(Redirected from Tae Kwon Do Jump to: navigation search Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and combat sport. Taekwondo is the national sport of South Korea and sparring, kyeorugi, is an Olympic sporting event. In Korean hanja, tae (跆) means to destroy with the feet; kwon (拳) means "fist"; and do (道) means "path" or "way". Hence, taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the martial art. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, and philosophy. Although there are great doctrinal and technical differences among taekwondo organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. In sparring, turning, front, reverse turning, and side kicks are often used, as well as the backfist and reverse punch; advanced kicks include jumping, spinning, sliding, and skipping kicks, often in combination. Taekwondo training generally includes a system of blocks, punches, and open-handed strikes and may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks. Although there are strong similarities in stances through out Taekwondo schools, individual instructors often have their own preferred style. For example, in the Charyot stance, feet are often at 45 degrees, keeping eyes forward while bowing. However, many instructors prefer the feet parallel forward, with the eyes facing toward the floor while bowing (as a sign of respect and trust for those around them). M will be testing for her orange belt this afternoon. She is very nervous about this one. I don't know if she has practiced as much for this one. She hates to practice her form. Oh well - we shall see how it goes this afternoon. Posted by Cate at 11:04 AM Comments (2)

    Vanderbilt Tae Kwon Do
    Purpose
Since its formation in June 1970, the club has maintained the honor and integrity of the style of Tae Kwon Do which its founder brought over from Korea. Mr. T.W. Haw, at the time a 6th dan, currently an 8th, was a student at Vanderbilt, fresh from serving and teaching this 1400 year-old martial art to American G.I.'s in Vietnam. He introduced Nashville to Tae Kwon Do in its most traditional form: hard kicks and punches practiced repetitively, day after day, in a formal, very respectful and very old-style format. Today this same art is taught in much the same way as one of his early students (February 1972), Dr. Irv Rubenstein (also a Vandy B.A. and Ph.D. grad), learned it. With an emphasis on proper form, high kicking, hard-contact (without the padding modern stylists have come to depend on) sparring, Dr. Rubenstein, 5th dan, has provided the consistency of style, teaching and programming no other club sport can match.
    Practice
Tae Kwon Do normally meets about three times a week for a little over an hour. With no fees to join, just bring your courage, your inner strength and your body. We'll take care of the rest.

      Description
Fortunately, the history of Taekwondo is more easily traced than many other forms of martial arts. Since it is a newer and more recent martial art, the origins are fairly well documented and allow for thorough study of its origins and history. Taekwondo is primarily a Korean martial art, having been created during the early years after the end of the Korean War. Before this modern inception of Taekwondo, however, early forms of martial arts similar to Taekwondo and having served as the basis of Taekwondo were running rampant.
If one is looking that far back (to the earliest ancestors to Taekwondo), it is there that the history does, in fact, get a little murky. Taekwondo is such a universal art and it has “borrowed” techniques from many other martial arts during the years (and centuries) that the “parent” art of Taekwondo is not well known at all. Taekwondo is better thought of as a culmination of many Korean, Japanese and Chinese influences (however, the influences are mainly Korean) to form one very well-rounded and well thought out martial arts curriculum.
One of the reasons that Taekwondo’s parent arts are obscure is that many of them were banned during the years in which Japan had control over the majority of Korea (between 1910 and 1945). For example, the strictly traditional Korean martial arts such as Subak and Taekkyon were prohibited from being practiced or taught in Japan’s effort to force Korea to assimilate to Japanese culture (Koreans were also forced to disregard their own language and take on Japanese names in place of their own). Subak and mainly Taekkyon were still practiced and taught in secret, however, many moves and techniques may have been changed to alter the style enough so that the Koreans would not get caught.
