Lindsey was then co-director of Rural Studio and head of Auburn's School of Architecture. Rural Studio is an experiential, community-based architecture program in rural Alabama, in which student teams plan, design and build community projects “to allow students to put their educational values to work as citizens of a community … within the community's own context, not from outside it.” The essay was commissioned by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts for "Craft and Community: Sustaining Place," a 2006 symposium on Haystack’s beautiful campus on Deer Isle, Maine. The King of Spades, however has been altered to look like a Sambo. The $100 bill is always under the Sambo card, and in fact you can see a piece of it there. This particular street hawker is wearing a white sheet in the style of the KKK. Does the black man take the money? Is he insulted by the Sambo card? Where is his enlightened self-interest? I say that the proper man is not insulted by this game. For him it is easy money, because he is not plagued by the demons of race. He has achieved a level of self-actualization and is a player in free markets that obviates him from the guilt trips of white supremacy. Moreover, he sees the street hawker as a tool and the recognizes the limits of that game.

Twenty-seven years later, she again arrived in a college environment to discuss the book, but this time, she met with eager faces and applause. The collection will be housed in Olin Library's Department of Special Collections. To make an appointment to see the collection, call 935-5495, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. "The collection is hugely important in support of the University's Children's Studies minor," said Gerald L. Early, Ph.D., the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters and director of the Center for the Humanities. "Anything that will increase the scholarly interest in children's literature and the study of objects marketed to children is vital to those of us invested in this minor. 'Little Black Sambo' is one of the most important and problematic children's books in the English-speaking world." "The Story of Little Black Sambo" was written by Helen Bannerman, a native of Scotland, and was intended to entertain her daughters, 6 and 3, who were living with her and her husband William in colonial India. Dr Sambo, 52, of Angolan nationality, is currently the Director of Programme Management at the WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO), where he is responsible for the management and operation of the programmes of WHO in the African region.
