Snowshoe Magazine's Guide to Snowshoeing:
Knowing What to Buy, Where to Go, How to Get Started and Learn What's Important There ain't no better way to begin snowshoeing than just going and doing it. Take a risk, rent or buy a pair of snowshoes, dress for the elements and enjoy. However, that's just a start - there is more to it than just taking a refreshing plunge in some snow.
Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years. And, obviously, the art of snowshoeing has become more sophisticated over time - now it's considered a winter sport. From the early wood-frame to the aluminum-frame models, snowshoeing has garnered quite a following throughout the world. Modern day snowshoeing is made up of casual snowshoers who hike trails for pleasure, the snowshoeing enthusiasts who trek through the backcountry, and the competitors who race.
Considering this is the fastest growing winter sport in the world (snowboarding is growing fast too, but not fast enough), snowshoeing is poised to become a monster of a market. Many involved in skiing and snowboarding utilize snowshoes to participate in some great backcountry hikes to find the holy grail of mother nature: Deep, unscathed powder. Snowshoeing is a great alternative for many sports - especially those who like running.

WINTER HIKING
There's probably a few good reasons to hang up the hiking boots during the WinterI just can't think of one ! Many of the trails that we travel in Spring, Summer, and Fall are also available during the Winter. Many public parks, cities, and towns maintain trail systems which remain accessible for Winter hiking and even snowshoeing. Some have special rules that apply to Winter use so check with them for specifics. If nothing else, it's a great way to keep those hiking muscles active. Many lowland backcountry trails are also available year-round, albeit muddy. Trails in the mountains, (although buried in deep snow) are also traversable (with the help of some special gear). With some additional education, training, and gear, there's no reason we can't be just as actively hiking in the Winter as in the other three seasons. Check it out ! Find out what's available in your area. You might be surprised at the possibilities. For the higher elevations, why not try snowshoeing ?

Carl Heilman has been involved in the sport of snowshoeing ever since making his first pair of snowshoes in the early 1970's. He has written numerous articles on the subject and has also published a booklet on making snowshoes (unnavailable until fall 2004). He's been leading beginner's and advanced snowshoeing workshops for the Adirondack Mtn. Club and the Appalachian Mtn. Club since the mid 1980's and has also done programs and workshops for many other organizations and schools throughout the northeast. He has also led snowshoe clinics for the major outdoor industry trade show held each winter in Salt Lake City. Carl handcrafted his 'high-tech' traditional snowshoes until 1997, and has also done some snowshoe design consulting work with major manufacturers. His snowshoes have been used all over the world, and some of his ideas for snowshoe design have been incorporated into commercial designs. While he enjoys passing along his expertise on snowshoeing and winter travel, he especially enjoys seeing folks turn-on to the sport after using snowshoes for the first time!
The following pages are a result of his trying to help demystify the sport of snowshoeing and choosing snowshoes. Each facet of snowshoes and snowshoeing has been broken down into it's simplest components. Hopefully this will help provide a better understanding of snowshoes so folks can more easily choose snowshoes that are best suited for them, and help them take those first steps in the snow with confidence! The most important part of a snowshoe is the binding. A good one can give you a great outdoor experience. Crescent Moon's "single pull loop" (SPL) binding is considered to be the best designed harness system available anywhere in the world. The SPL snowshoe binding design is featured on both the Gold and Silver series of snowshoes. NEW FOR 2008, MAGNESIUM 9 The Gold series features a molded polyurethane stirrup that captures your foot with a single pull of the loop strap. To close the binding, a polycarbonate buckle ratchets your heel snugly into place for a secure and comfortable fit. The Silver series is designed with an ultra durable fabric version of the SPL binding and uses a cam locking buckle in the place of the ratcheting heel mechanism. Both are the best you will ever find. Put your foot into a better place. Your head is sure to follow.

Twenty years ago, an interest in fitness and the development of lightweight aluminum snowshoes brought snowshoeing out of the backwoods and into the mainstream. Snowboarders, who were often banned from ski areas, would tote their snowboards on their backs and use their snowshoes to break trail to where the snow ran deep. Soon, snowshoes became a requisite part of the winter sports arsenal. Ski areas blazed trails and led snowshoe tours in order to provide another way for people to have winter fun. Competitors line up for the Pittsfield Snowshoe Race. (click to enlarge) You can read more about this new breed of snowshoer in the current issue of Vermont Life . (See A Heck of a Trek .) SNOWSHOEING

Snowshoeing is enjoying increasing popularity in snowy areas, mainly because it is so easy to learn and lots of fun. There are many fine ski areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin that welcome snowshoers. Most of the ski resorts listed on this page offer equipment rentals on-site, so you can try out the latest high-tech snowshoes and get a sense of the sport in a single sunny day.
If your are interested in learning more about snowshoeing, read on, or just click to the snowshoe entries for snowshoeing options in Lake Tahoe.
A Brief History of Snowshoeing From Europe to North America to Asia, people began using snowshoes over 3,000 years ago out of a basic need to find food and explore new territories in the wintertime.
Snowshoers looked to the naturally efficient design of animal paws and began modeling their snowshoes after animal prints they found in nature. Some early styles like the beavertail and bearpaw are still in use today.
Some of the earliest snowshoes were over seven feet long which, though unwieldy, were helpful in navigating through very deep powdery snow.
