Basically, the Koreans always practised martial arts. They can be seen kicking the bejaysis out of each other in murals dating from 2000 years ago. However, the country's subsequent history is fraught with a series of wars and alliances with the Mongols, the Manchurians, the Chinese and the Japanese. All this activity resulted in Korean fighters absorbing techniques from a plethora of the foreign martial arts that they were exposed to. "Ouch! There goes my leg. But wasn't that a damn fine flying kick - I wonder if I can incorporate that into my repertoire?" In the 14th century, King Taejo began the rule of the Yi dynasty in Korea. The king replaced the national religion of Buddhism with Confucianism, which advised the higher classes to concentrate on poetry and music rather than smacking each other soggy. However, the workers still kept up martial arts practice, even though state-sponsored training went into a decline.

Tae Kwon-Do
Taekwon-Do is, despite what most people think, a relatively new martial art. Developed over a lifetime and unveiled to the world by General Choi Hong-Hi on the 11th April 1955.
Korean in origin Taekwon-Do is famous for it's spectacular high kicks and it's code of ethics. Taekwon-Do aims not only to develop the student physically, but mentally too, creating an all round better person. To achieve such an effect General Choi Hong-Hi included in his art the 5 tenets - Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomnitable Spirit. By making these five elements a regular part of one's personality, General Choi believed a person could become a better member of society.
Today, original Taekwon-Do has spanwned, as do many original things, many imitators. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this is definately not so with Taekwon-Do. As groups stray from the original path of Taekwon-Do their techniques and claims upon tradition become questionable. This is why it is important to maintain the high standards laid down by General Choi Hong-Hi and the International Taekwon-Do Federation.
Through the continued practice of Taekwon-Do a student can expect to achieve many physical benefits. Strenght - repetative excercises using the arms and legs greatly incease the strenght of the limbs and in turn their tone. Endurance - all of the elements of Taekwon-Do help build up a stronger body and the more you do it, the easier it gets. Flexibility - as Taekwon-Do features many high kicks, flexibility is important. This is not something that everyone has naturally, it comes through long hours of hard work. Improved flexibility will lead to less injuries and better technique. Weight loss- constant kicking and punching is a great cardio workout. You will find your weight dropping, couple this with the other benefits and Taekwon-Do will seem a much better option than sweating over machines in an over priced gym.

The name comes from the Korean words tae (foot, or kick), kwon (fist, or punch), and do (art, or way of life) and literally means “the art of hand and foot fighting.” Students learn the fundamentals of tae kwon do through choreographed sequences of combative moves, the breaking of boards or other materials, and two-person controlled sparring. They also receive instruction in principles such as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, and self-control. Practitioners wear a white, loose-fitting uniform known as a dobok, tied at the waist with a colored belt that indicates rank. The ranking system is divided into ten kup (pupil) levels and nine dan (black belt, or expert) levels. At competitions, participants are judged by how well they perform the choreographed sequences, by their accuracy in breaking boards, and by their skill in sparring contests.

      growing pain
Everyone goes through 'em, my brother said he hard particularly bad ones. Physically speaking, I've had horrible growing pains ever since about 7th grade. Knees, ankles, elbows, you name it. I got used to them, I guess, and only the comforting idea that I might yet grow taller makes them tolerable enough. Being out of main physical action for about 3 days, going back to tkd today was a slight wake-up call. My knees hurt particularly badly, and my ankles were kind of sore but I've been there and done all that. There was more, though, because I am used to my curse. Recently, I've realized that I have been growing up. The kids look up to me with respect, and go to me for help. My authority and command has grown, but I don't think it's the kids that are different. I've been lead teaching (some kind of promotion which is bs because I do a harder job and get paid the same rate) at my job for about 6 weeks, and lately I realized that the kids are starting to listen to me. It's not 'cause I've been teaching the same kids either, we switched after 3 weeks. I just feel a difference starting to take place, that I'm changing on the inside instead of the outside. I'm not so hotheaded anymore, I've learned to take a step back and let other people win for a change because winning all the time and being right just doesn't matter as much as everyone being happy. I've learned (especially from TIC) that I don't have to be right or voice my opinion violently in order to be happy, that there is a sentimental value in letting others be right.
