WHAT'S WRONG WITH ARKANSAS? SKIPPING DEMOCRACY 101 THIS YEAR
Everything must be really great in Arkansas. Not a single member of the state's congressional delegation up for re-election in November Senator Mark Pryor, Vic Snyder, Marion Berry, Mike Ross, and John Boozman has drawn an opponent. Boozman is the only Republican and he's been a completely lockstep rubber stamp who virtually never opposes the Bush Regime on anything. Among Democrats, Arkansas' 3 congressmen can be described as right-of-center. Less generously, one would note they are Bush Dogs or Blue Dogs not out and out reactionaries like Jim Marshall (GA), Dan Boren (OK) or John Barrow (GA), but not exactly men you want to depend on to helping working families or clean up the catastrophic mess the Bush Regime has made. Mike Ross, an egregious Blue Dog was one of the 21 members who wrote a letter to Speaker Pelosi demanding that they be given the opportunity to vote for retroactive immunity for the criminal campaign contributors. Marion Berry joined him in that.

January 8, 2004 With a sidearm toss and flick of the wrist, people young and old have been skipping stones across bodies of water for thousands of years. The object is simple: get as many bounces as possible. Jerdone Coleman McGhee of Wimberley, Texas, holds the current Guinness Book of World Records title for a 1992 toss that yielded an impressive 38 bounces across the Blanco River in central Texas. John McCain Vote Skipping Leads to Laughable Hypocrisy
Everyone knows that John McCain skips more votes in the Senate than just about anyone, once going five straight weeks without voting. The media doesn't make that big of a deal out of McCain's habit of skipping out on his day job, but this newest development can't be ignored. McCain went before a Philadelphia town hall today and called for action on law enforcement, worker education, and VA health care. But just yesterday he missed votes in the Senate that remedied problems in these three areas. See the details, after the jump: McCain TODAY: Will Support Law Enforcement: McCain called the spike in murders in Philadelphia area “tragic and terrible” and said “I can commit that I will provide whatever support I can to law enforcement agencies.” [Town Hall in Springfield, PA, 3/14/08] McCain LAST NIGHT: Skipped Vote to Increase Funding for COPS Program. Diabulimia (Skipping Insulin to Slim Down) Increases Morbidity and Mortality CNN first mentioned “diabulimia” last June:
"Like many teenage girls, Lee Ann Thill was obsessed with her appearance. Then one day at a camp for diabetic teens, she heard counselors chew out two girls for practicing “diabulimia” — not taking their insulin so they could lose weight, one of the consequences of uncontrolled diabetes..."
Not surprisingly, a study published in Diabetes Care shows that women who restrict insulin face higher mortality and morbidity. The study authors also proposed a screening question for diabulimia asking patients to answer true or false to the statement, “I take less insulin than I should.”

MIT MIT MIT has come up with a search engine that scans lectures for key words (like white dwarf) and lets students play just that part of the lecture back. Lewin mentions white dwarfs, for example, at the 9-minute-and-20-second mark. MIT lectures, in video and audio, and the technology could be adopted at other universities. The search engine is based on speech-recognition software that, MIT researchers say, gets four out of five words in a lecture correct. Permalink

We are the home of The Broken Hourglass, a new CRPG in development for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers. Inside the Engine: Skipping Events On the fourth Monday of each month, we explore the code underneath The Broken Hourglass, the game environment called "WeiNGINE." This month, we explain how scripting can cause game events to be "skipped," which is more useful than it may seem, and which, of course, the documentation discourages... Scripting in WeiNGINE keys off game events. There are roughly 90 events the scripting language can hook into, ranging from loading an area to resolving an attack. Most of the time, scripters simply want to add a special occurrence on top of the event which is already taking place, such as:
    - We just entered the Wasteland district, so we want to spawn an encounter with scavengers.
    - We just scored a hit with a special weapon, so we want to add some bonus damage or a special effect.
    - Horace just spotted the PC, so we want him to approach and initiate dialogue.

    50. The Mechanics Of Rock-Skipping, Alaska Science Forum
Article about how rocks skip on the surface of water and sand.
    http://www.gi.alaska.edu/ScienceForum/ASF7/731.html
    Alaska Science Forum
    August 23, 1985 The Mechanics Of Rock-Skipping
Article #731 by Larry Gedney This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Larry Gedney is a seismologist at the Institute. When a rock skips on a dry surface (top), the trailing edge strikes first, and then the leading edge. On water, the rock does not tip. Like any kid, I was fascinated with skipping rocks. Give me a quiet pond (actually, in my case, it was an irrigation canal) and an ample supply of skipping stones and it would keep me off the streets for hours. I was therefore gratified to note that an article by James Trefil in the August 1985 issue of the prestigious Smithsonian Magazine takes the matter seriously. Better still, it makes reference to an even earlier article by Dr. Ernest Wright in the April 1957 issue of Scientific American The reason for my feeling smug about all this is that the furor is over something that I had discovered independently as a boy, but didn't recognize at the time as being worthy of such profound attention. The observation is simply this: on a solid surface (such as the dried-out lake bed in Nevada where I did my skipping when the canal was dry), a rock hits the ground not once, but twice before soaring off on another skip. It is easy to see two scuff marks on the ground, about four to six inches apart, at every point where the rock bounces back into the air. The distance between the scuff marks seemed to be related to the size of the rockthe larger the rock, the greater the distance, but I didn't know why. I wondered if the rock also hit twice on the water. I didn't think so, but couldn't be sure.

