Rallying is a form of motor competition that takes place on public or private roads with modified production or specially built road-legal cars. This motorsport is distinguished by running not on a circuit , but instead in a point-to-point format in which participants and their co-drivers drive between set control points (stages), leaving at regular intervals from one or more start points. Rallies may be won by pure speed within the stages or alternatively by driving to a predetermined ideal journey time within the stages.

Until the late 1920s, few if any other events used the term. Rallying itself can be traced back to the 1894 Paris Rouen Horseless Carriage Competition (Concours des Voitures sans Chevaux) , sponsored by a Paris newspaper, Le Petit Journal , which attracted considerable public interest and entries from leading manufacturers. Prizes were awarded to the vehicles by a jury based on the reports of the observers who rode in each car; the joint winners were

What Is A Road Rally?
  • A Road Rally is not a race.
  • A Road Rally is not illegal.
  • A Road Rally does not require special equipment.
  • A Road Rally is an amateur event.
  • A Road Rally encourages novices to participate.
  • A Road Rally is a lot of fun.
In a Road Rally, each team of two peoplea driver and a navigatoris given a set of route directions to follow, and the speeds at which they should travel the route. The route will generally consist of rural and quieter back roads. At the very least, you'll have a nice drive in the country! The goal of a Road Rally is to travel the correct route at the correct speeds, and arrive at ``checkpoints'' precisely on time. You are scored on how closely to the correct time you arrive. A Road Rally is not a race, and no rally will ever require you to drive in a reckless or illegal fashion. Arriving too early at a checkpoint hurts your score, as does arriving too late. Novices are especially encouraged to participate in Road Rallies. Novices compete within a special Novice Class, and not with the more experienced rallyists.

Foreword by President George W. Bush America is rich materially, but there remains too much poverty and despair amidst abundance. Government can rally a military, but it cannot put hope in our hearts or a sense of purpose in our lives. The paramount goal must be compassionate results, not compassionate intentions. Federal policy should reject the failed formula of towering, distant bureaucracies that too often prize process over performance. We must be outcome-based, insisting on success and steering resources to the effective and to the inspired. Also, we must always value the bedrock principles of pluralism, nondiscrimination, evenhandedness and neutrality. Private and charitable groups, including religious ones, should have the fullest opportunity permitted by law to compete on a level playing field, so long as they achieve valid public purposes, like curbing crime, conquering addiction, strengthening families, and overcoming poverty. In this blueprint, I outline my agenda to enlist, equip, enable, empower and expand the heroic works of faith-based and community groups across America. The building blocks are two Executive Orders, signed yesterday, that call for the creation of a high-level White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, and instruct five Cabinet departments to establish Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

Anti-Illegal Immigration Forces Rally Against McCain
By Julia Preston Conservative groups that battle illegal immigration, alarmed by the advance of John McCain, are rallying their forces today against him. Roy Beck, the president of NumbersUSA , one of the biggest of those organizations, sent out an e-mail action alert early this morning that he said went to 1.5 million members. Warning of “political illiteracy” among Republican voters that “threatens disastrous consequences,” Mr. Beck cited a Washington Post/ABC News poll over the weekend showing that 47 percent of Republican voters most trusted McCain on immigration, while 22 percent trusted Mitt Romney. Mr. Beck disputed Mr. McCain’s recent statements that his priority is border security. “About the only time McCain has backed more security on the border is when it is tied to amnesty,” he said, using conservatives’ term for policies giving legal status to illegal immigrants, which Mr. McCain has long defended and Mr. Beck has long opposed.

Today's rallying is made for TV with everything happening under the eyes of the camera, often only minutes away from the rally headquarters and the hotels where the crews spend their nights.
A far cry from the great events of the 1960s and 70s when man and machine were often alone for hours, even days, with little support. Cars now have expendable parts and a gearbox can be changed in twenty minutes. On the long tough rallies of yesteryear we had to drive 3000 kms exclusively up and down the French Alpes, against the clock for most of the way, and look after the gearbox and every other part of the car, since changing them was out of the question. Liège-Sofia-Liège was even worse, being almost a flat out drive from Belgium to Bulgaria and back, through the roughest roads the length of Yugoslavia and over the horrific little passes like the Gavia and the Vivione in the Italian Dolomites. Service was wherever the service crews could reach and was usually limited to a change of tires, refueling and, hopefully, minor repairs, since any time used for service had to be made up on the road by the driver.

