Racewalking is a long-distance event in the sport of athletics. Although the idea is to get from point 'A' to point 'B' as quickly as possible on two legs, racewalking is biomechanically quite different from running . According to the rules (below) one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Stride length is reduced, so to achieve competitive speeds, racewalkers must attain cadence rates comparable to those achieved by Olympic 400-meter runners–and they must do so for hours at a time since the Olympic distances are 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and 50 kilometers (31 miles.)
Contents
edit Rules
There are two rules that govern racewalking. The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as 'lifting.' The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes over it. These rules are judged by the human eye, which creates controversy at today's high speeds. Athletes may sometimes 'lift' for a few milliseconds per stride which can be caught on high-speed film, but such a short flight phase' is undetectable to the human eye. Athletes stay low to the ground by keeping their arms pumping low, close to their hips. If one sees a racewalker's shoulders rising, it may be a sign that the athlete is losing contact with the ground. What appears to be an exaggerated swivel to the hip is, in fact, a full rotation of the pelvis. Athletes aim to move the pelvis forward, and to minimize sideways motion in order to achieve maximum forward propulsion. Speed is achieved by stepping quickly with the aim of rapid turnover. This minimizes the risk of the feet leaving the ground. Strides are short and quick, with pushoff coming forward from the ball of the foot, again to minimize the risk of lifting off the ground. World-class racewalkers (male and female) can average under seven and eight minutes per mile, respectively, in a 20 km (12.4 mile) racewalk.

    RACEWALKING
Do you feel the need for speed Racewalking may be your answer. Although racewalking is a technique that can be used at any walking speed it is generally used by walkers to increase their speed and endurance. Plus the racewalking technique provides a great aerobic workout and burns more calories per mile than fitness walking or running.
Racewalking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs.
This is what differentiates racewalking from running. It means that there is a moment when the heel of the front foot and the toe of the rear foot appear to be in contact with the ground at the same time. Before the racewalker takes the rear foot off the ground, their front heel must make contact with the ground. Contact with the ground appears (to the human eye) to be maintained at all times.
The advancing leg must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until in the vertical position.
This differentiates racewalking from other forms of walking. It does not mean that your legs are straight at all times. The rule is that the knee should be straight when the heel strikes the ground. It must remain straight until it passes under the body. Then the knee bends and swings forward taking the next step.

One way to trim the fat from a bloated Olympic docket
Click here for more on this story Latest: Thursday September 28, 2000 06:57 PM SYDNEY, Australia The International Olympic Committee is frequently taken to task for adding new sports to its already overcrowded schedule. (Did we really need to make an Olympic sport out of trampoline?) The fault, however, is not that new sports are added, since the Games should stay relevant to the interests of society at large. The fault lies in that more sports aren't thrown out on their respective ears. It didn't used to be that way. Cricket, croquet and the once beloved "equestrian high jump" were evicted after the 1900 Games. The "plain high dive," which allowed no twists or somersaults, used to be an Olympic sport. So was live pigeon shooting. Now they won't even release live pigeons as part of the Opening Ceremonies, fearful of traumatizing the little beasts. Golf left after after 1904, the same year the fearful "plunge for distance," a diving event, met its Olympic demise. After 1920 the still popular tug-of-war was given the heave-ho daddy-o, and in 1932 "rope climbing" and the curiously named "club swinging" were discarded. The last sport to get the axe? Polo in 1936. Small wonder the Olympics is now so bloated it can't get up from its own stuffed couch.

In Athens, Korzeniowski, the best racewalker of all time, will seek to gild his greatness with one last gold. He already holds three world titles and three Olympic golds, including two from 2000, when he became the first man ever to sweep the 20-km and 50-km races. He hasn't lost at 50 km, his specialty, since 1999. And he's set a new record in his last two 50-km races, clocking 3 hr. 36 min. 3 sec. at the World Championships in Paris last August. Korzeniowski, 35, admits his career has turned out so well that "I could finish happily any day." So why bother with Athens? "I still have Olympic dreams," he says, flashing the first of many smiles. "I'm giving myself a bonus." He wants it in gold.
Racewalking's weird look is one reason why the Olympic family treats it like a misunderstood stepchild. Walkers can blame the rules, which require that one foot touch the ground at all times and, from the time the lead foot hits the ground, the lead leg be fully straight. Sounds simple, but try doing it for the nearly four hours that it takes a world-class racer to cover the 50 km (nearly 8 km more than a marathon). "Now I realize it looks strange," Korzeniowski says during a coffee break in his Tourcoing apartment. He didn't as a teen. The sport was popular in the part of southeast Poland where he grew up, so "you weren't just a single person with a funny walk." In any case, he was just glad to be doing something sporty. At 9, he'd come down with a rheumatic illness. Sports were off-limits. He recovered at 13, "a present from God," he says. "When I started to do sports, it was just to be part of the normal population."

Congratulations on your decision to learn racewalking. I'm glad you've decided to join us whether your goal is fitness, changing your shape, speed or competition. The Surgeon General's report on fitness states that Americans are killing themselves with inactivity. Inactivity is detrimental to your health, your waistline, your bones, and your stress level. Plus inactivity is a major cause of heart attacks and heart disease. The American Heart Association has rated "a sedentary lifestyle" as one of the primary risk factors for heart disease - right up there with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking! If we know how important it is to exercise, why are so few Americans fit? Well, it's not easy being fit. If it were easy, everyone would be fit. And we know everyone's not fit. In fact, less than 20% of our population exercises enough to even make a difference in their fitness level. Racewalking style can enhance your fitness and can provide a better workout (more calorie burning, more muscle toning, less injuries) than regular walking. Racewalking techniques can transform your walk into a workout at whatever intensity you choose.
