External rigid frameworks, such as those found in some invertebrates (e.g. insects ), are termed exoskeletons . Internal rigid frameworks, such as those found in most vertebrates (e.g. mammals ), are termed endoskeletons The human skeleton is comprised of 206 bones . These bones meet at joints , the majority of which are freely movable, making the skeleton flexible and mobile. The skeleton also contains cartilage for elasticity. Ligaments are strong strips of fibrous connective tissue that hold bones together at joints, thereby stabilizing the skeleton during movement.

edit Main functions
Skeletons provide 'cages' to protect the delicate organs. (e.g. The ribcage helps protect the lungs, heart, etc). Moreover, it give muscles 'sides' or edge to attach to (through tendons). it also gives balance , skeleton keep the body at shape. Bones come in different sizes, the longest bone, the femur and the shortest, stapes. The outer layer of the bones are called compact bones, and the middle, called spongy or cancellous bone, which are hollow contains bone marrow. Joints of bones are held together by ligaments, which are fine fibers attaching to each bone at joints. In order for bones to not scrape against each other, slippery cartilage and synovial fluid are covered atop the bones.

The online skeleton is an introduction to the human skeleton in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. It started life as a section in a booklet on Forensic Anthropology which I produced for my students at the University of New England. The emphasis in this course was towards procedures which were of relevance to people working in Australia. This shows through in the examples and data used in the pdf document. The online skeleton is a 1.4 Mb file, with a large number of photographs. In order to keep the document at a manageable size the majority of these were scanned at only 72 dpi. Although the photographs are at a low resolution the document is designed to be printed rather than read on screen. Links within the pdf file are indicated by red text, for instance on the anterior and posterior illustrations of the human skeleton, or by thumbnail size pictures within the text. You are free to use this document as long as it is not for commercial gain and acknowledge where you obtained it from. The contents and emphasis of the online skeleton were strongly influenced by the following two books Warwick, R. and Williams, P. 1973.

    The Topic:
    Skeletal System
Easier - A skeleton is an inner framework made of bone and cartilage. Bones are the hard material of a skeleton. The skeleton supports and/or protects the softer body parts of a fish, bird, or human. These animals are called vertebrates. They all have a backbone. Harder - The skeleton is the flexible, bony framework found in all vertebrate animals. The skeleton maintains a body shape, protects vital organs, and provides a system of muscle levers that allow body movement. The skeleton contains bone marrow, the blood-forming tissues of the body. Bone marrow stores needed minerals such as calcium and phosphorus and releases them into the blood. A human skeleton generally forms about 206 separate bones out of cartilage as it develops to maturity. Bones are connected to adjacent bones by joints. Joints are either movable as in the arm and leg or immovable as in the skull. Facts About Fractures and Broken Bones from KidsHealth
