Tai Chi Introduction
The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Force'. The notion of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, the notion that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) in all things. 'Force' (or, more literally, 'fist') can be thought of here as the means or way of achieving this ying-yang, or 'supreme-ultimate' discipline. Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. For many practitioners the focus in doing them is not, first and foremost, martial, but as a meditative exercise for the body. For others the combat aspects of Tai Chi are of considerable interest. In Chinese philosophy and medicine there exists the concept of 'chi', a vital force that animates the body. One of the avowed aims of Tai Chi is to foster the circulation of this 'chi' within the body, the belief being that by doing so the health and vitality of the person are enhanced. This 'chi' circulates in patterns that are close related to the nervous and vascular system and thus the notion is closely connected with that of the practice of acupuncture and other oriental healing arts.

What Is T'ai Chi?
When you think about martial arts, karate and judo may come to mind. T'ai chi, sometimes called t'ai chi chuan, is also an ancient Chinese martial art form that was developed to enhance both physical and emotional well-being. It's been said that t'ai chi is a combination of moving yoga and meditation. A person performs t'ai chi by practicing breathing exercises and a series of slow, graceful, flowing postures (also called poses) simultaneously. The postures consist of movements that are said to improve body awareness and enhance strength and coordination. Many people who practice t'ai chi say that they feel more peaceful and relaxed after a workout. T'ai chi was developed in ancient China as early as 225 AD. The ancient Chinese believed that the body was filled with energy, or

Contact Chen Style Tai Chi Taijiquan or T'ai Chi Chuan (often abbreviated to Tai Chi) as we recognise it today is considered by many to have originated with Chen Wangting who lived in Chen village in the Henan Province of China in the 17th Century. Over the centuries many other forms of Tai Chi have originated from the Chen system, most of which are now better known than Chen style. The original Chen style has been passed down through generations of the Chen family. In the present day Chen Xiao Wang carries on this tradition. Chen Style Taijiquan is characterised by its whole body movement, combination of slow and fast, soft and hard movements and by the occasional explosive release of power. Why Practice Tai Chi? Tai Chi originated as a martial art, and when practised properly it provides an excelent system of self defence. However, many practitioners today start and continue to study Tai Chi because of the health benefits it brings. Practising Tai Chi will improve posture, core strength, circulation, balance, co-ordination, suppleness and help keep us free of both physical and mental tension. Tai Chi works on revitalising and increasing the body's natural flow of energy to keep us fitter, more alert and to bolster our immune system.

Massage and Tai Chi Benefit ADHD
During and after five weeks of tai chi lessons, adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) showed less anxiety, daydreaming, inappropriate emotions and hyperactivity, according to a study by the Touch Research Institute (TRI). Date: 07/10/05
Source: Massagemagazine.com "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: benefits from Tai Chi" was conducted by Maria Hernandez-Reif, Ph.D., Tiffany Field, Ph.D., and Eric Thimas. ADHD, often treated by drugs such as Ritalin, is characterized by inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. A 1998 TRI study showed that massage was effective in increasing focus, improving mood, reducing fidgeting and lowering hyperactivity in adolescents with ADHD. This study examined whether tai chi, the Chinese martial art of slow-moving, meditative exercise, would have similar effects. Thirteen adolescents with an average age of 14-and-a-half years and a diagnosis of ADHD participated in the study. They were taught tai chi postures for 30 minutes, twice a week for five weeks. Sessions consisted of breathing exercises accompanied by slow raising and lowering of the arms, twisting and turning of the arms and legs, shifting body weight, rotating and changing direction.

It can also set the stage for a host of other symptoms including depression, fatigue and irritability. And while many sufferers resort to toxic and harmful medications such as Enbrel and Remicade to ease their pain, researchers at UCLA are in the midst of investigating the effects of a much more natural, less abrasive treatment known as tai chi, a Chinese martial art that combines relaxation and mild physical exercise that gets patients moving in a gentle way. Tai Chi Studies Recent research has indicated that tai chi can preserve range of motion in patients, which could reduce disability. Moreover, a 2003 UCLA study demonstrated that a modified form of tai chiknown as tai chi chihboosts the immune system's response to a common virus and prevents outbreaks of shingles, a skin condition that strikes the elderly.

Chen Style Taijiquan in London
with Kinthissa , pupil of Chen XiaoWang, 19th generation master
Introduction
There are many legends surrounding the origins of Taijiquan (see Historical Background below), but it is generally accepted that Chen Style Taijiquan is the oldest, originating in the 16th century in Chenjiagou (Chen Village) in the province of Henan, China. The original Chen style is composed of "silk twining" movements punctuated with explosive actions such as stamping and leaping, thus combining "softness" and "hardness" in an organic whole.
Chen Style fundamentals - the delicate precision that transforms untrained movement into power.
Kinthissa and Laura teach on Mondays at movingeast Beginners/new members welcome to join throughout the year. ZhanZhuang and Chansigong 19 Form, LaoJia and XinJia
