A innovative, educational and exciting perspective of the Black American West history This season marks our 25th year of producing the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo and sometimes it's been a lot like Bull Ridin' , we get tossed around and jostled, but we've stayed on top, and the ride has been worth it. Most of the credit belongs to all the people that make the rodeo the great event it is; the cowboys and cowgirls, the sponsors and the terrific fans who come year after year to see the greatest riders in the world. In fact, Texas was discovered and explored by a Black cowboy named Estavanico, and over 35% of the cattle trail drivers in Texas were Black. Entire Black communities existed on the frontier of the Old West - over one-half million families in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas alone. The famous Lewis and Clark Expedition was led by a Black scout, and a Black cowboy named Bill Pickett created , which has become one of the major rodeo events today.

Lopez is recognized as the Tucson Rodeo Parade Grand Marshal for 2008 because he is a mentor, a leader, and a contributor to the community. When Lopez was 12, his father died unexpectedly and his world changed dramatically. Both his mother and Lopez, who was the oldest of six children, went to work to support the family. Years of poverty followed. He soon learned that the best way to escape the life of pverty was through education. His success came through hard work, perserverance and life lessons from family. We are people who love it, and want to protect it so that it is around for generations to come. The problem is, in today's society it is common for all aspects of animal use (from farming to zoos) to be criticized by animal rights activists. No matter what you do with an animal, someone is of an opinion that it is wrong. If everybody recognized that the outrageous things that are said are just opinion, and not fact, there wouldn't be a need for a group like us. But fewer and fewer people have ties with rural roots, and many folks just don't know better. Let me give you an example of how easily people get a wrong impression. A rodeo patron at a California rodeo came to our booth concerned about some of the "cows" she saw in one of the pens. She assumed they might have tooth aches because they were wearing a leather device that encircled their face. What she had seen was the protective head gear, or "horn wraps", that is put on roping steers to prevent their heads from being rubbed by the rope as the slack is pulled around their horns in the team roping event. This woman wasn't part of the animal rights protest scene; she was someone who just didn't know what she was looking at. No wonder uninformed people can be taken in by deliberately misleading statements!
