Walking Styles
Race walking, Nordic walking, power walking, freestyle walking...what is all of this? Can't I just go out and take the dog for a walk?
Of course you can and you should! But for some people, just putting one foot in front of another is not enough. There are many different styles of walking suited to people of differing ages, physical condition, and temperament. What follows is a description of the most popular walking styles.
Race Walking
Race walking is defined as follows: at any time at least one foot has contact with the ground (to the naked eye) and the supporting leg must be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of the first impact of the foot with the ground until the supporting leg passes below the body. The participants swivel and tilt their hips to lengthen their strides. The world's top racewalkers can walk a mile (1.6 km) in under six minutes! Try running a mile in six minutes if you want to appreciate what race walkers do. Racewalkers must maintain good form and are penalized for bending the knee as it passes under the body or having their feet lose contact with the ground. Race walking is an Olympic sport with distances of 20 kilometers for both men and women and 50 kilometers for men only. Mile for mile, race walkers burn more calories than runners.

Home I About Us I What We Do I Questions I Message Board I Contact Us athletics history of race walking Although it may look easy, Race Walking, an Olympic sport, is in reality very difficult. Race Walking is a long distance footrace in which the athletes must walk and not run. In Race Walking, there is a rule known as the “Straight Leg Rule”, which means, the moment the leading foot touches the ground and until the leg passes under the center of the body, the knee is not allowed to bend. Athletes are penalized for bending their knees as their knee passes under the body or when one of their feet are not touching the ground; which is why form and technique is very important in this sport. Judges who watch every walker to determine whether they are to be disqualified or not. There are usually about 9 or 10 judges that participate in each event. These judges judge the race with the naked eye, as video judging is not accepted in the race. They hold up paddles that would have symbols that mean “Loss of Contact (of the road)” and “Bent Knee”. These judges also send out a warning card that the main judge, or Chief Judge would receive these warning cards and when a race walker receives three warning cards from three different judges, that racer is disqualified. Race Walking can be dated back to about 400 years ago in England. It did not take long to become a very popular sport throughout the world. By the 19

    About CAN
By Lisa Mount Some Thoughts on the 2003 Annual Meeting and What We Decided There Lisa Mount The 2003 Annual Meeting of Alternate ROOTS was a watershed event in many ways: the best food we've had in years thanks to the culinary artistry of Fast and French, a renewed sense of commitment from members (including record numbers volunteering to serve on the executive committee and workgroups, as well as more than $10,000 in contributions pledged by members), and real decisions made about how to substantively change the predominantly white culture of the organization. What follows are my highly personal reflections on this year's meeting's discussions and decisions about undoing racism. Addressing issues of race has been high on ROOTS' agenda since its founding, because Jo Carson and the others who organized the meeting at the Highlander Center deliberately invited the Free Southern Theater and Carpetbag Theatre, among other black theater companies working in the south. Formally, ROOTS has had a policy of working to dismantle the power structures of race since 1987, when a performance by Margaret Baker entitled "Rock 'o' My Soul in the Bosom of Just About Anybody Except a Minority Baptist Church" told the story of Moses and mixed it up with the story of Little Black Sambo. Some audience members saw it as satire, but others were deeply offended. Pearl Cleage and Zeke Burnette spoke up and demanded attention be paid to the use of hurtful stereotypes in any context. Race walking wins out - racing walking can offer benefits of running without physiological damage - Brief Article
March, 2000
You've seen it at races, sometimes on the road, and maybe you've tried it yourself. It's not running, not jogging, not walking, not even power walking. Race walking is an entirely different game. Olympic-style race walking is designed to propel the body as fast as possible without becoming airborne as in running or jogging. Although power walking is a great exercise, it is not as fast and efficient as Olympic race walking.

Fitness Walking : Technique, Motivation, and 60 Workouts for Walkers
(Fitness Spectrum)
by Therese Iknoian The author, Therese Iknoian , 03/25/97
I want to share my passion for walking.I'm so proud of this book because it makes walking completely accessible. Explanations are clear, pictures are colorful, pictures are mostly of real walker friends of mine, and there's no scientific jargon. I tried hard to make the book friendly welcoming novice walkers with simple how-to's and dozens of unintimidating workouts. Yet it also leads more intermediate walkers through workouts that can progress to half-marathons. And, above all, it's passionate because I am a passionate walker. I hope you'll enjoy this book, then come back for more when my next, more advanced walking book is released in early 1998 (also Human Kinetics). This one is an exciting combination that is a real labor of love because it takes loads of science and biomechanics, and boils it down for walkers who want more to be able fine-tune their technique and to build scientifically sound workouts and training programs. I can't wait to see it!
