a near silent step or two into the serenity of the brisk winter's day in the Boundary Waters. Sun glistens up from the perfect blanket of snow meandering across the lake... yet to be visited by man or creature. No roar of traffic, ...no boom boom of the broken speakers.... just you and God's creation, with the only sound perhaps beings your relaxed breath, or the occasional fflopff from the snow falling from the burdened branch. Some say snowshoeing is the fastest growing winter activity in North America, and for many is a family event. What better place to enjoy, than in the million-plus acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area? Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot doesn't sink completely into the snow, a quality called "flotation". Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings. Some modern snowshoes are similar, but most are made of light metal while others are a single piece of plastic attached to the foot to spread the weight. In addition to distributing the weight, snowshoes are generally raised at the toe for maneuverability. They must not accumulate snow, hence the latticework , and require bindings to attach them to the feet. While today they are mainly used for recreational purposes, primarily by hikers and runners who like to continue their hobby in wintertime, in the past they were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life or living depended on the ability to get around in areas of deep and frequent snowfall. Even today, snowshoes are necessary equipment for

Snowshoe Buying Guide
Print this guide
Loved your weekend snowshoe rentals so much you almost "forgot" to return them? Or perhaps you're a veteran trailblazer who's ready for an upgrade. Unlike many other snowsports, snowshoeing can be easily learned by anyone. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. If you're in the market for a new pair of snowshoes, Sierra Trading Post has the best deals on every type of snowshoe, from beginner models for the whole family to technical models for the serious racer. Snowshoes by design are pretty uncomplicated and easy to purchase... just know your weight (including the gear you will carry), your purpose for snowshoeing and the type of terrain/ snow you'll encounter... and you're ready to start shopping.
Snowshoe Sizing
Although it's okay to fudge your weight on your driver's license, it's important to be accurate when sizing yourself for snowshoes. The more you weigh, the more surface area you need for optimal flotation in the snow. With the proper size, you'll still sink into fresh powder, but not nearly as deep as you would in boots alone. Snowshoes typically come in a variety of lengths between about 20" to 36". The width is designed to be proportional to the length, so a lighter hiker's snowshoe will be narrower to match their narrower gate. All snowshoes sold by Sierra Trading Post list the weight capacity specific to each snowshoe to help you determine which size is best. (See the chart below to help you determine your ideal size.)

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Hello Snowshoers! This winter I continue to do "something for the first time"....working for someone else for the winter season. It just happens to be the REI Outdoor School as one of their snowshoe instructors! Because of their full schedule again this season my own business is slightly curtailed. I am doing private group tours composed of 8+ people and have added 2 Full Moon tour dates as well as a few "Women's Wednesdays" and "50's Plus Wednesdays". You might want to go to the REI.com website to see if any of the Outdoor School dates fit your schedule. Here's how you do it: www.REI.com Get Out There, REI Outdoor School , Sacramento , Snowshoeing....and pick a date. The classes fill fast so I suggest you go there right away if none of my dates fit your schedule. There is NO ON-LINE registration yet , so you need to contact or visit the store listed on the date you want to go. Pre-registration is a must. It is a great program. You meet at one of the 3 Sac area stores; Sacramento , Roseville , or Folsom. We drive you up and back in a van, AND we supply snowshoes, poles, and gaiters. Of course I am one of the instructors on every trip from the Roseville or Sacramento store this season. All the instructors are highly qualified, energetic folk who are great to be with. Also, if you want to drive yourself up to meet us at the venue that works too. Don't forget, you MUST pre-register. I hope to see you out there on the snow!
