Around 1990, Austrian company Kneissel introduced the BigFoot, a 65 centimeter, foam-injected ski with a binding system. Some consider the BigFoot to be the first mass-produced skiboard. Next came the MicroSki, created by Kent Keiswieller in 1992. From 1993-1996, the first products actually referred to as skiboards were manufactured by several pioneer companies, including Canon, Line, GrooveUSA, Klimax, and Powder Company.

(This picture was taken on the moguls at Keystone Resort in March, 2000.) It's time to reveal my dirty little secret: I haven't actually been on Sled Dogs snow skates for a couple years now. Instead, I'm now into my third season of skiboarding. There are probably people out there asking, "What the heck is skiboarding?" Some are asking, "What's wrong with Sled Dogs? I thought you liked them." A few naysayers out there are probably saying, "Feh. Why not ride a snowboard instead? Or why not get a pair of real skis instead?" And, there are some enthusiasts who are going to read this and say, "Cool! I want some more information!"
What is skiboarding? What are skiboards?
Skiboards are basically a cross between skis and snowboards. They're about half the length of regular skis (between 80 and 100 centimeters long), and about twice as wide. Most skiboards have a sidecut (like the popular shaped skis), and many have upturned tips both in front and in back. Skiboarding is the art of using skiboards to get down the hill. That explanation was easy enough, but it doesn't mention why skiboarding is fun or appealing. Like the Sled Dogs I started off on, skiboards are a good winter crossover sport for people who like inline skating in the summer. But they're also good for doing tricks and stunts, and for developing your own style. I like carving across the slopes on them, going for the jumps, and taking them on the halfpipe. They're also great in the moguls they're maneuverable without having to physically punish yourself like you would with skis. Some of the pros do really impressive tricks, such as 720's and various flips. (I don't have the aggressive inline skating background, so that sort of thing doesn't come naturally to me, but hey.)

Links to skiboard manufacturers on the web Introduction The last ten years have seen the virtual monopoly of alpine skiing first broken by the advent of snowboarding, followed by the rising popularity of telemark skiing on piste. In the last three years, skiboarding (snowblading) has emerged and also established itself as a separate snow sport. The precursor to the modern skiboard was the BigFoot – manufactured by Kneissl Dachstein. First introduced in 1991 and measuring 63cm in length, the original BigFoot featured a foam core, p-tex base and trademark 'toes' on the tip. Users wore standard ski boots secured to the boards with non-release clip bindings attaching to the heel and toe of the boot. Since 1993 several companies including Klimax, GrooveUSA and Line have produced skiboards However, the popularity of the sport only really began to take off in 1997 when Salomon, a major ski manufacturer, entered the market specifically using the term “snowblade”. Following on from this success, most of the major ski companies now manufacture skiboard products.

History
The graduated length method (GLM) of ski instruction was developed during the 1960s. A beginner starts out on short skis, because it's easier to ski on them, and the ski length is increased gradually as the student's skills improve. Some instructors tried the short skis and discovered they could perform many maneuvers that were difficult or impossible with longer skis. Other experienced skiers also began using them from time to time for the same reason, and several manufacturers began to produce and market short skis during the 1970s. The real prototype of the modern skiboard was the Atomic Glider, a 63.5-centimeter (approximately 26-inch) ski designed in 1982 to fit into a hiker's backpack. Soon renamed the Figl, this ski didn't have bindings, because it was meant to be strapped to a hiking boot. It was sold primarily in Colorado. About 1990, the Big Foot was introduced by Kneissel. It was just slightly longer than the Figl, at 65 centimeters, but it was quite different because of its foam-injected construction, its sidecut, and its binding system. Many consider the Big Foot to be the first real skiboard. Others would award that honor to the MicroSki, which was invented by Kent Keiswieller in 1992. He began with a snowboard, whittled away at it, and added a hands-free binding system.

    Instructions
    Difficulty: Moderate
    Step 1:
Follow the code of ski conduct set down by the International Ski Federation: 1. Respect others and don't endanger them by your skiing conduct. 2. Stay in control. Most accidents are caused by out-of-control skiers. 3. Choose a safe route and one your skill level can handle. 4. When overtaking other skiers, allow space for them to move unexpectedly. 5. Always look both ways when starting a run, entering a trail or starting up after stopping while on a route. 6. Don't stop in narrow spots or where visibility is hindered. Move to the side if you must stop. 7. When moving on foot, keep to the side. 8. Never enter a closed ski run. Obey all trail signs. 9. In case of an accident, you are bound to assist, if possible, and to give ski patrol officers any relevant information.