John McCain 's win over Mike Huckabee in South Carolina was no landslide, but it stands as by far the most important win in his quest for the presidency. It means that McCain by any measurement is the front-runner for the Republican nomination. He leads in Florida 's Jan. 29 primary, and a victory there would send him into what is virtually a national primary on Feb. 5 threatening to wipe out his competition. The question is whether the Republican establishment's grudges will persist, as they have for former House majority leader Tom DeLay , to somehow keep from the nomination the candidate that Democrats believe would be the strongest Republican in the general election. The probable answer is no, because it is Republican nature to abhor a Democrat-like free-for-all and to seek an anointed candidate. McCain is far closer to such status than is his principal rival

A new rallying cry
Why the concept of justice - not freedom, not democracy - is becoming a potent tool for political reform in the Muslim world
Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Justice Party, speaks at an October anti-government rally in Pakistan. (Getty Images) October 28, 2007 PAKISTANIS ARE USING the Urdu word zulm a lot these days. The twin suicide bombings last week in the port city of Karachi that left hundreds injured and dead were zulm. So is a deal between political rivals that left millions of dollars stolen from the state unaccounted for. The Pakistan Army's continuing military assault on the tribal areas is being termed zulm. The bombing of girls' schools by Taliban militants in the same tribal belt along the Afghan border, the US military's operation in Iraq - all zulm. The word signifies severe cruelty or injustice. The Arabic root implies doing wrong, and is used in the Koran as the most basic reference to sin. Zalimeen are sinners who commit zulm. Allah does not guide them, it says in the holy book - their abode is a fiery hell. In Pakistan, a country caught in the middle of several wars, the words are read in the press and heard on TV and in tea-stalls on street sides every day. There is much zulm in the world today, and many zalimeen on all sides. The antithesis of zulm is adl, the Koranic word for justice, and insaf, the Persian equivalent. The demand for adl-o-insaf, for justice, has emerged as a compelling rallying call in Pakistan. It has become a vital tenet of the nationalists and of Islamist party rhetoric, it is built into the spirit of the civil society movement for democracy led by lawyers and championed by Supreme Court judges, and it is the platform for the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, or Pakistan Justice Party, a political party led by Imran Khan, a onetime cricket star.

An animated rallying cry for a reluctant generation in "Chicago 10"
By Jeff Shannon Special to The Seattle Times PREV of NEXT COURTESY OF ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS The animated film "Chicago 10" interprets transcripts of the raucous trial of protesters Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale (background). Movie review "Chicago 10," with the voices of Hank Azaria, Mark Ruffalo, Jeffrey Wright, Roy Scheider, Liev Schreiber, Nick Nolte, Dylan Baker. Written and directed by Brett Morgen. 103 minutes. Rated R for language, brief sexual images. Varsity. It will be interesting to see how Brett Morgen's "Chicago 10" compares with Steven Spielberg's upcoming production of "The Trial of the Chicago 7." If "Munich" is any indication, we can expect Spielberg's film (due in 2009) to offer an exacting re-creation of tumultuous events surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where the collision of Vietnam War protesters and club-wielding police resulted in riots, arrests and (a year later) some of the most uproarious courtroom theatrics in American history. Spielberg's take on history will surely be invigorating, with the rumored (but still unconfirmed) casting of Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat") as Abbie Hoffman. The irreverent "Yippie" leader, along with cohort Jerry Rubin and other high-profile protesters, turned the "Chicago 7" trial into a raucous demonstration of "total theater" aimed at stripping Judge Julius Hoffman (no relation) of his courtroom authority.
