On March 10-11, nearly 1,000 athletes from all over Massachusetts gathered to compete in the 2007 Special Olympics Winter Games. Athletes competed in a number of events, including Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic Skiing, Floor Hockey, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Ten Pin Bowling, and Basketball.
Our very own Ivy Street Hawks ventured west to Worcester to compete in the basketball tournament, capturing the bronze medal before the weekend was over. The competition was fierce, with the battle for second place determined by a tie-break! The Hawks finished just behind the Cambridge Warriors and the Belmont Blue Devils with a record of 3-1-1 for the tournament.
Congratulations to all of our athletes and a big thank you to all of the staff who helped make the weekend a success.

Special Olympics Teaches Value to NAAAP
It's the small things in life that really matter. Yet it is the small things that we seem to take for granted in everyday life. Nowhere was this more clear to me than at this year's Special Olympics
I was there with the other members of NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals ). We were supposedly volunteering, but really we were all learning these important small things. Learning that no matter which one of the athletes came out of the water first, they really were all winners.
But really everyone there was a winner that day. The athletes got to show their stuff, us volunteers were able to feel the pride that comes with helping others; and the families were able to have fun watching the competition.
Sure us NAAAP members only did the little things that day. Some were rushing by in a frenzy setting up all the water and ice for the contestants. Others were running around unloading trucks and handing out Oreos. Maybe NAAAP isn't saving the world, but isn't it the little things in life that make the biggest difference?

Special Olympics Alberta Winter Games Opening Ceremonies
Calgary
February 23, 2007 Check Against Delivery Thank you and good evening everyone. I'm honoured to be part of these opening ceremonies because I have great respect for the Special Olympics program. I respect the program… and its incredible athletes… because of the spirit that lies at the heart of the Special Olympics. That spirit is simply having the courage to try. It's a lot tougher than it sounds. But Special Olympians take on the world everyday with the courage to try new things. They set high goals and go after them without hesitation… They challenge expectations and redefine what's possible. That doesn't just make them Special Olympians. It also makes them true Albertans. Every athlete here has worked hard and shown the determination it takes to earn a place at the 2007 Alberta Winter Games. And I know that determination will continue to show throughout this competition.

The College of Dental Medicine first launched its Special Smiles Dental Health Program at the South Carolina Special Olympics in 2001.The games bring together athletes with mental retardation from all over the state. The coordinator of the Special Smiles Dental Health Program is Dr. Carlos Salinas. Through the Special Olympics, Dr. Salinas recognized an opportunity to increase awareness for dental health issues in persons with mental retardation, their families and their coaches. This program also provides a rewarding experience for the dentists, dental students, dental hygienists and volunteers, and it's a learning experience for both patient and professional. The Special Smiles Program consists of giving oral dental health screenings to provide the athlete with a report card of oral health status. The project now numbers more than 100 sites in the United States and abroad.
