It has origins in carnival sideshows in the late 19th century as part of displays of athletics and strength, and its staged aspects grew out of a need to heighten excitement and lessen the strain on performers. Modern professional wrestling usually features simulated striking and grappling techniques, which are modeled after diverse sets of wrestling and pugilistic styles from around the world. Realistic performance is very physical and requires intense specialized training. Professional wrestling has gradually become a pervasive form of entertainment globally, especially in

Professional wrestling
Professional wrestling is a form of entertainment where the participants engage in simulated wrestling matches for means of entertainment. The simulated nature of professional wrestling is only one of the many differences it has with traditional wrestling Here is a list of offences punishable by disqualification:
  • Refusing to break a hold when your opponent is in the ropes. Choking or Biting your opponent for more than five seconds. Staying on the top turnbuckle for more than five seconds. Repeatedly punching a prone opponent in the face for more than five seconds. Outside interference. Striking your opponent with a foreign object. (smashing your opponent against a foreign object will usually not end the match in a DQ) Laying of hands on the referee.
In practice, the "rules" of the fight are often violated without disqualification due to the referee being "distracted" and not seeing the offence. Indeed, it is not uncommon for the referees themselves to get knocked out by the all-in melees. Obviously, while the referee remains unconscious, all bets are off. This plot twist is often used to drastically change the momentum in a match. Please note that simulated, in this context, does not necessarily mean fake. While the outcomes are predetermined, the manuevers executed cooperatively and their effects upon the opponents exaggerated, most moves are real and cause genuine pain (And if performed incorrectly, capable of causing serious injury).

Professional wrestling
ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase Professional wrestling is a form of performance entertainment where the participants engage in simulated sporting matches. In its purported rules and competitions, it apes the convention of sport . Originating as such, in the days of travelling carnival shows, Professional Wrestling's humbler beginnings include strongman feats, hook wrestling , and other acrobatic performances. For the better part of a century, professional wrestling promoters and performers claimed that the competition was completely real and vehemently defended secrets of the trade (a situation known as kayfabe ). Any pretence to be a sporting competition was dropped in the late , when Vince McMahon 's World Wrestling Federation began describing its events as " sports entertainment ," along with a formal change of moniker to World Wrestling Entertainment . (Although this was in response to a lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund against the World Wrestling Federation for the illegal use of the name "WWF"). Contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

A pro wrestler can try to lift the other and throw him. A pro wrestler can also hit the other with hands and feet, or jump on him. Introduction
Print this section Professional Wrestling , form of entertainment in which wrestlers battle each other in matches that are scripted and rehearsed beforehand. To help give the fights dramatic tension, some professional wrestlers adopt stage names, wear costumes, and make grand entrances into the arena. Before and after the actual bouts, many wrestlers also taunt and challenge each other and the spectators. Professional wrestling developed from amateur wrestling, but while the two sports resemble each other in some ways, they are not closely related. In most sports, professional competitors represent the sport’s best athletes—those with the ability to rise to the highest level of competition. Professional wrestlers are skilled athletes, but they perform as entertainers and not as competitors. The win-loss record of a professional wrestler, therefore, does not indicate how successful he or she is. Many professional wrestlers never win titles but nonetheless capture the imagination of fans and attract spectators and television viewers to the sport.

by Ted Rueter The shootings at schools in Colorado, Georgia, and Oklahoma have reenergized the debate over juvenile crime. Pundits and politicians have pointed to guns, R-rated movies, violent video games, Marilyn Manson concerts, and family breakdown as causes of America's culture of violence. I have another pernicious force to suggest: professional wrestling. The epitome of violence, sadomasochism, and sleaze, professional wrestling is trash TV for ugly Americans. Wrestling is big business. Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling (WCW) is on TBS and TNT. Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation (WWF) is on the USA Network. The WCW reaches an average of 300,000 viewers for its pay-per-view events. The WWF is building a 1,000-room casino hotel in Las Vegas. Both groups sell action figures, neckties, and greeting cards. Two WWF wrestlers"Mankind" and "The Rock"currently have best-selling autobiographies. Vince McMahon just announced the formation of a professional football league, the XFL, which will debut in 2001. Last August, Jesse Ventura, the Governor of Minnesota, stepped back into the ring as a "guest referee" for the WWF's Summerslam." He made $1 to $2 million on video sales and the use of his name.

Thats weird. I am amazed that Jake 'The Snake' invented it. You would think that such a simplistic move would have been one of the fundamental manouvres in wrestling. Illmatic 07-12-2006, 12:59 PM Yeah, and according to Wikipedia, he created it 'by accident'. A quick google search of Damien's Dinner Time says "Damien is the name of his snake".
