The beauty of snowshoeing is that it's easy to learn. A trip on snowshoes may be as easy as a casual walk around the yard or as difficult as a winter mountain hike. No special skills and only warm winter clothing is required. One of the finest aspects of snowshoeing is its simplicity. The great thing about snowshoeing is you can snowshoe the same trails you hike in the summer. The banks of streams and rivers are always interesting with their open views and potential for seeing wildlife. Start with shorter hikes and work your way up to longer hikes to the peaks. Be sure to check our snow report for trails particularly suited to snowshoeing. Snowshoes: Compare Prices
My first chance to try snowshoeing came as an outing from my gym. We formed up carpools and stopped at a ski shop to rent snowshoes, at a cost of $9 per day including ski poles. Poles are optional in showshoeing just as they are optional in hiking. They can be nice to help you maintain balance, but are not necessary. Gaiters and layered clothing are highly recommended. The snowshoes went on easily with 3 straps. You can use them with any shoes or boots. I wore them with my waterproof New Balance 962 walking shoes. Once on, it was easy to move about simply by walking. Only a few times did I manage to step one showshoe onto the other and trip myself. The showshoes grip the snow with crampons at toe and heel. This is what allows you to simply walk along without slipping and without using any fancy technique. Going uphill and downhill use the same maneuvers as when walking except on extreme slopes where you may want to kick steps into the snow. It is important to plant the snowshoe flat on the surface to get a grip with the crampons.

Snowshoeing? Fun? Maybe you're one of those people who still think of snowshoeing as an arduous drudge in giant, clunky contraptions. Which is to say you haven't tried snowshoeing recently. It's one of the fastest growing winter sports, and snowshoe technology has made giant strides (if you'll pardon the pun) in recent years. Plus, it has at least two great advantages: 1) You don't need to sacrifice your life savings to buy equipment; and 2) It's easy. If you're a snowshoeing neophyte, there's no need to bite your nails. Snowshoeing is probably one of the few challenging sports in the world that don't have a steep learning curve. Basically, if you can put one foot in front of the other, you're well on your way to having some fun with snowshoes.

Cross Country Skiing in Northwest Wisconsin
Northwest Wisconsin is a region rich in Nordic skiing tradition and history and blessed with some of the best cross country ski trails in the country. Not only are there literally hundreds of kilometers of groomed trails, but they represent a wide range of family-oriented to athletically challenging experiences in a setting of incredible natural beauty. With the region’s strong Scandinavian heritage, it was only natural that Nordic skiing took root in northwest Wisconsin. Farmers, loggers and settlers of Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish extraction used cross country skis for work and recreation dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. Much of the area’s "modern" Nordic skiing heritage can be attributed to the late Tony Wise and the development of Telemark Resort in Cable. Wise was one of those larger than life characters whose accomplishments helped elevate cross country skiing to a much higher level of awareness in the Midwest and perhaps the country. He was the former owner of Telemark Resort which became one of the first downhill ski areas in the Midwest in 1947. As such, it quickly became a hot spot for winter sports in the area. Wise recognized the potential for cross country skiing at Telemark; a system of trails was laid out and Telemark began to make its mark in the world of cross country skiing. Introduction
Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy Alaska in the winter. All too often the snow gets too deep to allow travel into the skirts of Anchorage, let alone the wilderness.

Never been out snowshoeing? It's easy - if you can walk, you can snowshoe. If you've never been, you may wish to consider renting a pair of shoes before purchasing; this can help with a few potential problems: 1 - You get a chance to determine if this is something you will enjoy 2 - You get a chance to try out some rather pricey gear before you pay (various bindings, platforms, etc.) Many folks start with inexpensive shoes and upgrade when they wear them out. This is a good way to give it a good effort before you spend a couple hundred dollars on a quality shoe. Yes, you can spend quite a bit on a pair of shoes, but, you will quickly learn that there are bindings you like, and bindings you don't like. If you go with the modern shoes, most of these bindings have modern securing mechanisms that will release fairly easily, even if covered in snow and ice. However, you may find a set that you have to 'tie' into, which means these can be very difficult to remove at the end of the day.
