By Liz Pulliam Weston Dear Liz: I'm getting a divorce, and my soon-to-be-ex-wife has stopped making payments on a car loan that's in my name. I can't afford to make the payments, and now the lender is calling. If the car gets repossessed, will that affect my almost perfect credit, and will I be able to get that off my credit history after the court settles our divorce? Answer: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your "almost perfect credit" became history as soon as she missed the first payment. If your name is on the loan, you're responsible for making sure the payments get made. If you fail to do so, that fact will be reflected on your credit reports and will result in a significant drop in your credit scores. A repossession will just make matters worse.

      Generation-Skipping Trust
A type of legally binding trust agreement in which the contributed assets are passed down to the grantor's grandchildren, not the grantor's children. The generation to which the grantor's children belong skips the opportunity to receive the assets in order to avoid the estate taxes that would apply if the assets were transferred to them. Because a generation-skipping trust effectively transfers assets from the grantor's estate to his or her grandchildren, the children of the grantor never take title to the assets. This is what allows the grantor to avoid the estate taxes that would apply if the assets were transferred to his or her children first.
Generation-skipping trusts can still be used to provide some financial benefits to a grantor's children, however, because any income generated by the trust's assets can be made accessible to the grantor's children while still leaving the assets in trust for his or her grandchildren.

Tiger Woods won't pay in the first event of the FedEx Cup, but Doug Ferguson writes that Woods will still be a threat to win the event.
ON THE FRINGE By By Doug Ferguson HARRISON, N.Y. - Tiger Woods has played four straight weeks on the PGA Tour only five times in his career, and two of those stretches came in 1996 when he was a 20-year-old rookie trying to avoid going to Q-school. So his absence from the first of four playoff events in the FedEx Cup should have come as no surprise. Nor should it be a problem. Once the inaugural “PGA Tour Playoffs” head toward a conclusion, no one will remember that Woods skipped The Barclays. Even if he doesn’t win the FedEx Cup, odds are he’ll be in the running. And that beats any interest golf used to have in the fall, which was next to nil. Truth is, Woods might have done the tour a favor.

Microsoft's Patent Prevents You From Skipping Ads With DRM
Fantastic. Not only are people trying to stop you from skipping ads on your DVR, Microsoft's patent will stop you from skipping ads on video you watch on your computer. The technique uses DRM to prevent any sort of playback until you watched the appropriate number of ads, and would essentially allow content providers like NBC or other networks to place their shows online and make sure they get their ad time's worth. Although we're in favor of any method that would get more people to put shows online, the fact of the matter is we're used to skipping over commercials via our DVRs anyway. To BitTorrent we go. I think the Republicans know more about the average American voter than you think. It went onto the street in America to find out how much the average American on the street knows about 9/11 and its consequences. This is scary in the extreme and clearly displays just how effective the misinformation and propoganda is beating the truth hands down.

Pollsters have a plan for Nevada: Skip it
Most say we’re too green at caucusing, too transient
By Brian Eckhouse Michael Mishak Fri, Jan 11, 2008 (2 a.m.) National public opinion pollsters, fresh off a glaring failure to pick the winner in New Hampshire’s presidential primary, are now violently queasy about trying to predict a winner in Nevada. In fact, for a variety of reasons, major news organizations are taking a pass on polling before Nevada’s Jan. 19 caucus. The concerns stem from the New Hampshire mistake and from knowledge that Nevada has a large transient population not familiar with the workings of a big-time caucus. By comparison, New Hampshire is a state with a long history of political participation, a stable population and a history of respected surveys that have accurately gauged the preferences of the electorate. Nevertheless, the polls had

“You've seen it here, in furniture. You've seen the textile industry, where Washington watched, saw the jobs go and go," he said in Bluffton to a group of retirees. "I'm not willing to declare defeat on any industry where we can be competitive. I'm going to fight for every job," Romney said.
But his hopeful economic message may resonate less than it did in struggling Michigan, whose 7.4 percent unemployment rate is far above the 5.0 percent national average and the 5.9 percent South Carolina rate.
The opt-out strategy, as practiced by all the candidates, sounds a bit like a Zen koan: If the candidate expects a loss, does it still hurt his campaign?

Email Print Text size November 12, 07 11:10 AM By Michael Paulson, Globe Staff
BALTIMORE Pope Benedict XVI will visit New York and Washington, D.C., in the spring, but will not come to Boston, the Vatican's top diplomat in the United States announced this morning.
In his first visit to the United States as pope, Benedict will speak at the United Nations, visit the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in Manhattan, and meet at the White House with President Bush. He will also celebrate Mass at Yankee Stadium in New York and at the new Nationals baseball stadium, which is now under construction in Washington.
The decision is a blow to Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley, who had pushed hard for Benedict to visit Boston, which will be celebrating its bicentennial as a Catholic diocese next year. But Boston was a controversial option because of its prominence as the city in which the clergy sexual abuse crisis erupted.
The details of the trip were announced by the papal nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Pietro Sambi, at the start of the semiannual meeting of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore this morning.
