Areas of specialized knowledge
Colorado-based Claire Walter has long covered skiing (Alpine and Nordic), snowshoeing, hiking, backpacking and scuba diving. She is not only an award- winning writer, but she is a recognized authority on these subjects. More recently, she has written about cuisine, particularly Western regional foods. Other topics include culture, tourism and environmental issues, with particular focus on the Rockies and other mountain regions. In addition, she is a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier and holds an advanced dive card from PADI. And she has now restored her second Victorian home, the first an 1870s brownstone in Hoboken, NJ, and the second a "newer" 1890s prairie Victorian in Boulder, CO.
Claire has skied Colorado's mountains, hiked and snowshoed its trails, rafted its rivers, attended performances in its theaters and concert halls, dined in its fine restaurants, attended its renowned food and cultural festivals, explored its museums – and has written about it all. Her knowledge extends along the spine of the Continental Divide to other Rocky Mountain states and also to Canada.

For some mountain enthusiasts, snowshoes are a critical tool to get to the base of a climb or the top of a slope prior to snowboarding down. For others snowshoeing is an end in itself - providing exercise and enjoyment of the winter wonderland. For those without the inclination for skiing, snowshoes offer an easy, gratifying way to access the snowy backcountry. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Snowshoes have been used in North America for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, and this evolution has provided the present-day user with a wide range of styles to choose from. Some people prefer styles and materials as near as practicable to traditional models. Others prefer the generally lower maintenance and the latitude for experimentation and innovation permitted by high-tech materials and manufacturing processes. MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION Traditional - Traditional snowshoes are made with largely organic materials wood and varnished rawhide lacing (babiche). Rawhide is laced onto the wooden frame while wet and shrinks as it dries, providing a very stiff and light deck. Both the frame and the rawhide must be varnished regularly as rawhide can absorb four times its weight in water in wet conditions, causing the shoes to lose tension and gain weight. Wooden snowshoes intended for wet conditions are sometimes made with one-piece decks of neoprene or polyethylene, both of which are virtually maintenance-free.

Choose the right snowshoe for the conditions: More on float: Don't expect to find the old webbing and wood snowshoes of yesteryear: Today's models have gone high-tech, with components made of plastic, rubber, and aluminum. Shoes: Used to be there were only two choices: Shoe-paks (like those felt-lined Maine-style hunting boots) and backpacking boots. But wouldn't you know it, snowshoeing has undergone a recent renaissance, and the manufacturers, bless their inventive little hearts, have followed suit. So now, snowshoers, too, can sprinkle their conversation with words like polypropylene, Gore-Tex, and Thinsulate. And before you go sniffing that, "The Indians used snowshoes for centuries before Gore-Tex," consider the advantages of having support, insulation, and waterproofing all in the same boot. Plus, they can be used without snowshoes for regular winter walking. Gaiters keep snow out of your boots: A big advantage.