ABC wants to kill DVR ad-skipping Posted Jul 6th 2006 4:56PM by Chris Thilk
Filed under: Gripes Television Warning : You may want to go to your happy place before reading this.)
ABC executives have held discussions with the people providing consumers with DVRs about a potential future feature for the devices that would disable the ad-skipping. That's just one of the comments made by ABC President of Advertising Sales Mike Shaw following the networks' finally closing out their upfront session. Shaw feels that everyone on the ad-delivery side of the equation, from networks to cable operators, should be on the side of no-DVR-skippage since they all rely on selling ads. He doesn't think this is going to be a big deal for consumers, since they'll still be so happy the can easily record their shows for later that they'll barely notice and definitely won't be part of any backlash. This despite frequent assertions that most people considering DVRs are doing so for the ad-skipping feature. Shaw says he felt ABC was hung out to dry by other networks who folded so quickly to buyer demands that prices not include DVR viewings.
Terry Heaton also called "BS" on this whole argument by Shaw. Heaton points out that the networks effectively shot themselves in the foot, shins, kneecaps and hip bones on this issue by turning more and more time over to ads, leading to the consumer backlash that prompted DVRs to catch on in the first place. He even has a graph from eMarketer that shows commercial skipping is the second most important thing people are looking for from a DVR.

Skin-care industry skipping out on science?
BOSTON, Aug. 22, 2007 — The multi-billion-dollar global cosmetics and skin-care-product industry sometimes is beset by a me-too mindset in which research and development focuses on matching the competition rather than applying sound science to improve products, a scientist told the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society. As a result, it could be missing a golden opportunity to provide consumers with more effective products, according to a Stig E. Friberg, Ph.D. a chemist who studies cosmetic ingredients. As an example, Friberg points out that previously unknown changes occur in the structures of colloids used in skin care lotions. As a result, the lotion sitting in the bottle, he said, is actually different from the same lotion applied to the skin. Friberg has spent years in fundamental studies of the backbone of any lotion — a mixture or “emulsion” of oil and water. Along with a third ingredient, a surfactant that keeps the liquids from separating, emulsions are the basis of almost every skin lotion. Although the system may sound simplistic, Friberg said it’s not as straightforward as scientists once believed.

Yet another study is confirming that adolescents who skip breakfast have a higher risk of being overweight.
"There's a pretty significant inverse association between how frequently kids report eating breakfast and how much weight they gain over time, and we took into account other dietary factors and physical activity," said Mark Pereira, associate professor of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He was a co-author of the study, published in the March issue of Pediatrics.
"It's interesting to note that the kids who eat breakfast on a daily basis overall have a much better diet and are more physically active," Pereira said.
Stroke risk rises with stress level
The notion that stress can help bring on a stroke may have merit, British researchers say.
"If you divide the population into five different groups according to how severe their stress is, someone in the highest stress group, reporting the greatest stress, has a 40 percent increased risk of stroke than someone in the lowest group," said Paul G. Surtees, a psychologist at the University of Cambridge. "That is quite a difference."

Skipping insulin shots is deadlier than it seems. According to a study conducted by researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center , women with type 1 diabetes who took less insulin than prescribed had a three times higher risk of death and higher rates of disease complications that those who didn't. The 11-year study, published in the March issue of Diabetes Care , concluded that moratily associated with less insulin dosage appeared in the context of eating disorder symptoms such as concern for body weight and shape, restrictive eating patterns, binge eating, and vomiting. In addition to risk of mortality, there was a higher problem rate in kidneys and feet as well.

skipping through skopje Well, that was an interesting four days.
Thursday afternoon there was a blizzard at DFW. In March. In Texas. After waiting in line for 4.5 hours (which is more than a little bit entertaining if you're in line with a Finnish female bodybuilder, a Kentucky redneck, and a Dallas gambler, which I was), I finally got a new ticket, went to crash at my cousin's house, and actually, unbelievably took off only ten minutes late on Friday morning.
Thursday at noon in Austin is the last time I saw my luggage. Between trips to the Pristina airport and countless hours my daddy has spent on the phone with American Airlines, it appears that my luggage has, alternately, been "going to meet [me] in Chicago," in Istanbul, in London, in Chicago, back in London, maybe going to Vienna, and still in London. They think.
The important thing is that I'm not bitter.
