http://www.inlander.com Reviews "This witty book lacks violence, sex, bad language, or even real villains, but it raises a lot of issues involving religion, tolerance, and censorship in amusing and thoughtful ways, a charming treatment of a serious topic with substance enough for kids and adults."
Locus Magazine
, December 2005 "Crutcher takes the fad in authorial intrusion one better, inserting himself as a character in this metafictional novel with a ... highly entertaining plot."
STARRED REVIEW, Publishers Weekly (June 6, 2005)
STARRED REVIEW, School Library Journal “This oft-censored author entertains, inspires, invites intellectual inquiry and concedes well-meaning motives to both sides . . . a lot to pack into a novel, but when did Crutcher ever pack light?”
STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus "... themes of senseless tragedy and intellectual freedom serve as a natural postscript to [Crutcher's] memoir, but this isn't nonfiction. In fact, it defies categorization, offering up a smorgasbord of literaty devices ... elective mutism, a narrator from beyond the grave, and a plot in which the author himself plays a major role."

State parks have great hills for sledding, not shredding
By BARRY TRUMAN SPECIAL TO THE P-I LAKE WENATCHEE On the smooth, groomed slope of Lake Wenatchee State Park's sliding hill, where tubes are challenged by plastic sleds and foam gliders, Sakura and Akina Phan coast by, sharing a sled and a total of six years life experience. A gentle crash into the track's edge puts Akina, 2, in tears, but Sakura, 4, quickly buries the memory in planning the next run. MERYL SCHENKER / P-I Nicholas Williams, 5, of Seattle takes a run at the sno-park in Lake Wenatchee State Park. In near hero-worship, they size up 12-year-old Sam Sturgeon, spinning by on his plastic disc in a style he calls "the spiral." Lake Wenatchee's sled culture is low pressure, informal and friendly, with no snobby dress code like skiing. Thrift-store clothes stand proudly next to North Face duds. At 1,866 feet of elevation, the snow won't be slush in an hour and your kids won't be dodging rocks, ditches, fences, parked Suburbans or spinning Civics.

Wolfsong has provided premiere dog sled touring experiences since 1997. Thanks to Lake Superior, Wolfsong always has snow December thru March, even when the rest of the Midwest is bare. Arctic blasts are also tempered here by the Lake and we rarely get much below zero. Current Report: Thanks to everyone for a record season! We had so many families, couples and individuals this year who went home with some great memories. We are now closed for the season and will take reservations starting in September for next year. We open December 26 and run through the third week in March every year. Our snowfall this year was below average, but still over 100", so we always have snow, even when there is green grass down south.

Dog Sledding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan What is it like to dog sled? Join the mushers of the Upper Peninsula for a dogsledding adventure. You are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan As you stand on the runners of the dog sled, looking in amazement at the very excited dogs that are about to pull you down the trail, you begin to wonder..Just what have I gotten myself into? These dogs are psyched-and based on how the sled is bouncing around-strong, too. You get a little comfort knowing you will not be alone on the trail. Your guide will be ahead with his own team. Suddenly, your guide turns around and gives what you think is the thumbs-up signal with his fur-mittened hand, and like a shot he is gone. Your dogs are screaming to join their kennel mates on the trail. You lift your foot off the brake, and without warning, you can't believe how fast you are going down this narrow chute through the trees. The loud barking and excitement at the hook up are behind you. The dogs don't make a sound while they are running. Trees are flashing past you in a blur, seemingly close enough to reach out and tear off your parka. You vaguely remember something the guide said about trying not to hit the trees. You've made it the first half-mile and turn onto a straight, wide trail. Even though the dogs are still running quickly you remember that you are supposed to breathe, and begin to relax a little. Further down the trail the dogs slow to a nice trot and things seem to be under control.

I stand on the sidelines and watch in simple awe the unhesitating charge through a long turn of a team that wants to run, being driven by someone who knows that desire in them and cares for it, who communicates empathy and respect. What dogs give in these circumstances is enough to humble a human being for the memory of any niggardliness in his life. A person would have to be a fool to abuse such heart. Any one would have to be callous, nearly finished as a human being not to want to raise his arms in salute as such animals roared past, a fury of hot breathing gone like a shot down the trail." By Alexandre Da Silva Associated Press As a boy growing up in a poor family on the Big Island, Tom "Pohaku" Stone found entertainment barreling down grassy slopes aboard ti leafs and banana stumps. But for Stone, what began as childhood fun on a natural roller coaster ride has evolved into an academic and cultural journey aimed at reviving the 2,000-year Hawaiian tradition of he'e holua, or Hawaiian lava sledding. He has the scars to show for it. Wearing just a tank top and shorts and reaching speeds of up to 70 mph on a sled standing only four inches above ground, Stone once ran into a steel post sticking up from the grass during a demonstration in a slope on Maui, tearing an 18-inch gash in his left thigh. In another crash, Stone broke his neck. It hasn't stopped him. "You can't even imagine what it's like to be head first, four inches off the ground, doing 30, 40, 50 miles an hour on rock," Stone said. "It looks like you are riding just fluid lava. It's death-defying ... but it's a lot of fun."
