WBUR on Facebook
Our beloved and very, very good public radio station, WBUR, now has a page on Facebook and is friending people throughout the community. At this moment, they have just 139 friends, but I am predicting it will grow by a factor of ten by midnight tonight.
This is a great idea. It would be stronger still if all the reporters, hosts, and editors had Facebook pages so they could hear directly from their (usually!) admiring public.
Cross media connections continue to grow! Posted by Paul Levy at 4/03/2008 08:01:00 AM 0 comments Links to this post

When an employee gets really ill
A recent case prompted me to inquire about a particular individual, and I thereby learned our policies. The issue is the degree to which a company offers employees financial support for health care insurance versus limiting the company's financial exposure after a long-term illness and absence from work. I am curious if our policies in this regard are similar to other corporations out there. Please offer comments on this matter.
The specific situation is the treatment of an employee (let's call him Sam) who is forced to miss an extended period of work because of illness. First, note that we offer long-term disability coverage, so that there is some wage support after sick time and other short-term support is exhausted. Our policy, though, is to remove Sam from the payroll for health benefit purposes after one year being out of work.

Photograph by Maria Daniels, courtesy of The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology There were 4 types of races at Olympia. The stadion was the oldest event of the Games. Runners sprinted for 1 stade (192 m.), or the length of the stadium. The other races were a 2- stade race (384 m.), and a long-distance run which ranged from 7 to 24 stades (1,344 m. to 4,608 m.). And if these races weren't enough, the Greeks had one particularly grueling event which we lack. There was also a 2 to 4- stade (384 m. to 768 m.) race by athletes in armor. This race was especially useful in building the speed and stamina that Greek men needed during their military service. If we remember that the standard hoplite armor (helmet, shield, and greaves)weighed about 50-60 lbs, it is easy to imagine what such an event must have been like.

Running the Numbers
An American Self-Portrait
This series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 410,000 paper cups used every fifteen minutes. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. The underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming.
My only caveat about this series is that the prints must be seen in person to be experienced the way they are intended. As with any large artwork, their scale carries a vital part of their substance which is lost in these little web images. Hopefully the JPEGs displayed here might be enough to arouse your curiosity to attend an exhibition, or to arrange one if you are in a position to do so. The series is a work in progress, and new images will be posted as they are completed, so please stay tuned.

A shift, someone called it once. The polarizing filter on my heart has spun, and all is cast into sharper relief. The colors more intense. My path less glaring. The more I lose, the richer my possibilities become. The more I risk, the safer this all feels. Regret and loss remain, of course, and the pipevine I planted six years ago picked this week to grow exuberant at last. The swallowtails will feed on it when I am gone. I had hoped to watch them from my porch, and yet the desert has swallowtails enough.
