49.65 seconds in the 100 has yet to be broken. Fifteen out of the 22 combined boys’ and girls’ events have had records posted since 2000, including four last year. “[Chan] hasn’t broken them yet, but it definitely seems like he’s peaking,” said Lincoln coach Phong Pham, also the section’s commissioner of sport. “He’s a very strong swimmer.” Both the Lowell boys and girls are the odds-on favorites to take the team titles, as each went 5-0 in Academic Athletic Association meets. But the Lincoln girls could make things interesting. The Mustangs are led by freshman Cynthia Tran (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle) and sophomore Rosalyn Sretpisalsilp (100 back, 200 individual medley).

Chamberlain wins match of local titans
NORTH TAMPA The area's top softball powers met Tuesday whenChamberlain shut down Sickles and took a 5-1 win. Chamberlain pitcher Amanda Cody overcame tonsillitis to dominate a usually strong-hitting Sickles team, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. Offensively, the Chiefs pounded out 10 hits, four of which were for extra bases. The win improves the Chiefs to 16-3 for the season, solidifying their no. 3 ranking in the Class 5A state poll. Sickles, meanwhile, slips to 12-3 but is still ranked no. 3 on the Class 4A poll. BASEBALL: With its convincing win against Leto in the tournament championship game March 30, Sickles became the first Saladino Tournament repeat champion since Bloomingdale did so during the 1994-95 season.

April 3 2008 Sterling Lopez, a senior at South High, signed a letter of intent Feb. 8 to play for the Truman State Bulldogs in Kirksville, Mo. Lopez was a first team all-conference defensive end and a second team tight end during the 2007 season. South beats North in all-star football After leading the state in rushing yards this season, Kenai's Bill Chimphalee made his mark in Saturday's Al Aska Shrine Football Classic with a game-winning reception. Juneau, Soldotna dominate high school all-state football teams Everybody loves a winner, and so apparently do high school football coaches. Palmer's Smith 'was the glue for the offense' Moments after the Palmer football team lost Saturday's large-school state championship game, quarterback Conrad Smith was overcome with emotion. State football Juneau-Douglas became the 13th team in large-schools history to finish its season undefeated. The Crimson Bears finished 10-1 when they won the 2005 state championship. It takes awhile to appreciate a silver lining Hopefully someday, the Palmer Moose will feel a greater sense of accomplishment for what they did this season.

Julia Jackson, shown here driving against a Fontainebleau defender, and the Hammond Lady Tors resume District 7-5A tonight in Covington against St. Scholastica. Hammond and Ponchatoula's boys and girls basketball teams picked up sweeps when District 7-5A play resumed Wednesday night. The teams try to maintain that momentum tonight as league play continues.
The Green Wave (13-9, 1-0) opened league play with a 79-68 road win over Northshore Wednesday night while the Tors routed Fontainebleau 82-51 at home as each bgrabbed early shares of the district lead.
Ponchatoula assistant coach John Derenbecker said the Lions (3-9, 0-1) are comparable to Albany in regard to their style of play. Covington is an aggressive team defensively that also runs a fast-paced offense.
"Those type of teams can catch fire at anytime," Derenbecker said. "We're trying to become a more consistent defensive team. We're trying to make every shot and every possession for the other team difficult. We have a tendency to let up at times."

Lady Mounties Use Three To Rout Springdale By Paul Nielsen
THE MORNING NEWS
ROGERS - Both Rogers and Springdale High tried to make a living from 3-point range Tuesday night. Only the Lady Mounties succeeded. Rogers hit five first-half 3-pointers and the Lady Mounties started the game with a 18-0 run before settling in for a 46-18 victory over the Lady Bulldogs in 7A-West Conference action. And it was all Rogers from the start. Rogers, which led 12-0 at the end of the first period, was 5 of 13 from 3-point range in the first half and led 25-7 at halftime. Springdale was for 8 from behind the arc in the first 16 minutes and the Lady Bulldogs' first points from the floor came almost 14 minutes into the game. The Lady Mounties (16-5 overall, 6-2 7A-West Conference) took a 39-12 lead into the final period "I thought defensively, we smothered them (Springdale) in the first half," said Rogers coach Preston Early. "We are getting better defensively. I thought our kids did a good job of being business-like tonight and taking care of it." Rogers hit eight 3-pointers in the game. Lauryn Harbison and Sarah Ross hit three 3-pointers each and both players finished with nine points. Harbison now has 59 3-pointers on the year, which is a Lady Mounties single-season record.

Categories: Prep Sports Hi: I wanted to apologize for not writing sooner. This week, I will either attend the Northshore/St Paul game or Dutchtown at East St John. Dutchtown is an interesting story. One of their top runners (Eddie Lacy) is a west bank kid. Before the storm he went to school at Helen Cox. East St John must improve its passing game to have a chance. Last week, East St John was 3 of 11 passing, but still won. Continue reading the entry...

"Since his son wasn't home yet, Tino Thomas thought it an opportune time to ask Miami (Fla.) head coach Larry Coker about his intentions for Melrose standout senior running back Graig Cooper.
"(Coker) said he wanted to put five to 10 pounds on him so he can come in, learn the playbook and blocking schemes and go through a whole 14-game season (as a freshman)," said Thomas..........
"(Coker) told Graig, 'We're recruiting you as a running back. We don't have to leave the state of Florida for defensive backs. But I'll leave the state of Florida for a running back, a quarterback or a defensive tackle. I'll go around the world to get them.'"
With that, Cooper, who rushed for 2,084 yards and 28 touchdowns for Class 4A state runnerup Melrose this season, committed to the Hurricanes on Tuesday over Louisville, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Tennessee State, the University of Memphis and Vanderbilt.
Rated the No. 32 running back nationally in the Class of 2006, Cooper (6-0, 195) will join former Melrose defensive back Carlos Armour at Miami.
